I think Explorer333 (below) has it nailed. I stayed in Khao San Road on my return to Bangkok and compared with the Sukhumvit area I was dissapointed. There is lots of action around this part of Bangkok, plenty of bars and restaurants and its right next to the Skytrain which is cheap as chips.
Dave was a great host and I sadly missed out on beers with the guy this time round so look forward to a few when I'm next in Bangkok.
