“Live like Leonardo in "The Beach"!”
Reviewed 28 February 2014 via mobile

If you've not seen the film "The Beach" starring Leonardo DiCaprio then you have to watch it before arriving in Thailand! Anyway the single rooms with shared bathroom at this hostel are exactly like the ones at the start of the movie when he's in Bangkok. But smaller. Good to meet people though as I got the impression that the corridor and balcony can be a pretty social area. I stayed one night in this room before moving to a larger private room. This was much better and well worth the extra money in my opinion. A very large double bed, a lot of room space and hot water all the time. The food was ok in the restaurant downstairs but nothing special (I only had breakfast there). The staff are not very friendly. It's in a fantastic location at the bottom of Rambuttri Street which is like Khao San Roads little brother but much nicer in my opinion. My only moan would be having to pay for the wifi, for most people this is an essential item and you end up buying it everyday so should just add a little onto the room cost and provide for free like everywhere else.

Paid B420 for a tiny ac room on the top floor. Conveniently located, shoddy but relatively clean interior, gloomy hallways, no towels, ac worked fine, not too noisy despite hanging right over the street, little balcony adjacent good for a look down at the street. We moved to a nicer place after one night, but only because we were in the 800-1200 baht budget.

We found this guesthouse while we were looking for a room in Khao San area. Rambuttri area is much nicer and quieter, the room we got in New Merry V was simple, but clean. It offered more than the places in the are for the same money. We got a triple room on the third floor. The bathroom was clean and had hot water. Linen and towels were fresh and smelled good. The fan was a bit creepy, it looked as if it was about to fall down, but that was the only nuisance. The staff was helpful but neutral. It is a good place to stay for one or two nights.

We have stayed here on different occasions and it is a reasonably good value given the price. The AC and private bathroom rooms are cheaper then others in the neighborhood. Some rooms are cleaner than others so it pays to look at a few. It often has rooms when other guesthouses are full.

In my six months in Thailand, I've stayed in some rough places, but this one was the worst, hands down.

The price is cheap, but there are similar priced places in the area, of much better quality.

My main complaint is the staff. They are so rude. They made you feel bad for asking simple questions.
Our room had a shared bathroom, in which the water was freezing. I know it's nice to have a cool shower in Bangkok, but it was unbearably cold. Also, there were no plug sockets in the room or outside, which meant phones etc had to be left downstairs to charge - neither safe nor practical. The rooms were so small, you could barely turn round, with the most uncomfortable, camp-bed type beds.
But above all, the horrible staff just made this place unbearable!

Avoid it like the plague!

I'm not a complainer but have also traveled enough to find the good in a place... The rooms remind me of a prison room, the service staff made me feel guilty for asking simple questions, no free wifi, no breakfast, no delights.

We stayed here out of pure exhaustion... And for that, it works. Still cost is 750 baht a night for a private double.

Ugh, I'm annoyed even thinking about it. So much better value everywhere/anywhere else!

The first night in Bangkok we stayed at Erawan which is a totally competent place but at nearly twice the price and no view so we moved here the second night.

Room 144 at Merry V is a gem, it has natural light and you can see some high rises as well as the cable bridge. Not bad for 420 B double with air conditioning and private bath.

On to of that, it has a balcony next to the room that isn't private but nobody else came during our stay.

Otherwise, it is very basic room with friendly staff. Towel service is 20, wifi is 20 for an hour, 60 for 24 hours, and 120 for 72 hours.

If you can get one of the upper floor rooms like room 144, don't pass it up. The other rooms evaluate on a case by case basis.
