The hotel has started renovation; interior renovation, with a minimum of noise. The only noise I could hear yesterday was a crying Japanese baby. The hotel wants to improve the property in order to provide better accomodation and service.
I honestly think they have to, because there is lot of competition around the Hualampong station.
I do hope prices will not go up very much. Prices in their restaurant are up: 'Belgian style'. A large beer costs still 100 baht, but now you get a bottle of 500 ml, before you got a bottle of 650 ml, huhu.
Always remember that I consider this hotel as extremely good value for money at a top location, renovation or not.

Room Tip: take a room aat the back of the hotel

Began Bangkok travel by staying in this hotel and ended again with same hotel. staff were good, location was very near to the metro as well as chinatown. Distance from malls like MBK or silom areas is not very much (maybe 1.5km, walking distance). Value for money was good. Just 800 with AC and breakfast for two!

I have been staying at this hotel most years since 1986! Overall, it has seemed to change little in all that time, and I like it that way. There have been recent upgrades (flat screen tv, spring water each day, tea/coffee making each day, good western or chinese breakfast included) but it is basically a really nice old friend. I now know most of the staff, and they are great every time. This hotel is very efficiently run and the desk staff will do things for you like getting a taxi to the airport at 03.00 am etc at a fraction of the price (currently 450 baht including the toll charge) you would be asked by any driver. Do not confuse efficiency with unfriendliness - the chinese staff are focused upon work with a different outlook to europeans and americans. As has been said, the location for an early arrival, or departure, by train is outstanding. Far easier to get the train to Chiang Mai at 08.40 am by walking across the bridge than being conned by tuk-tuk drivers from Khao San area! This place is also 2 mins walk around the corner from the Golden Buddha temple, and 5 mins from Thanon Yaowarat/Soi Texas for some of the best food in Thailand. The hotels own restaurant is amazingly good, very cheap (60 to 140 baht for marvellously original food) serving south chinese specialities which you cannot get elsewhere. All meals are served to look like the best nouvelle cuisine and are well worth a photograph. I cannot praise this hotel enough!

Room Tip: If you are alone ask for a single rate, but if you have a friend the twin rate is outstanding and ch...

The location is really great across the small bridge from Hua lamphong train station and walking distance from China town.
Easily accessible to/from all around town - by MRT or any other way of transportation.
The hotel is rather old but fairly clean and comfortable enough for a couple of days.
Good value for money.
It is ideal for budget travelers traveling by train.

Add info: Beds are really hard so keep that in mind if it's important for you.

Firstly to get to the hotel in only 2 minites from the station, go out of the main exit where the taxis are located, cross the road, then go through a small car park. You will see a bridge over the khlong canal, it is painted brightly with flowers. Go over the bridge and right in front of you is the hotel.

It is a little old, the corridor are a little bleak. Checkin in very efficient, the ladies have a tried and tested system. You are shown to your room, there is a lift. My room was very clean with TV and aircon for 650 baht, but again, no frills or bright colours in the room.

my room was at the back, so very quiet. The drinks from fridge seemed expensive. I could not turn the aircon down, maybe remote was missing. Fixtures and fittings all worked but were a little dated.

But a bargain room in a useful location.

This hotel really defines convenience. Located across the Bangkok main railway station it is ideal for travelers catching trains at odd hours. If you are on a budget you can walk to most of the interesting sites or take local buses. Wat Traimit is less than a 5 minute walk from here. Chinatown, perhaps the best place to eat, shop and hang around in Bangkok is minutes away. The hotel itself is very affordable and the service is warm and helpful. Rooms were clean and not noisy at all. American breakfast is included. So is coffee and drinking water. You can leave your luggage for free and come back to pick it up later. All in all a very convenient place to stay and explore not just Bangkok but Thailand itself!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the back of the main road are quieter.
