A walk away from Kao San - in the hub without the fuss!

Review of Hotel De Moc
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 Sept 2011
D’Moc captures the entrepreneurial ability of The Buddy Group (owners of the Buddy Lodge in Kao San) in making a 70’s style uninspired hotel into something quite trendy and reasonable. For me one of the best selling points needs to be the location, just a nice walk away (if you can digest the fumes) from Kao San. The rooms are good too, spacious, with all the necessary bits as well as some unnecessary ones and with balconies (fab), having a bit of your own outdoor space in Bangkok is a luxury. Bathrooms are fine too, albeit a very annoying step between the room and the bathroom, don’t know how many times I tripped on it before registering. Staff are always welcoming and they like to interact, good to be able to exchange some words without the general puzzled look on your Thai host – but this is Thailand, so I shouldn’t expect my host to speak English, it should be up to me to speak Thai (long way from there yet). The pool definitely needs some attention, if the hotel is 70’s – the pool is 50’s, but who can complain about having a deep in the middle of Bangkok for this price range. Didn’t bother with breakfast and always go out to one of the nearby cafes... The outdoor restaurant is pricier than its equivalents in Kao, but hey... sometimes you just need a beer and something to munch, the quality of the food is good. I have been travelling in and out and Bangkok for over 20 years and I have tried very much every sort of hotel during the years, but D’Moc definitely is on my top 5, love the price, the rooms and the service... If you are a 5* kind of person, maybe not for you... but for me D’Moc rocks!

Hotel De Moc is a clean and comfortable hotel, which offers an excellent buffet breakfast, and is in a perfect location for the historical side of the city. All major attractions are easy to reach either by foot or in a tuk tuk, and the free shuttle to the Khao San Road is a good little extra for those wishing to enjoy some night life, but stay in a quieter location. Having a pool is also a bonus in the heat. The hotel staff were lovely, they always had a smile, and they are very helpful (especially Meuk, Hatha and Wei), and the on site travel desk booked tickets for a show we wanted to see at no extra cost! All in all we had a great stay here and would come back again.

Arrived after a night bus ride in the early morning. Had to pay extra for early check-in and got a room with a wall directly in front of the balcony. It felt a bit like a bad joke. Supposedly no other rooms for three people were available. Why do they have such rooms at all? The toilet didn't flush, was fixed during the day though. The water pressure was extremely low so it was difficult to take a shower. The breakfast was bland with the exception of good coffee. So if you like a good cup of coffee with a horrible room and a terrible bathroom for a lot of money I would recommend this hotel. We left after one night of course.

We flew to Bangkok and stayed here first.
The hotel has a good airy lobby, and the reception staff are very friendly although English slightly limited. Our double room was a good size, although 2 singles put together, but apart from that was fine. Was all clean with Air Con and free wi-fi, although this was a bit slow and unreliable.
It has a very good size pool outside which was lovely, with a bar and restaurant (although we didn't buy anything). Breakfast was a buffet style and very good.
Location is about 10 mins walk to Kao San Road.
Overall we liked it and thought it good value for Bangkok.

This 3 star budget hotel was in a great location - only a short tuk-tuk (or taxi) ride to all the major sights like the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Vimanek Palace, Khoa San Road and Chayo Phraya River. The customer service was excellent. The reception spoke ok english, but there were many employees that can comunicate in english. The rooms were basic, clean and quiet with firm mattresses (which seems to common in Thailand). The hotel itself was simple and could use an update, but was very clean and provided everything we needed. Internet was not free, however, there were computers available, nice swimming pool, good restaurant and a very helpful and polite travel agent on site. We definitely reccommend this hotel for budget travellers and would stay there again ourselves!
