“Very nice hotel slap bang in the middle of china town”
Reviewed 9 January 2012

Shanghai mansion was a very pleasant hotel with friendly staff, great food, excellent rooms with great decor. The perfect restbite from the hustle and bustle of china town. If you havent stayed in china town before, expect busy streets and roads with a lot of smells. Most of them unpleasant. But the hotel is a different world compared to the mayhem of china town. Defo reccomend.

I can't speak highly enough about the Shanghai Mansions in terms of the balance between comfort, style, quiet, location and value in a city with a dizzying array of sleeping options.

First off, this was my fourth stay at the Mansions which are located amazingly and conveniently smack in the middle of Chinatown with a fabulous range of eateries and street food for just walking out the door. Additionally, the location is just close enough to walk to the major tourist attractions while being far enough away to be off the tired tourist track.

The hotel is also just amazingly lovely. Decorated to an incredibly high standard in the style of 1930s Shanghai the design touches and little details in rooms and around the hotel are obviously put there by people with an amazing attention to making your stay awesome. I love the style of the hotel and am in awe of the little things from free minibar to comfy bathrobes that make stays there a real treat.

Above all though, in busy bustling and noisy Bangkok, I have never slept better. The hotel is quiet at night, which is amazing considering how much bustle there is the second you step outside its doors.

I also love the fact the wifi is open, making the internet useful, quick and handy if you're travelling on business.

As for food options, the breakfast is good and plentiful and there is a great free spread included in your room rate, but i think the cooked options could be kicked up a notch. They emulate English and such breakfasts fine but seem more thai imitations than the real things (they are yummy though). The pancakes looked particularly good. But I still think, since most people do eat breakie in the hotel, focusing on breakfast options would make this place unbelievable.

One thing that is amazing is their latest cocktail menu. I highly recommend the "Oriental Gold" cocktail to replenish yourself after a day tramping around the wats and tuk-tuking back from JJ market.

And finally, the staff are lovely and welcoming and go out of their way to make sure you're taken care of... and that's from the restaurant staff to reception to the cleaners.

Seriously, if you're looking for a reasonably priced but excellent place to stay in BKK, this is the one you want to book.

Room Tip: All the rooms I've stayed in on levels 3 4 and 5 are quite amazing. Rooms on upper flows are sli...

If you want something a bit different in Chinatown while in Bangkok, consider Shanghai Mansion. It is a mid-sized boutique hotel that is decorated as a modern incarnation on the Shanghai pre-War glory.

Definitely a blend of modern and classic colonial decor with polished cement floors and bright colors. The bed was comfortable and huge. The room was pitch dark at night, although there was a small window. If you like total sensory deprivation of light and sound at night, this is your dream world.

Breakfast was nice, but not over the top.

Getting taxis to use the meters outside the hotel was a hassle, but this is not necessarily the hotel's fault.

Many food options in the neighborhood and gold shops line the street (Yaowaral Road).

Earlier this year, we stayed at this hotel and it was absolutely flawless. The welcome drink was delicious and our room was perfect. I didn't even notice that there was no window until the 3rd day. The character is the most alluring aspect of this hotel. The location is great, tuk tuks can get you where you need to go very easily and the customer service is just so lovely.

The shower was wonderful and the bath massive. The bed super comfortable and as one of our nights was a saturday night, we had a live musician playing by the pond. The perfect romantic and idillic start to our stay in Thailand.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Mu Dan and asked for something to be back from the street as we were concerned abou...

Been to Bangkok many times, but for the first time decided to be a bit adventurous and stay at the Chinatown area. Found Shanghai Mansion by surfing the net and reading the reviews on tripadvisor.com. I was not disappointed. It's a pleasant boutique hotel decorated to reflect the elegance of 1930s Shanghai. Bed was big and comfortable. The room was roomy and tastefully done. The free mini bar was a nice touch. On the quirky side, the lack of natural light in the room (stained glass windows) and in the hotel and hallways gave it a bit of a gaunt feel. The breakfast was a good selection of popular Chinese, Thai, and Western dishes. The jazz band in the Cotton Bar was very good and liven-up the place. The hotel was strategically located in the middle of Chinatown with lots of excellent street food vendors within steps off the lobby (in fact we accidentally found the best fried rice at one corner and a local person told me the vendor has been at that corner for 30+ something years). Very good experience and good value too.

We stopped off here for just the one night whilst travelling through Bangkok. We brought a printed map with us provided by the hotel which seemed a godsend to the Taxi driver which we caught from the airport, highly recommended preparation to make. On arrival in Chinatown it was a bit overwhelmingly busy and we had to jump out in the middle of the traffic run to the boot to nab our suitcases and proceed past a few street stalls and onto an escalator which looked like it was going into another hectic shopping area.

About halfway up the elevator all nerves fly out the window when you realise you've reached your destination, cool air hits you, staff open the door and take your bag... Ahhhh that's a nice feeling! The decoration was like being in a museum you'd pay good money to go look at, we nabbed several dozen pictures whilst being checked in then proceeded to our room. The bedroom was AMAZIIING! Our room was the Mu Dan (Peony) Classic if I remember correctly, it'd take too long describing every detail so I'll just summarise it by being very romantic, comfortable, extremely spacious and historically decorated. The free mini-bar was also very welcomed after a long trip!

We ventured about the hotel which you could easily spend a good hour or two looking at all the pictures etc. Afterwards, checked out Chinatown which is right outdoors, again was a bit overwhelmed so we returned to this little haven for the night. The evening menu was fantastic, we stayed to the very last minute drinking well recommended cocktails from the staff and listening to live Jazz band, admiring everything going on around us. The live band was one of the highlights and most peaceful/romantic nights of our relationship so far. The pricing was very reasonable for Bangkok especially considering you get to sit by a live band.

Breakfast has an assortment of sweet and savoury dim sums and Chinese foods, all replaced regularly, kept hot and fresh and in abundance even though we were one of the last to arrive. They also cooked you hot breakfasts if that's what you wish, which looked even more appetising. Top class!

The price we paid for the one night was unbeatable considering the service, setting, breakfast & entertainment! We'd also like to vouch for how helpful and friendly the staff were, we had to change holiday dates and called them all the way from England to get a refund/change dates and it was very easy to do.

Highly recommended if you want to experience Chinatown or put simply a world class boutique hotel!

Room Tip: Go for the Mu Dan (Peony) Classic if you are a couple looking for romantic comfort and make sure you...

Helpful staff, lovely decor, peaceful yet right in the heart of it all.

Arrived here from Africa and so so happy we chose this place, from the second we arrived till the moment we left we could not have wanted a nicer place to be.

Room amazing place small enough to be personal breakfast from 0630-1030 free tuk tuk to uptown shops more streetlife than you can shake a stick at

Between my partner and I we have stayed at some super swanky hotels and resorts and while this may not be The Delano or the waldorf it makes up for it with its character as I say arguably mt fav hotel anywhere I have yet stayed 9/10 and if the restaurant was a little better I would score it 10/10

Saty here if you get the chance and a steal its the price of a travelodge back home

Room Tip: All lovely mine was lobby level my tip
