Ok I arrived in Bangkok on Wednesday 14th and I'd been looking for longer term/cheaper accommodation than my perfectly nice hotel has to offer. I called the House by the Pond after reading an ad in the Bangkok Post.
"We have several rooms available, sir" the receptionist trilled over the phone. "Come any time to see", so off I went to do just that.
Upon arrival after an arduous trek down Sukhumvit 22 with its already narrow pavements blocked by kids from the nearby school, the receptionist proceeded to tell me after realising I'm of Afro-Caribbean descent "Sorry sir, we are fully booked".
"That's not what you told me on the phone", I replied. After asking me "where I was from" [London] and "which country" (??!!), the uppity office manager proceeded to show me a dank, dark flat with knackered furniture and a bathroom with a dead cockroach in it.
I explained to the office manager she ought to be ashamed and that it wouldn't take long before her business got the reputation it deserved because the internet is a very, very powerful tool. I know some folk will say I'm being over-sensitive but I don't think this could've been any less subtle . . .More
