The majority of my 150+ hotel reviews are fairly positive, since I try to give the benefit of the doubt to a hotel property, as long as the basics are met, And I will stick to that philosophy with this review. Legacy Suites is not a bad hotel, it just simply fails to even come close to meeting the "current" Trip Advisor rating of #38 out of 700+ Bangkok Hotels. In fact, it has fallen from #19 since I originally booked the hotel only 1 month ago, & I expect it will fall further in the rankings. The hotel would not rank #38 if there were only 150 hotels in Bangkok, let alone 700+. Those who have traveled to Bangkok, know that the city truly has some of the best hotels worldwide, & the quality & service bar only continues to go higher. So when I saw that Legacy Suites was ranked #19 in early 2013 I should have questioned the ranking. Nonetheless, I booked a "superior" studio for 3 nights on Travelocity, which I rarely use, since I do not put much faith in the site overall, but that is only my personal opinion. I noted on Trip Advisor that some prior guests suggested asking for rooms in the "new" tower, so I contacted the hotel to do likewise. What I got in response was an aggressive sales pitch to "upgrade" to the new tower for $30. However, since I had booked a "superior" room category, I questioned the need to do so. As such, I think I may have been penalized for declining the offer to "upgrade". I was assigned a room on the 6th floor of the old tower, & was apparently assigned the worst room: meaning next door to the elevator & directly across the hall from the housekeeping storage room, so the noise started early in the morning. Even then, I would not have objected, had the hotel come close to meeting the quality standards outlined & pointed to by many other reviewers. So let me cut to the chase with our room: I think many reviewers are impressed by the fact that the hotel offer "suite" accommodations, meaning they have a small kitchenette setup when you enter the room including a microwave & refrigerator; a small sitting area with a coffee table, loveseat & table with 2 chairs, & then the sleeping area. Unfortunately, this in & of itself is nothing special in today's hotel market, & certainly not in Bangkok.
The walls in the room were heavily banged & worn; I congratulate the hotel for removing carpeting & having natural floor throughout the room/bath, but the area rug was so dirty that we would not put our bare feet on it; the carpet in front of the elevators were equally as dirty; the furniture was very worn & banged up; even though it had a kitchenette area, there were no paper towels or napkins or towels; stayed for 3 nights & only 1 roll of TP (guess if you run out they expect you to call the front desk for a replacement roll); drapes were torn & hanging loose on one side; absolutely NO hooks in the bathroom to hang anything; the upholstered headboard on the bed was so disgusting & worn & who-knows-what, that we did not want to touch it.
However, there was even a worse issue: in the closet there was a small "totally exposed" electrical switch, that looked like a handyman had installed it, to turn on a light when the closet door was opened & turn it off when the door was closed, but it was a totally live switch just hooked to the side of the closet wall; something like this could actually harm, hurt or worse, a guest if they actually touched it. Have not seen something like this outside a very 3rd world property, & certainly NEVER in a city such as Bangkok, in a hotel with a 3 star rating. On our last night I went to the front desk to ask about printing airline boarding passes, & was told that the hotel "does not have a printer" hooked to the guest computers, so it was not possible. Really? A 3 star hotel & they have no ability for a guest to print a boarding pass? They referred me to an internet service 2 blocks from the hotel. Breakfast was included in our room daily, but even it was lackluster. Very pleasant & helpful staff, so the issue, again, is poor management. Breakfast is served from 6:30-10A daily, & we entered each day about 8:30, & each of the 3 days it was identical: were these the same 3 pastries that we saw on the prior 2 days? It is as if they fill the breakfast options at 6:30 & then let the dwindle until they are gone. No service problems from the employees, but a management issue. Same with the front desk staff. They could not be nicer & more welcoming, but they have zero input over how the place is run, & have NO power to take responsibility for an issue & see that it is resolved. The hotel has a small, but quite pleasant pool & gym area, & I can only think that the "new" tower accommodations are so far to the "old" tower accommodations, that there is no comparisons. However, if our "superior" suite is any indication, you are best to look elsewhere. There are dozens & dozens & dozens of similar 3 star properties all over Bangkok, with excellent accommodations, so don't get carried away by a Trip Advisor rating & expect more than a place can provide. Once again, "not" a bad place, but just not close to the ratings. As such, will not return on the next Bangkok visit.
