We spent one night here after 2 weeks of island hopping in Thailand. We were extremely impressed with the hotel. The decor is gorgeous - authentic Chinese and the rooms are something quite special. We stayed in the double Peony Suite and it really was gorgeous. Spacious, big bath, shower and a small lounge area. The little touches are great - the minibar is FREE (yes, you read right) the glass bottled water and the concierge service.

It is located right in the heart of China Town which is a totally unique experience. It is HECTIC but I think we experienced it at a really busy time - just before Chinese New Year.

The staff don't speak English too well, but they do try.

We only ate breakfast, and I had the traditional Chinese dim sum breakfast - HEAVEN! We had a cocktail or two and they were ok - good prices. I would definately recommend this spot - it's romantic, exotic and steeped in atmosphere.

We have stayed here 3 times now and it never fails to impress us.

Being in china town it is a little away from the main action but there is loads going on in china town itself which I think is sometimes overlooked by tourists.

Try T&K seafood just outside the hotel for the best seafood in bangkok at the best price.

The hotel is run by an American and he has done a good job here in creating a really nice environment to stay and with great and attentive staff.

I travel a lot with work and I would normally stay in the big chain hotels for that, but next time I am away on business I might choose to stay here instead for a unique experience.

We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of Shanghai Mansion. We lived a 5-star experience (but didn't pay 5-star prices). Great service, stunning hotel decoration/ rooms, excellent breakfast buffet and (for us tourists) brilliant location in China Town. We will definitely come back when we are visiting Bangkok again.

My girlfriend and I decided to stay here in mid-Jan 2011 for 4 nights in the Mu Dan room which was on the offers page on the main website. First things first, the interiors and wonderful and testament to the amount of detail the owner has put into the place!

The room itself was kitted out with a great firm bed, not Sealy soft, just right, and a great bathroom which is a little less private due to no dividing walls, but charming nevertheless....great way to bond with the partner!

Service was impeccable, emails were replied to quite quickly, transfers were organized quite well, and the front staff we're helpful, even if the English wasn't the best.

One thing which I think wasn't the best was that the tours they offered there were a little less value for money, we went on one and it took forever to get to the location fora day tour, in a cramped mini-bus...maybe book with the tour company before arriving?

As for the smell, etc with complaints: if you do your research it's the middle of Chinatown...every chinatown has hawker stalls with food, so be prepared....my gf and I found it quite a relief to know it's an oasis from the real Bangkok, which you'd have to experience anyway

Having said that I can't really fault the mansion for that, since it's a great value hotel, good staff and a free mini-bar....and cool goldfish!

After our Phuket trip where we stayed in karon beach, we headed off to Bangkok. The hotel interior was amazing, furnitures are great and our suite room has HUGE tub too indeed was super wowed! The location isn't really the best though and hotel can't easily be found! Staff were helpful except for the guy in their reception who wasn't helpful nor friendly enough. Their porter however was opposite, very informative and helpful especially the afternoon guy. Chinese breakfast was glorious and were also impressed how the manager went out of her way when we required special diet for my partner who's allergic with dairy. She's bubbly and very funny! Will highly recommend this hotel to my family and friends!

Really enjoyed our stay there, it is right in the middle of China town, and it is so much fun, just walking out of the door, it is MANIC!!!, food, smells, tuk tuks, bustle! Really enjoyed it. My partner is a photographer and literally every corner had a story to tell. The breakfast was a mixture of uk/american to order, fresh continental, nice juices, fruits and yoghurts, and my favourite, Chinese - dim sum, ribs, rice and noodles, chicken, fish and soups, Soo good! The tours were good that were booked too, and were a little more reasonable than one's I had previously found on line, which I cancelled on arrival, and booked them through the hotel. I thought the hotel was quite reasonable, and had a great reception area and lobby with a little pond and lanterns above it. It also had a jazz bar attached which is where you have breakfast. Great place, and a great introduction to Bangkok. Thank you

This hotel is located within walking distance of a great number of things and Yaowarat itself is a great destination. The rooms are GORGEOUS! Loved the giant tub. Perfect place to start our honeymoon. The breakfast each morning was different and delicious.
