“One of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in”
Reviewed 4 January 2011

The Shangri-La hotels have a reputation, and I was glad to see that the Shangri-La Bangkok exceeded my expectations. Friendly staff, amazing service and a beautiful room with a terrific view of the river.

I arrived early in the morning and used the wrong entrance (the hotel is huge since they just added a new wing), but I was still able to check-in there and was driven to the correct entrance afterwards.

I only stayed for one night before travelling on, but the Shangri-La offered me a good introduction to Bangkok. The hotel is located next to the river and is a perfect starting point to explore the most important temples in Bangkok. Due to the convenient location I was already done with this in the early afternoon and could spend the rest of the day relaxing by the pool being taken care of by the very attentive staff. I never recovered so fast from a long flight.

The King Sized bed in the room was huge and incredibly comfortable. Breakfast in bed was delivered on time and delicious.

Incredible experience and will defiantly stay at another Shangri-La hotel if I have the chance.

Stayed at the Krungthep Wing for 2 nights over the New Year. 3rd time staying there. We stayed at the Krungthep wing and my sister and family stayed at the Shangri-La Wing. Great service from the staff all around - doormen and concierge were especially helpful when we wanted to get to more local eating places. They helped to provide directions to the the taxi drivers, we wouldn't have been able to find our way there on our own! Rooms at Krungthep are larger than the Shangri-la wing but a little older given the recent renovation at the shangri-la wing eg. still a big boxy TV's versus flatscreen LCD TV's.

The rate fr the Krungthep Wing includes breakfast, free flow of soft drinks, afternoon tea, evening cocktails (in the lounge or in the room) are great. All you need in a hotel especially if you are spending most of your time in the hotel.

We have stayed at several other hotels in Bangkok when we are there for business but for our holidays, we'd return to the Shangri-La. Walking into the Krunthep Wing (which is quieter and serene compared to Shangri-la wing) makes you feel that you are indeed on holiday.

Our family of four stayed in a deluxe suite (room 1051) for 3 nights in the Krungthep wing of this beautiful hotel. Service was outstanding. Our room included 24hr butler service, buffet breakfast, afternoon tea, happy hour, accesss to the Krungthep only pool and complimentary poolside drinks. Our room looked over the Chao praya river and we could see up and down the river. We had an outstanding experience and would highly recommend the upgrade to the Krungthep wing.

The Krungthep Wing is not cutting edge - it's lobby is far less impressive than the adjacent Shangri-La wing - but it wins in comfort, service, and quality over style. The Krungthep Wing pool is shaded in the morning - go to the main pool instead. Spa is pricey, so try the Thann Sanctuary Spa in the upscale Gaysorn shopping mall near Siam Skytrain.

Me and my girlfriend stayed here in late August this year as we wanted to start our journey travelling around Thailand with a bit of class and sophistication and the Shangri-La sure helped us do just that!

The hotel is located just around the corner from a MRT station that makes getting around the city very easy and it is also not far from Patpong and its night market.

The hotel oozes class and beauty and the staff are simply superb, so helpful and welcoming. A great place for couples to stay and we both would go back in a heartbeat.

In December 2010, I started and ended a trip throughout Southeast Asia at the Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok. The service, amenities and facilities are exceptional at this hotel, particularly given the affordable price I paid for the room (about $150 USD, fully prepaid about 4 months in advance and non-refundable). Public spaces and rooms are beautifully appointed, with an Asian decor accented with western influences - you will feel like a million bucks staying at this hotel! I was impressed by how clean every inch of the hotel is and how wonderful it smells throughout. A few highlights: the pool deck overlooks the Chayo Praya river and bustling city life of Bangkok, making swimming a very cool experience; the breakfast buffet serves a never-ending spread of fresh delicacies and delights; the concierge's private tuk-tuk will drop you off at local lunch spots for free (try the Curry Queen); all public spaces, including the beautiful lobby lounge, overlook the Chayo Praya, and provide particularly beautiful views at night; the hotel itself is located within walking distance of the BTS Skytrain and river "boat buses" and is a short trip to many major Bangkok attractions including the Siam Paragon Mall, Jim Thomspon House, National Museum, Wat Phao, Wat Arun and the Emerald Buddha. If I return to Bangkok, I will surely stay at this hotel again!

The newly renovated Horizon Club floors at the Shangri-La looks great. But I am am sad to say this is the only positive thing I have to say. They need to renovate the service and staff attitude as well. I have never had such a rude and unwelcoming check in at a hotel in 25 years of staying in hotels in Asia. On arrival at the club floor reception made to sit at reception desk on 15 minutes while staff answered telephone calls and talked to each other in very loud voices before being attended to. Every other club floor I have ever checked in, I have been invited to sit down in the lounge and have been offered a refreshment while the check in formalities are taken care of. Unfortunately not at the Shangri- La Bangkok, the rudeness of the front desk supervisor was beyond belief. The one junior person on the desk that was trying to do the right thing was continually interrupted by her. Not a great example to set to your junior staff on how to treat guests.
One hour after arriving in our rooms, our bags had not been delivered to or rooms. I queried the front desk about where our bags were. Half an hour after that the bags finally arrived. No apology from bell boy for taking 1.5 hours to get our luggage to the rooms. Shrugged when I queried him abut late arrival of luggage
Tomorrow we are moving to the Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong where we stayed last week. The service there was fantastic and the staff were excellent. The Shangri-La could learn a few lessons from them in customer service excellence.
