“Never never never stay at this hotel”
Reviewed 20 January 2014

I have travelled extensivly over asia and this is the worst hotel I have ever seen and experienced. We stayed here for one night only and on that night we only unlocked one bag and guess what that one and only bag was robbed. Our fault partly to blame as it was not re-locked but seeing as we were only there for a quick dinner out and then sleep we thought this would be safe. The room door was not forced and had a self locking door so it was only openend with a key say no more! In addition the rooms are very very basic cold shower AC not working, dirty and are very very noisey even though we had a room at the back. Please do not stay here for the same money the other guest houses close by are a better option!

People always see things differently.

I liked the food last night; you didn't.

But sometimes opinions are so different that I simply wonder whether others and I are even describing the same thing.

Such is my experience of the Sawasdee Bangkok Inn.

Given some of its negative reviews, it was only the low price and great location that made me decide to take a look before committing to even a single night.

I refused to even make a reservation for one night as I didn't really think it would take me more than three minutes to understand why so many reviewers think that this as one of the worst in Bangkok.

The problem is that the hotel I saw was not at all like the bad reviews suggest.

Some points:

The hotel and rooms are spotless.

Yes...I am sure someone can look under their bed and find something like dust or a bit of missed garbage and post it online.

I can find the same in their home, but that doesn't mean their home is not very clean, even for guests.

This is a CLEAN hotel with a small army of full-time cleaning staff around the whole hotel from 5:00 am until 5:00 pm.

Several times, they were there at 7:00 pm.

2.It is not some broken-down building being held together by string.

It is an older building that has been very well looked after on a continuous basis.

The hotel is regularly repaired, and although I can see small things that could be fixed, they are small and likely can be found in every hotel and in all of our homes.

3 The staff are pleasant...very pleasant (very, very pleasant!)

Every one of them.

ALL of the staff are friendly and welcoming, an especially hard task with the negative reviews that they have to read.

I especially want to thank Sutthiporn, the manager, who has to respond to all the negative reviews.

Before my visit, I assumed she was just making endless poor excuses for a poorly-run hotel.

Now I cannot imagine her frustration at running a hotel in a professional and friendly way only to get complaints from people showing up to a very good two-and-a-half to three star hotel but never hesitating to complain about every single thing they think is wrong.

This is a very good three-star hotel.

I love my job and am the subject of many anonymous posts online. I read them all.

I think if I woke up every day to more comments about how badly I do my job, it would certainly be demoralizing.

Even one single negative comment affects me every time.

Sutthiporn has a thankless job with so many people willing to point out the slightest fault, and so few saying "Thank you".

I suspect that she know that almost every single guest is really quite happy, but that those who aren't, don't hesitate to say so.

Those of us who loved this hotel should write more.

4. The room is precisely as pictured.

A few people wrote that you don't get what you see.

I am puzzled at what these people saw because it was either a different picture than I saw or maybe a different hotel. The pictures accurately represent the rooms.

The first room I saw I thought was a bit small, so I asked for a larger room.

So, some rooms are small, but no one is claiming that this is a five-star hotel with rooms large enough to have a party in.

See if they have a larger one available. I did and got one more to my liking.

5. The bathroom is spotless.

The shower is near the toilet as some complain, but this is extremely common in less expensive hotels all, over the world. Not ideal, but it is also not ideal that I didn't win the lottery, but I don't complain about that either.

Lift the toilet seat when you shower, and if really hate this bathroom set-up, don't travel in Asia because it is extremely common.

6. The location is perfect.

This is the 'real' Thailand that is why I endlessly go to Asia and not Europe. Not that the wealthiest houses in Thailand are also not the "real" Thailand, but I like the sounds and feeling of places like Khaosan Road.

7. The key deposit, a complaint by many people. You get it back...it's that simple.

Without a ‘substantial' key deposit (about $15), people would be more likely to forget to return the key.

I feel safer knowing that there are not Bangkok tourists walking around with a key to my room and access to all my belongings.

Finally, I am truly at a loss to understand the endless negative reviews that are written about this hotel.

It is classified as a two-and-a-half to three star hotel.

This just means "not fancy".

It doesn't mean the hotel has dirty rooms, dirty sheets, dirty toilets, no television, no air conditioner, no hair dyer, no wifi, no buffet breakfast and unpleasant staff.

The Sawasdee Bangkok Inn is on the right side of all those points.

The buffet breakfast has coffee, tea, orange juice, ice water, sliced cucumber, sliced tomato and lettuce with several salad dressings, bread (or toast) with jam, boiled rice chicken, fried noodles with vegetables, chicken sausages, pancakes and eggs...and more.

I have posted photographs of the breakfast buffet to show that this is not a hotel trying to save ten baht by offering the cheapest breakfast possible. The buffet reflects the whole quality of this hotel and the quality of its rooms.

For reasons that I cannot understand, this hotel is maligned by every guest that sees something wrong, and those of us who have a wonderful visit seem to be too quiet about our experiences.

It is for this reason that I have taken so much time to write this review.

The Sawasee Bangkok Inn simply a good, clean, friendly, and safe place to stay, independent of the number of stars.

You cannot get into a perfectly good Volkswagen and complain that it is a badly-made Porsche because a Volkswagen is simply not a Porsche that was badly built.

I am giving the Sawasdee Bangkok Inn the high highest rating, not because it is the best hotel in Bangkok, but for the same reason I would give a Volkswagen five stars: It isn't a Porsche, but for the price, it is a excellent car just as it is today.

And for the very delightful, friendly and beautiful manager Sutthiporn,...she gets a full five stars!

I must admit I stayed here for long 10 days and at first i din't like the place and people here. My first review was done on first night and I was wrong because the first impression wasn't good, room was small and view was terrible. After few nights I have realised that staff are very nice once they get to know you and you don't shout at them ;) Location is great, Kaoshan Road within half a minute walk, it's fairly quiet in the night. Internet is not working in the room but you can seat downstairs and go online, beer is avaiable in the receptions fridge so there other soft drinks and tea and coffee I believe. It's not a place to stay with familly but if you are single or student you can enjoy Bangkok night life and touris attractions within nearly a walk distance.

Room Tip: aks for it :)

Simply put, this is one of the worst places I have ever encountered.

The staff at reception appear to have taken a course in dismissivness - you are made to feel that your are wasting their precious time. The place is more than seedy after dark with insidious characters lurking about creating an air of uneasiness. Cleanliness appears to be a concept best left at reception; the hotel is upsettingly filthy - this can be best demonstrated by encountering a cat doing its business in front of a door, one along from mine! Room space is... well... tight and the breakfast is not worth paying extra for.

What is most frustrating is that the place is hardly cheap. Sadly, you pay top dollar to stay on Khao San Road!

All in all: not a pleasant experience.
