“Great potential, needs management attention”
Reviewed 11 November 2012

We stayed at the Riva Surya this weekend after reading about it in the paper - a one night escape to celebrate our 10th anniversary (where did those years go?!). It was a nice stay, but not outstanding. Too many things just not quite right, but a lovely location, and much is right here - so, to summarize:

Pluses: Great riverside location. Close to KhaoSan Road, and all that action. Right on the river, right next to the express boat dock, with a lovely small pool where we drank champagne in our swim togs and watched the sun set over the Chao Praya. Big clean rooms. Comfortable bed, and great dark blackout curtains for sleeping in. New.

Minuses: That last one, new, would be part of the problem. This hotel has to work the bugs out, and would merit a bit more attention from management. Although we had told them it was our anniversary, no mention was made at any point, no note, nothing. Check in and out were both quite long. We got the most expensive "Premium Riva Room" - but don't think it was worth it. A regular Riva room would have saved us a 1000 baht. When we came out to have a drink our first evening, we found one of the waiters asleep on the couch. The breakfast was promising but results were mediocre - the eggs floretine with salmon was cold, the orange juice not 100% oranges. And while room service was mentioned in their in-room info, there was no menu and the front desk staff were not sure how to handle our request for ice cream.

All this can be addressed, again, by more attention by management. At the price charged, in our case 4500 baht with breakfast, we would expect more. It has potential. My recommendation - stay here if looking for a river escape, but don't bother with the breakfast, until they get it right - go across the street to Ricky's (also for the frozen strawberry margaritas, at 120B each!). Get the regular Riva room. Be aware there is no bathtub (also surprising at this price - and there is plenty of room for one, so I don't understand this decision). But the pool is lovely, the rooms fine, the location great - so use the hotel as your base and explore the river.

Room Tip: Go for the regular Riva room. Good view of the river, much lower cost.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my weekend at Riva Surya, it is a new, contemporary hotel in the boutique style and has lots of charm and appeal. The location by the river side is spectacular and access to the Khao San Road area so convenient.
My conversations with reception always seemed more business-like than friendly, not overjoyed at paying for my room before I'd seen it and being asked for 1000 baht deposit against possible use of the mini bar, but generally the staff around the hotel were helpful .
My room was beautiful, clean, a view of the river and the bathroom was ultra-modern. Breakfast was OK, buffet quite limited but choice of cooked to order dishes very good.
The swimming pool is terrific and the area around it is stylish, it was a real pleasure to relax there and watch the river traffic pass by - pier 13 is immediately outside the hotel, so convenient for accessing other areas of Bangkok.
I traveled alone but will return with my family in January, hope they don't want another deposit for my unused mini-bar.

The Riva Surya is a fabulous find! It's in one of the best locations in the city, yet has a feeling of being an island escape. You can swim, lounge, or dine in a beautiful setting overlooking the river. The rooms are lovely and the staff treat you like family and consistently go the extra mile. Ms. Patty and Mr. Prawit were on duty while we were, and they were spectacular. We hated to leave!

Room Tip: Ask for a riverfront room.

Originally decided to stay at this brand new hotel for a night so we could be close to Khao San Road for a night on the town. However, the rooms and location we so good we stayed another night and delayed our trip to Koh Tao!

The hotel is right on the river and we had a View of the river which was great. It is within walking distance of Khao San road if you are interested in the traveller scene and also a stroll to the grand palace and the many sights of old Bangkok.

Staff were amazing and obviously going above and beyond to help us enjoy our stay.

Loved it and will definately stay there again when next in Bangkok.

This is a brand new hotel in a great location on the river bank. It is close to Khaosan Road and the Royal Palace and its easy to get around using the river ferry (they were providing free day tickets when I stayed). Lovely pool and the food in the restaurant was really good. The welcome and service were great. Good air con, very comfortable bed, and the riverview room had a big balcony as well.

I stayed in this hotel for 3 nights on my recent trip to Bangkok and had a very pleasant experience. It is brand new property and the pool area facing the river is spectacular. The rooms are spacious and all have a river view. Breakfast was very good and the staff is super attentive.
