We stayed at the Riva Surya this weekend after reading about it in the paper - a one night escape to celebrate our 10th anniversary (where did those years go?!). It was a nice stay, but not outstanding. Too many things just not quite right, but a lovely location, and much is right here - so, to summarize:
Pluses: Great riverside location. Close to KhaoSan Road, and all that action. Right on the river, right next to the express boat dock, with a lovely small pool where we drank champagne in our swim togs and watched the sun set over the Chao Praya. Big clean rooms. Comfortable bed, and great dark blackout curtains for sleeping in. New.
Minuses: That last one, new, would be part of the problem. This hotel has to work the bugs out, and would merit a bit more attention from management. Although we had told them it was our anniversary, no mention was made at any point, no note, nothing. Check in and out were both quite long. We got the most expensive "Premium Riva Room" - but don't think it was worth it. A regular Riva room would have saved us a 1000 baht. When we came out to have a drink our first evening, we found one of the waiters asleep on the couch. The breakfast was promising but results were mediocre - the eggs floretine with salmon was cold, the orange juice not 100% oranges. And while room service was mentioned in their in-room info, there was no menu and the front desk staff were not sure how to handle our request for ice cream.
All this can be addressed, again, by more attention by management. At the price charged, in our case 4500 baht with breakfast, we would expect more. It has potential. My recommendation - stay here if looking for a river escape, but don't bother with the breakfast, until they get it right - go across the street to Ricky's (also for the frozen strawberry margaritas, at 120B each!). Get the regular Riva room. Be aware there is no bathtub (also surprising at this price - and there is plenty of room for one, so I don't understand this decision). But the pool is lovely, the rooms fine, the location great - so use the hotel as your base and explore the river.
