In my opinion, Sukhumvit Bangkok is the liveliest street i have visited in Bangkok. it has something for everyone. First of all, reaching on this street is easy with MRT. Next the best of hotels of all ranges, from budget to 5 star, are on this street. This street houses best of restaurants from all the world, you get Indian food, Arab food, contentinental food, and of course Thai food. Street food is also excellent and quite affordable. the bars are all over.. from exotic to street bars even on cycles.
Nana plaza(at Nana MRT) & Soi Cowboy(at Asoka MRT) are a must visit... these place rock at night.
there are ok to excellent massage centers at every corner... (however i found ones at Khao-san road better in quality of massage(bus number 3 from Sukhumvit to Khao-San road - 10 bath ticket)
Best of shopping malls- on this street - Lotus, MBK and others.....
The street is awake right from 6am in the morning untill 4am in the night. it is at it's best between 9pm and 2am, then it starts slowing down a bit.....
the transportation- taxis, tuk-tuks, busses and MRT are available. however one should avoid travel by taxi or busses between 7pm and 10pm- walking may be faster during these hours. of course MRT is the fastest mode at any time of the day.
i stayed at Hotel Ambasador near Nana MRT station.. a good central place at waking distance from most happening areas...
i would recommend to stay at Sukhumvit during stay at Bangkok and you will not be disapointed.

It makes me very sad to see that tourism in Thailand is suffering so badly due to the recent coup.
I have been living in Bangkok and using Thailand as a base for the last 7 years whilst traveling to various parts of the world for my job. I have never felt more safe and cannot understand why tourists are not coming as much these days.
I think it is bad news that most countries have issued negative travel advisories when the facts say that Thailand is still a very safe holiday destination. Local people and businesses are suffering needlessly.
Please pass the word that there is no reason to stay away.
It's business as usual.

Sukhumvit has traffic jam 24/7 365 days in a years. There are many good restaurants, western and Thai, bars, but parking is hard to find especially in Thonglor. Restaurants in a modern part of town Pleonchit, Chidlom, Central World provide much of the same quality in newer ambient and plenty of parking.
