and possible partly the sewage system. However, this is a working river you will see tug-boats hauling material up and down the river and most of all you will see plenty of long tail boats for charter. I did the long tails year's ago and remembered it to be a good experience, however this time I just took the boat up and down the river checking out the sights along the way. There are three other options, besides chartering a long tail:
Option 1 - jump on the tourist boat. One way ticket 40 baht and full day ticket 150 baht
Option 2 - jump on the local boat. One way ticket 15 baht. It is the more economical option but the backside is that the boats don't run as frequent as the tourist boats - so be prepared to wait.
Option 3. Do a dinner cruise but be selective - I would recommend something smaller such as Loy Nava dinner cruise, I did their cruise years ago as well. Food is good but adjusted to not being to spicy.
Regardless of option traveling up and down the river is a nice experience.
