I stayed in Banilah for 1 month and it was just perfect! The place, the girls at Banilah are awsome, very friendly, always free to help you. The room are nice, simple, clean with WIFI and daily little home made soap, mineral water.. ! You feel like home in Banilah Cafe, the common living room, where you can drink delicious coffee !! I highly recommand this place to any traveller.
Hope to come back soon to see you girls again:)

We stayed at the Banilah for 4 nights while in Chiang Mai. The rooms are simple but do the trick (there is so much to see in Chiang Mai you don't spend a lot of time in your room to begin with!) The staff were extremely helpful and attentive, even sitting down with us and mapping out their favourite places in the city as well as the main city attractions. We ate at a few of the recommended restaurants and were not disapointed. The location of the hotel is a bit "hidden" and we had to show many of the tuk tuk drivers how to get there on the map but overall we were very pleased with our stay and would recommend Banilah to anyone visitng Chiang Mai.

The lodging is simple, clean and most notably, the staffs were all so friendly and helpful.

The heartwarming incident came when both me and my friend were looking for laundry service around the area only to find out that there are some kind of water rationing/restriction on that particular day. We gave up and left our dirty clothes back in the room, complaining to the staffs we are unable to get the laundry service we wanted.

When we got back at the end of the day, we found out that our clothes were cleaned and was left nicely folded on the table (of course with a note stating the cost of the laundry, which was very much affordable). I thought that was really nice of them as we were rather desperate to do our laundry.

Miss Chiang Mai much as well as the staffs and cats in the cafe :)

Just came back from Chiangmai, stayed in Banilah for 5 nights. Love the place and the people there so much. The manager, Ob is a great lady, who showed us a detail map and tell us where to go, how to save money on the trip, which cafe or restaurant is good and so on... and we had good chats everyday!
The guesthouse doens't serve breakfast, but they sell very good coffee. You can bring your own food and enjoy their coffee at the lobby. Don't have to worry about food, a local market and some small restaurants are just 5-10 mins walking distance. What I love about this location is it is not too far away from "Old city" yet it is not a foreigner place. You can't find much foreigner bars and restaurants nearby, but mostly local market and shops.
The room itself is good as it only cost about USD15 for an air-conditioned room with private bathroom. But it will be good if you bring your own little thermo flask with you as you can't boil hot water in the room, but you can get free hot water from the lobby. Also, bring your own hair dryer as well. They will give you one lovely handmade soap everyday, which smells really good. I bring home some as a souvenir.
They have plenty of cats walking around, but it won't bother you much as they normally sleep at a corner, so those who are afraid of cats no need to worry.

Cat-lovers would definitely like this guesthouse cos there are cats everywhere-real cats, stone cats, wooden cats...on the tables, by the pond, under the trees etc. They are like playing hide-and-seek with the guests here.

Pay only 500 baht a night, you get:
-an air-conditioned/fan room with private bath
-a cable TV
-a comfy bed
-free & fast wifi internet access
-two free big bottles of drinking water
-a little handmade Ylang-Ylang soaps
-free use of computers in the lobby
-personalized service by the staffs

Cheap & delicious chicken rice restaurant is just around the corner. For breakfast, the Na Na Coffee Corner nearby will be a great choice, especially for coffee, croissant & muffin lovers.

Local market, 7-11, mini marts, pubs, massage, beef noodle & spicy noodle shops & stalls, night food market are all within walking distance.

However you will have to get a tuk-tuk or song thaew to go to the old city, night bazaar & the famous Nimmanhaemin Road and Charoenrat Road. The fare is around 60-80 baht.

Conclusion: Banilah, a cozy place to stay in.

Stayed here for 5 nights in mid august and found it to be great apart from a couple of key things that let it down...

There are a number of good things about Banilah...firstly the staff. Much like other reviewers have mentioned we were sat down on arrival for about 20 mins by one of the girls who runs the place and given a number of maps of the immediate and wider area and loads of helpful advice on places to eat and things to see/do. They were also happy to help arrange days out - we did flight of the gibbon and a cooking course - and tuk tuks into the centre of Chiang Mai. The guesthouse itself is nicely decorated and pleasant to be around (and very reasonable at 500b a night) save for a couple of things...

Firstly the location. Basically there are no restaurants in reasonable walking distance. There is a tesco lotus just round the corner and food being sold on the street nearby but nowhere to relax and have a meal. You need to take a tuk tuk into town which will cost about 60-100b. Obviously this isnt going to break the bank but it adds up and could be spent on a more expensive guest house by Thapae Gate or the river where there are loads of places to eat/drink. The only other problem is the bathroom. It is a pretty standard bathroom for the price range except for the fact that it is outside. You have to step out onto your tiny balcony to access it. Not a problem most of the time but not great after nightfall and when the mosquitos are out in force. Might not be an issue to alot of people but made me and my other half a little uncomfortable.

If a few tuk tuk rides a day and the bathroom situation dont bother you then I would wholeheartedly recommend Banilah but if i were to return to Chiang Mai id stay more centrally.
