“Horizon Club, beautiful renovation, pity about the appalling service”
Reviewed 28 December 2010

The newly renovated Horizon Club floors at the Shangri-La looks great. But I am am sad to say this is the only positive thing I have to say. They need to renovate the service and staff attitude as well. I have never had such a rude and unwelcoming check in at a hotel in 25 years of staying in hotels in Asia. On arrival at the club floor reception made to sit at reception desk on 15 minutes while staff answered telephone calls and talked to each other in very loud voices before being attended to. Every other club floor I have ever checked in, I have been invited to sit down in the lounge and have been offered a refreshment while the check in formalities are taken care of. Unfortunately not at the Shangri- La Bangkok, the rudeness of the front desk supervisor was beyond belief. The one junior person on the desk that was trying to do the right thing was continually interrupted by her. Not a great example to set to your junior staff on how to treat guests.
One hour after arriving in our rooms, our bags had not been delivered to or rooms. I queried the front desk about where our bags were. Half an hour after that the bags finally arrived. No apology from bell boy for taking 1.5 hours to get our luggage to the rooms. Shrugged when I queried him abut late arrival of luggage
Tomorrow we are moving to the Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong where we stayed last week. The service there was fantastic and the staff were excellent. The Shangri-La could learn a few lessons from them in customer service excellence.

My fiancé and family stayed at this hotel for Christmas in the Krunthep wing. We had an absolutely wonderful stay. The staff is very attentive, though we did miss that they let us know when they do not understand instead of just nod and smile and not bring us the right thing. The English skills could be much improved. Apart from that I have little negative comment about this place.

We were greeted with flowers upon arrival. The rooms have wonderful views over the river, and are very quiet despite a heavy highway crossing a bridge next to the hotel.
Good standards in the rooms, comfortable large beds, nice looking furniture, free soft drinks from the mini-bar, and spaceous bathroom with seperate shower, bath tub, as well as bidet.

Linens are changed daily, unless you leave a card at your bed. I would have preferred to leave a card if I wanted my linens changed, as it is easy to forget and I don't need new sheets every night!

The hotel room doors have a very annoying doorbell. Click on the ''do not disturb'' button right inside to avoid the staff ringing it at various times during the day. They ring it before cleaning the room in the morning, as well as before making the bed ready for the evening, in addition to when they check the mini bar and so forth.

Compliments to the kitchen! There is free afternoon tea including sandwiches to eat. There is also a free Happy Hour including hors d'oeuvre of various kinds - which were are very delicious. You can easily stuff yourself on everything from typical Thai chicken, to European cheeses and chocolate mousse. Absolutely recommended!

Breakfast buffet was also very good, though we missed more whole grain breads and service was a little slow if you arrived later during the breakfast hours. The staff do not always pick up if you are in a hurry...

The pool is very nice, and has a comfortable temperature. A jacuzzi is also there, but I didn't try it.

Wonderful hotel with top standard. Great service, and a comfortable quiet place to kick back in a busy city.

We were very pleased with our choice of this hotel. It was very lovely and clean. We had a balcony room and we think it was well worth the upgrade. The staff was very professional and very friendly. The lobby areas was very nice and the pool was beautiful. The breakfast buffet was out of this world with so many choices. We took the transportation package from the airport to the hotel. Well worth the extra money. It was a 5 minute walk to the ferry or the skytrain.

We booked a guide ahead of time. We used Dang to tour the city. She works for Tour with Tong. (tourwithtong@yahoo.com). Tong is hard to get a hold of, but keep trying. Dang does a great job with the english language. She showed us everything we wanted to see in Bangkok. We did everything by public transportation-taxi, skytrain and ferry. She was very knowledgeable about the sights and also has a great personality and was on time all 3 days.

Had two nights here during three weeks in Thailand.
Very nice room, worth paying for river view.
Lobby etc, pool, and hotel in general very good.
We ate both nights at Italian restaurant. Excellent food, and the Italian born chef came to our table to ensure our satisfaction, a nice touch.
Hotel expensive for Thailand, but reasonable by western standards.
Cannot fault hotel, but does not quite have the wow factor we were looking for.

Stayed at Shangri La hotel for 2 weeks in one of their suites.
The stay there will be in our memory always.
Beautiful spacious luxury that was made even more impressive by the wonderful staff.
Cant remember their names, but one of the managers in particular, a tall lady with short hair was just beautiful, and did her best to make our stay perfect. Always had a great smile!
And one of the pool waiters went out of his way to make sure we had all we wanted!
The pool, gym, room service, breakfasts were all just absolutely awesome!
The location on the river was also lovely! Fantastic views from our balcony!
Department store and restaurants just outside the hotel. Train station and ferry just outside also!
On our departure we had a late flight out and it was no problem to let us have a late check out!
Love to stay at this hotel again soon! Thanks to all the wonderful staff at the Shangri La.

My husband and I started our 3 week trip through Asia at the Shangri-la in Bangkok. It underwent a huge renovation a few years ago and it shows! Very beautiful decor, great service and a yummy breakfast buffet (although not included in room price). The location is great-it's one block from the skytrain and the tourist ferry which takes you on a tour of the Chao Praya river, where many of the best wats (temples) and palaces are. Highly recommend and worth the price.
