Please, if you are a first time visitor to Bangkok, or a backpacker heading off on your S.E.A. adventure, dont believe the hype of this place, find somewhere better to stay, like over on Sathon road or Silom road at the other end of the town.
Ok you are in Bangkok, so go and check the place out, find a place to sit and watch the freak show parade past you as the afternoon turns into evening, but only stay here if you want to be like every other western backpacker, before you know it you will have a Beer Lao singlet and a scruffy beard just like everyone else who stays there!
This place has every cliche you could think off, fake Banksy shirts and more stupidly fake Beats headphones for sale everywhere, get your fake IDs made here, get a tat, book an overpriced tour, get a seat on a rip off bus to Cambodia or stay in a not so cheap old dirty room that 10,000 other people have slept in, walk up the street and people will jump out at you trying to get you to buy tailor made suits, or go to a ping pong show, if you are going to eat there then eat on the street from a noodle store in the evening, forget the restaurants, expensive, slow service, hassled by street hawkers, not so good food. Also the bars are a rip off and there is only so many times you can hear a Thai guy singing wonder wall and fast car on an acoustic guitar, again in the evening find a street bar if you want a drink, their buckets are usually bigger and about half the price of a bar.
Finally if you are there in the evening forget about getting a taxi from anywhere around the area, taxis have meters so you dont have to haggle, thats the whole idea, but if you try and get a taxi from the KSR area they will all tell you "Ooooh, meter not work now"..or.."im going home now, drop you on my way home", even though the taxi has been sitting on the street for the last 30 minutes, waiting to rip someone off. They will only take you if you pay 200% of the actual fare, so in this case its better to take a tuk tuk, less stuffing around at least. Last night saw an English girl ask 5 taxis in a row to use the meter and none would, and all the taxis were at the "taxi rank" just off KSR.
Please note this is not just a one off view of this place, I have been there a few times and even stayed there many years ago before the internet was a big part of traveling, from what i have seen this trip this place is showing its age big time and becoming a total cliche of travel in S.E.A.
There is more to Bangkok than this place, make sure you go out and find it!
