“LOVE the Millennium”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 November 2008

I just came back from a week stay at the Hilton Millennium. This is a gorgeous hotel located right on the Chao Phraya River. The hotel offers free shuttles to the Sky Train and Chao Phraya River Express boats that will take you to anywhere in Bangkok.

Our rooms at the hotel was phenonmenal and I just can not ask for more. You'll not regret staying at this hotel, the lounge, and buffet breakfast at the hotel is to died for, not your typical just eggs, they have Japanese, French, Thai, Fruits, Salads and your egg station. It is the best way to start the day.

Everything about this hotel was too crowded. The site of the hotel appears to be too small for the size of the hotel - - its long and narrow and the hotel fills it to capacity, with very limited outside space in which too relax. The hotel was also filled to capacity while I was there, which made for long lift waits (only to find them full when they did appear) and breakfast each morning was a scrum. The rooms were okay, bathrooms nice and they did provide a welcome relief from the apparent chaos in the rest of the hotel and the gym was good - with very modern equipment. The pool was good to look at, but the number of seats on the 'beach' very limited again for the number of people in the hotel. All in all, I was glad to leave for a bit of a rest and I do hope that I just picked the wrong week to stay there.

My boyfriend and I were on our first trip to Thailand so were keen to experience the sights, smells and sounds of Bangkok before moving on to relax at the beach.

We spent huge amounts of time beforehand researching where to stay in Bangkok and found it all a little bit daunting due to Bangkoks sheer size. In the end we plumped for this hotel instead of ones in the Sukhumvit/Silom area and we were delighted we did.

After an hours taxi drive from the airport we arrived at the hotel and walked into a stunning lobby, cool and relaxed and went through checking in. We had a room on the 18th floor facing up river. We found the views of the sunset each night wonderful and Bangkok at night is a much nicer sight than by day. For this alone the river location was a better option.

The room was modern, the facilities were top class and the breakfast (a key consideration!) was amazing including cuisines all over the world in a stunning riverside setting (in or out if the heat was too much).

For those who've read about this hotel being the wrong side of the river, don't worry. The free hotel river boat takes you to either
the Skytrain stop or to River City opposite to be "right" side of the river. It takes very little time and is really relaxing amidst the hustle and bustle of the built up city areas. Last boat is 11pm from River City and 11:45pm from Skytrain.

You can also catch boats (costing as little as 13BHT one way) to the Grand Palace and main temples - we thought this the best way of getting up there, cheap, an experience, a great way to see Bangkok, quick and cool.

Ok.... Bangkok itself ....

We went in the "cool season" Oh my god...cool???? We've never been as hot! So take light things but have a waterproof for when the heavens open because when they do...boy they do!

Also, Bangkok is huge. It's Greater London size but without the travel connections. So you can walk (and its not an easy place to navigate and you'll be constantly bombarded by locals trying to make money out of you from trips and tuk tuks... which sadly does make you less trusting of people there) but you will spend a lot of time not getting far. Taxi's are cheaper than the UK by far. We had a trip across town from the flower market to Siam Paragon taking 30-40 mins and the fare was 97BHT, less than £2.

The other option is the Tuk Tuk. Beware the chancers but there are people there who will give a good fare. Stop them rather than be approached. And don't be afraid to say no if you dont trust them or if the fare is too high..... they are everywhere!

Must sees.... Wat Phra Kaeo and the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the huge 46m long reclining Buddha. We went to the flower market and indoor locals food market (Talak Pak Khlong) nr China town and it was an amazing experience. And an absolute must is the Suan Lum Night Bazaar. Its huge! The other side of Lumphini Park. Stalls and food galore and just when you think it cant get bigger theres avast indoor arena type place which has food, drink and music aplenty. Fantastic.

A word about Patpong. We felt we had to see it as it was talked about so much. It was a bit seedy but to be fair we walked through it in little time and wondered what the fuss was. Nothing really to do and we moved on to another area.

We had a brief wander around the shops at Siam Paragon... another vast place and we recommend looking round the food set up in the basement. All very Selfridges like but with a Thai twist.

So there you go... Bangkok. Huge, sprawling, hot and humid and amazing rolled into one. Try and walk off the beaten track and you'll see real Bangkok. Earthy gritty and raw in places. Humbling and impoverished.

And if you stay there.... the Hilton gives you a great launchpad in a tranquil setting with the wonderful luxury of air conditioning!!!

Had a great stay at the Hilton Millenium. The hotel is very modern and stylish, service is great , staff are extremely friendly. We were upgrated to an executive room which had a magnificent view over the river. The room and bathroom were nice and modern, the bed was super comfortable. Loved breakfast and the view from the executive club, it also had a good selection of drinks and appetizers before dinner. Had dinner on the restaurant by the river the last night, the food and atmosphere were great. Do not be put off by comments saying that this hotel is on "the other side" of the river. The hotel has its own peer and boat making regular connections to the other side. The river is the way to go to avoid traffic during the day. We organised a boat to take us sightseeing along the river and the smaller canals via the hotel. It was a great way to see Bangkok! We also took a taxi to the night market (15min from Hilton) one evening, all very straight forward.
As a HHonnor member, I have stayed in several Hiltons in various places, this one will certainly not dissapoint you!

Just returned from Millenium Hilton. We had a King Executive Plus Suite with two panoramic windows in the lounge over looking the river and another hugh window in the bedroom, overlooking the river. The only downside being the very small wardrobe in the bedroom. As we were only there for 3 nights at the end of our holiday in Thailand this did not matter but had we been staying for longer it would have been a problem. We ate at the Prime Restaurant where we tasted Kobe steak for the first time. Would highly recommend it and the staff, as in all of the Hotel, were excellent. We have stayed in a few hotels in Bangkok, including the Shangri-La, but this is definitely the best. We normally try a different Hotel each time but can't wait to go back to the Millenium Hilton.

We stayed for 3 nights after 10 nights at the Sarojin, so I was wondering how this hotel was going to match up. I wasn't dissapointed, obvisouly this is a different sort of hotel, for a city hotel this really was one of the best I have ever stayed in. The location is great, we really preffered being this side of the river after all the hustle and bustle of the city. The boat has a free shuttle bus which takes you right to the sky train so getting around isn't a problem. Like the other reviewers we were upgraded to an executive floor and would definantly reccomend this. I am not sure how much it would have been if we had to pay for it, but with all the extra perks you get I am sure it would be worth it. The restaurant and bar areas are pretty impresive and the 360 bar has the best views of the city - better than the sky bar or the vertigo bar. They even gave us a round of cocktails free as we were on our honeymoon. If I was to go back to Bangkok I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. The pool area is fantastic - don't know how you could complain about the water being chilly?!?!?! Its the hottest city in the world, the pool was just the refreshment we needed!!

  • Liked — Pool and the benefits of the executive floor.
