“Disappointing”
Reviewed 1 September 2009

After reading all the positive reviews for Baan Chantra, we were disappointed that it did not live up to our expectations. The young man that was present on our arrival did not show any interest in the new guests and his indifference continued throughout our stay. In most places we have stayed in Thailand, we were always greeted with enthusiasm and warmth but unfortunately he lacked both. During our visit he appeared to be more intrested in watching whatever it was on the computer with headphones on, than answering any questions we had. It was a shame because all the other staff were helpful and very very nice. We has 2 rooms, one standard on the ground floor and one executive on the first floor. My room was on the ground floor and again was not what I was expecting. It was very basic and did not have any of the charm we had read about. Although there were windows, we were unable to open them as they backed onto the library. The bathroom was not particularly clean and smelt the whole of our time there. In Bangkok you cannot expect the same standards as in Europe, but the smell at times was awful and I am sure the staff must have been aware of it.
The deluxe room upstairs was better and after going up to the first floor we could understand why other guests found it quaint and charming. It was very pretty. The restroom in reception needed a thorough clean and the communal towel did not look like it had been changed in weeks.

We arrived the 5th of august in Baan Chantra en we were immediately suprised by the hospitaly. The service was excellent, at check in ( 06:00 AM, the owner got out of bed for us) we recieved coffee, warm towels and got offered a shower and the use of internet. Our room was very very nice, with a good shower, a hard bed and nice decoration. We stayed for 2 nights and we will be back again when we are in Bangkok. Go to Baan Chantra if you wanna feel instantly at home and want to enyoy a pleasant stay, and dont want anything missing before your big trip thru-out thailand.

Not much to add to the already glowing reviews of Baan Chantra except to say that from the moment you arrive you will be treated as very special guests. Kulthida and her staff's commitment to service and warm hospitality is visible throughout your stay. We left feeling like we made new friends.

We recently stayed for three nights in Baan Chantra and were very impressed. It is a family-run guesthouse located in the old city within walking distance of main attractions. The river is a short walk from the hotel. The atmosphere was homely and the place was clean. You leave your shoes at the bottom of the stairs to go to bedrooms on the first floor. The en-suite double-room we were in was spacious with a verandah overlooking the road which meant there was some traffic noise but the window was triple-glazed. The room facilities were of a high standard. There is free Internet access for guests. The staff were very helpful telling us the best way to get around and even got us a taxi with a meter. We would recommend this as a friendly place to stay in Bangkok.

My girlfriend & I stayed for 3 nights at the beginning of our travels in SE Asia, and found Baan Chantra a great base for exploring the city...
You're not too far from backpacker central, nor the Grand Palace, nor the river taxis, we were upgraded on arrival to a deluxe room with computeriser in the room, and found the staff to be very helpful with excellent English spoken. Particularly liked the manageress (?) flagging a taxi for us to the airport and negotiating a fair rate.
Breakfast was simple and tasty, served by the lovely security guard/waiter. OK it may not be the cheapest option out there, but you genuinely feel like you're perhaps staying as a guest of a Thai family rather than one of the generic tower-block hotels downtown..

Thank You Baan Chantra! We had a lovely time there and the quality of the rooms and service was excellent, personal and helpful. Book early as they have only a few rooms. We had two children under 3 and it worked very well for us.

We stayed in Baan Chantra for two nights after arriving in Bangkok. It was the perfect start for our holiday. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, the location is very convenient - the Grand Palace and main temples are in walking distance - and the rooms are clean and comfortable. We switched rooms after the first night though as the room on the first floor facing the street was quite noisy (especially when you're jet lagged) but the next night was perfectly fine. We would definitely stay there again on our next visit to Bangkok.
