When I first saw the exterior of the building, it looked old/worn down. Inside the ground floor lobby, things were very bare, with new ceramic tile everywhere, and evidence of remodeling. The area around the elevators/reception showed even more signs of remodeling, with walls partially gone. These things had me really expecting the worst.

However, once you get past the lobby, the building is actually quite nice. The bottom 3 floors are various business. There is a large open lobby on what is actually the 2nd floor of the building, with grand staircases spiraling up to the third floor. All of this has been remodeled and is bright and fresh. There are rooms/apartments on floors 4-13 (labelled in the elevator as 1-10, since the first 3 are labelled G, M, and L).

While the building is older, the rooms are freshly painted and in good condition. They are large and airy, with tall ceilings. Bathrooms have been remodeled/re-tiled.

On the roof there is a nice pool and garden area. There is also a fitness center.

Transportation is very convenient as the building is 1/2 a block from Klong Thong Lor (Thong Lor pier-- for boat taxi's) and there are motorcycle taxi's directly across the street to take you to the nearest BTS (skytrain) station. There are also regular taxis passing by constantly.

Altogether, this is a very good value for the money especially if someone will be visiting Bangkok for a couple of months.

We have stayed at Union Tower as residents two times now - for 3 months in 2009 and 1 month in March this year and it has been a great home for us - although when we first saw the exterior we were a little dubious. Fortunately first impressions aren't always right! Though we haven't stayed as hotel guests we have to agree with the first reviewers comments who wrote a very accurate description with great suggestions. A couple updates - the rooftop pool is still sparkling and beautiful as always. The "Embassy Suites" style interior of the building (with rooms surrounding an open core) has been renovated and is quite nice. There is no longer an internet cafe in the building but Wifi can be purchased at an hourly or monthly rate. There are also several internet/ gaming rooms close by outside. The restaurant still has drinks, snacks and ice cream but now only serves ready to eat meals which can be ordered and heated up. The eating options outside on Phetburi street remain tremendous with many yummy food stalls and various options that change throughout the course of the day (and night.) Transportation either by khlong boat, catching the previously mentioned red shuttle bus to Shukumvit or motorcycle taxis remains easy. The Bangkok airport train runs directly behind Union Tower and it is a short 3-5 minute taxi/motorcycle ride to either the Makkasan station to catch the Express or the Ramkhamhaeng station to catch the city line. This is super convenient if not traveling with a lot of luggage.

Union Tower is located on 2355 New Petchburi Road near the intersection with Thong Lor Road. It is an older 10 story building in which the first 7 floors are rented to long-term residents (mostly young expatriates) and the top 3 floors are rented to short-term visitors. I stayed there for two and a half weeks in March of 2006 visiting my son who is one the aforementioned residents on the lower floors. My room rate was 650 Baht a night (about $16.25 USD). My "suite" consisted of a large living room area with a small refrigerator and ancient portable TV, a decent sized bedroom with plenty of closet space and a small balcony and a bathroom with tub and shower. The air conditioner was a little old and a little loud but it did a good job of keeping the rooms cool especially as my visit coincided with the Thai hot season. Temperatures averaged in the mid to upper 90s most days in March. My room was generally clean and comfortable, although the mattress was quite hard as seems to be the case in many Thai budget hotels. The rooms were cleaned and bed made each day and the refrigerator was restocked with two bottles of filtered water (a nice touch). There is beautiful rooftop pool which was clean and never crowded and many days I had it all to myself. I think the one major criticism I and some of my fellow travelers had was that rooms were dark. The interior lighting both in the rooms and in the public areas was kept on the dim side. The staff behind the desk as well as the housekeeping, laundry, maintenance and security personnel were always courteous and friendly although not all spoke English. There are two Internet cafes in the building. I preferred the one in the main lobby whose friendly proprietor spoke great English - cost to get online: 30 Baht/hour (about .75 cents USD). There is a family-run Thai restaurant in the lobby and you can get a really good meal with a couple of Singha beers for around $2.50-$4.00. The location near Thong Lor is actually pretty good. There is canal boat stop about 10 minutes away and just the other side of the canal is a shuttle bus that, for 6 Baht, will take you down Thong Lor to the Skytrain station on Sukhumvit Road. The air-conditioned Skytrain is a great way to get around the sprawling city of Bangkok.

In conclusion, the Union Tower is a decent alternative for the budget minded visitor to Bangkok. It is clean, comfortable with a friendly staff in a location convenient to public transportation. It is NOT suitable for the high-end traveler accustomed to the 4 and 5 star amenities found in the major international hotel chains. I would also caution visitors that New Petchburi Road is one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city and the traffic can be really congested during rush hours. Consequently, depending on which part of the city you are coming from, you may find that some taxi drivers may refuse to take you there during peak traffic times (this a very common and accepted experience in Bangkok). That's why the nearby public transport options available are a key feature here.

Note: In 2006 there is some major road construction taking place behind the building. Therefore, when checking in, I recommend that you ask for a room facing the front of the building.
