New Merry V Guesthouse
Ranked #375 of 1,419 Speciality Lodging in Bangkok
Reviewed 28 July 2011

New Merry V is one of the cheaper options in the Khao San Road Area, we paid 290 bhat for a room with ensuite and fan. Whilst very basic and cubicle-esque, it was clean, and well located near the river-ferry stop and close walk to Khao-San action. It was quiet most of the time, although of the 7 nights we stayed there was loud music until midnight two nights but this didn't bother us as Bangkok is a late night, late morning start kind of place. For somewhere cheap but liveable, I recommend it.

Stayed in Merry V because of the raving reviews and everything seems perfect.

It's a bland and simple room, but perfectly clean and aircon rooms also have a fan (if you put on both on low you get a perfect temperature for sleeping). The beds are linen and are actually able to breathe so you'll sleep like a baby.

Service is decent (They're playing Farmville but they'll stop for you). No free wifi. But for students this is the very best value in Bangkok. Don't forget to get some streetfood from in front of the hostel.

We stayed at New Merry House in a double room for 290 Bath/night. Of course, for that price the room was very small, without other facilities such as aircon, tv or hot water, but it worked fine for saving some money at the end of our trip. It's a clean and quiet place but next time we would rather stay at a more expensive room.

My husband and I booked into Merry V when the usual place we go to next door (Green House, also good but more expensive) was full. We were just looking for something as low cost as possible, we're only in the room for sleeping so we don't need TVs and all mod cons!

For 200 baht we got a double room (2 single beds) with a good working roof fan, and a shared bathroom. The room was clean, very basic, but what you'd expect for something so cheap, just the beds, the fan, and a window looking out onto a corridor with a mozzie screen and curtain. For 200 baht this was great for us - we look to spend less on rooms and more on food and trips!

There were 3/4 toilets on our floor, plus 2 shower rooms, which were in good order and were cleaned regularly.

The reception staff were nice, and there's a little eating area downstairs that serves breakfasts. There's also a luggage storage area we used once checked out, to keep our bags in til the end of the day - there was no real checking in system for the luggage, it just got put into a back room with other luggage, but our bags were returned fully intact and we had no problems in general.

Overall, this place was a very good, clean basic guest house that we'll definitely use again. It has everything we need at a very low price, plus it's in a great location on Soi Rambuttri, near to the action but far enough away (5-10 mins) from the loud horrors of Khao San Road.

Backpacker guesthouse, pay each day as it comes and it's clean without fuss. It is also in a great location. For the price it is good. No lift so try to keep on a lower floor. There is no safe or fridge but the aircon works and the place is immaculately clean.

Good coffee shop with excellent food in the foyer, Rickys coffee shop.

In July 2010 I stayed here after me and my sister had a long flight to this country and this city. We really enjoyed this place. We had a room that was in the building that was further from the street and we had a good night sleep. We stayed for a few day's until we left Bangkok.

The reception area may look odd for first time asia travellers, but the people were very friendly. The twin room was spacious and clean, and next to the usual lock also lockable with an extra lock you bring yourself. The shower could use a bit more pressure though. But next to that a good place to start your journey in Thailand

This is a basic guesthouse that is just what we needed from a guesthouse. It was quiet, had a cold air conditioner, clean, private bathroom, and a very inexpensive price. This guesthouse is located a short 10 minute walk to Khao San Road and just a minute or two to the river ferry pier. The ladies that ran the place were quiet. We didn't really request any help or advice from them so I can't comment on this. The guesthouse doesn't have a website but I set a reservation over the phone and they were expecting me once I arrived late at night (near midnight) and able to check us in. We got a double room with hot water and paid 590 baht / night. The room is small but clean. The bed had sheets that were clean. I can't say the bed was comfortable, but no different from all the other beds we slept on in Thailand. The bathroom was relatively spacious for Thailand. The hot water was not really hot but more of luke warm, but after walking around sweating all day in Bangkok, it was a very welcoming shower. They also provided towels and some soap for the room. There are plenty of great back-alley restaurants / food stands around that have very cheap food. They have an internet cafe downstairs that is very cheap (as is all internet cafes in Bangkok; $1 / hour).

I would recommend this guesthouse for people that just need a clean, inexpensive place to sleep at night and nothing more. We were backpacking and this guesthouse served our needs 100%.
