“Excellent Location, Good Value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2009

We stayed at the Buddy Lodge hotel for 3 nights (our whole stay in Bangkok).
Staying was my partner and I, then in a room opposite my sister and her 2 friends.. (NB you pay an additional charge for a 3rd person - you literally get a mattress on the floor so you may be drawing straws!)
Ideal location as hotel is directly on Khao San Road - HEAD TOWARDS McDONALDS AND HOTEL RECEPTION IS LOCATED IN THROUGH SHOPPING CENTRE ENTRANCE NEXT TO MCDONALDS - We wandered aimlessly around for 10 miuntes before finding!
Clean and definitely one of the nicer places to stay on Khao San Road. Not the nicest view from the balcony and was quite noisy at night (we were on same floor as swimming pool - i think 3rd) but you expect this for the central location - I would suggest a higher floor to make it quieter - but it didn't prevent us sleeping.
Staff are friendly and helpful - providing you with an information sheet with details on how to remain safe in Bangkok and avoid falling for the 'standard cons' - definitely read this as it is very useful.
Breakfast is served in Mulligans Irish Bar - buffet self service with egg station to make freshly fried eggs and omelettes, bacon, croissants, pastries, cereals, fruit juices, teas, coffees and fruits. You can go up as many times as you wish - Delicious
Swimming pool is quite small but is clean and ideal just for a quick dip to cool down after a day of sightseeing. Was never very busy.
There are definitely cheaper places to stay in Bangkok around the Khao San Road area but was nice to have a haven to come back to so I would say this is good value.
Other Things I would recommend whilst in Bangkok:-
1) If visiting at a weekend, try the weekend market at Chatachuk (you can get to via skytrain). Great for clothes/gifts etc and cheaper than Khao San Road
2) See a Muay-Thai kickboxing fight at either Lumphini or Ratchadamnoen stadiums
3) A cocktail at the Vertigo Bar, top floor of the Banyan Tree Hotel (at nightime you get a stunning view of bangkok)

If you want the convenience of Khao San Road in Bangkok, but have no desire to swill beer from buckets until 6 am or sleep in the company of those who do, the Buddy Lodge Hotel is a good option. The room are clean and beautiful, breakfast is included, there is a roof top pool, there are little extras like fresh fruit in your room and a 30 min Thai massage with your stay. It is also relatively quiet. Even for a budget traveler, it is an affordable luxury.

A fairly decent hotel, biggish, clean, large balconies, fairly comfy beds. Busy but welcoming. Excellent location, right in the middle of everything. This means it's quite noisy but after a flight you won't care! We stayed 2 nights. We could've stayed 1 night and still seen everything we wanted to. Don't stay here too long as there's so many better places. This is a good introduction to Thai food and people. Quite a hectic location but easy to find.

I would go back here. It's a good starting point for backpackers who like a bit of comfort.
Right in the centre. Breakfast area is large and airy.
Rooms have dark wooden features.
The only minus was some tiny animals walking up and down the wall in the bathroom only.

If you are willing to stay on the crazy Khao San road--the mecca of backpackers, then this is good resting spot.

The carnival like atmosphere at times on Khao San can make some feel a little overwhelmed here. The music and hubbub outside can permeate the place. (The place is sometimes overrun with young teenies waiting to get into the local bar situated on the lobby level).

For all the Bangkok sightseeing, this place is well located near all the classic walking tours from Lonely planet.

Room was clean with nice balcony. Decent accomodations (A/C tv , etc). Breakfast was pretty good. Good price. So really not roughing it too much here in backpacker central.

Decent hotel, which costs a little bit more than the average in the area, but for that you get a bit more too. Swimming pool and rooms are very nice. Although there are no underground or skytrain stations near by, there are plenty of tuk tuk and taxi drivers. Get a room on the 5th floor if you want to sleep easier.

We went to Buddy Lodge the last tree days of our stay in beautiful Thailand. But what a disappontment! When you opened the door into the room you met a row stench, and the bedclothes were moisty. It was ants on the floor and other rare bugs laid dead in corners.

The location at the hotel is good if you like noise and crowded shopping, but we were satisfied after a halfh day and the rest of the stay we got out of the street quite fast in the morning.

If you're a backpakker looking for a cheep stay may Buddy Lodge be a ok stay, but if you want some comfort, clean bedclothes and a shower with hot water, this is not a stay for you! I will never go back. Bangkok is great, but Buddy Lodge was a big disappointment. You can get some much better in this town.
