“An insight into real Bangkok living”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2013

I've stayed at the Baan Chantra twice and never been disappointed. The owner, Kulthilda, is a wonderful hostess and takes very good care of her guests. The house was her grandparents and she has taken great care to keep it in a traditional Thai style. The highlight of our last trip was giving alms to the Buddhist monks with Kulthilda at 5:45am. Under her instruction, advice, and translation, it was a real insight into the real Bangkok. For those looking for a unique stay, look no further.

We stayed in Ban Chantra in January 2013 for five nights. Kulthida was a warm and excellent hostess. When we told her of our liking for Thai food, she prepared breakfast dishes for us that we never had before. She gave freely of her time with information about Bangkok. The inn was well located, not too far from the Chao Phraya stop for boats going south to the main tourist areas. Immediately to the south is a tourist area with many restaurants, and to the north is an area of local life with impressive Wats on every other block. At Kulthida’s recommendation, we visited a local Wat, and were the only tourists attending the morning chanting. We stayed in two different rooms. The first one was somewhat dark, but adequate. The shower door did not work well, but they fixed it right away when we pointed it out. The second one was very nice, bigger, better equipped, and had a nice patio with it. However, it occasionally had a sewer odor. Both were away from the street noise. All in all, Kulthida makes this place worth recommending.

We stayed at the Baan Chantra for five nights at the end of Dec, 2012. We were met at the airport in the middle of the night by a driver the Baan Chantra owner had arranged for us. We had a larger and quieter room the first night and then moved into a smaller, still lovely, room closer to the street for the remainder of the time. Both rooms were comfortable, clean, and had AC. Every morning we were served a delicious Thai breakfast in the small dining room. The guest house's location in the Old City was perfect for us. We could walk to the river and catch a water taxi to different temples. Tuk tuks were near by to get to other parts of the old city. There were a lot of great street restaurants in the neighborhood that sprang to life at night. The Baan Chantra owner and staff were very kind, incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and went out of their way to make our time in Bangkok pleasant (which it was). We look forward to returning this year. We'll make our reservations as soon as we know our trip plans so that we have a larger choice of rooms.

Room Tip: Rooms off the street are a bit quieter.

Baan Chantra is the kind of place I like to stay. It is clean, bright and centrally located. The room had all the amenities that a traveler could want, a safe, refrigerator, and choice of delicious breakfast. Kulthida and her staff were friendly and always available to help. I will stay there again when I am in Bangkok.

Baan Chantra was a great place to stay! The owner, Kulthida, and her staff were very attentive and helpful as we developed our daily itineraries. The rooms were spacious and inviting - the free breakfast always filling. The location provided easy walking access to the major tourist destinations.

Proprietress Kulthida is warm, enthusiastic, very helpful and a great cook! The room was clean, attractive and roomy. Kulthida helped with reservations, directions and recommendations. Choice of substantial American breakfast or great Thai breakfast. Kulthida goes the extra mile to provide best service!

We spent three nights at Baan Chantra in early December. We stayed in the deluxe room in the back of the guest house, so we had no problems at all with noise. The room was spacious, with a Mac computer for our use while we were there. We did find that the wifi was spotty in our bedroom. The bathroom was clean, and we had our own shower, although there was no way we could find to control its temperature. Fortunately, the water temperature was reasonably warm - although after a hot day trekking about Bangkok, a cool shower might have been very refreshing. The beds were definitely on the firm side.
The breakfast room was nice and cheerful, with a view of Samsen road. The food was good, and served promptly. We had both the western and Thai options, and both were quite well prepared.
Staff were helpful in hiring taxis for us, which was very useful. It is the one problem with this location. While you can get to the major temples on foot, and the river is close, the shopping districts of Siam Square and Silom are inaccessible except by taxi, and many taxi drivers seemed unaware of addresses in that neighbourhood - and vice versa. Even armed with the address of the guest house written out in Thai, many taxi drivers seemed not to know how to get there.
Overall, a pleasant and relaxing place to stay.

Room Tip: If noise is a concern, ask for the room in the back. It's worth the extra money.
