What a great little boutique type hotel...right in the centre of the old town with great restaurants just across the road and within walking distance of night/day markets - we got a tuk-tuk there for 100bht and walked back (about 15minute slow walk). Staff were very helpful, our bed was sooo comfortable, the room was I think, a bit bigger than the ones along the corrider (we were at the end of the corrider), we had all the comforts plus a balcony with a fan for sitting reading etc. Our room was really quite big so the others would be more than ample. Everything about the place was lovely. The spa girls great...had the best facial and face massage ever! The only thing I would have liked, was for the staff to tell us about the fantastic 700yr old pergoda in a huge area behind the shops across the road. I walked down the little lane across from the breakfast room as I had seen lots of monks and other people coming from the lane and then wow! this huge area with the highest pergoda in Thailand there with all sorts of Buddhist buildings surrounding it, including a history museum.
Would recommend this hotel and we are quite fussy.
Thanks to the staff for all of their help organising drivers, places to go etc.

Positives:
- Staff was incredibly nice...helped us out with booking day excursions and tickets to the thai boxing...had good food recommendations, etc.
- Many of the rooms on the bottom floor face the pool and you basically have a little private area of the pool
- Breakfast was good and they deliver it to your room if you wish
- Great location in the old city...we walked to every sight

Nothing negative to say about the place...I highly recommend it

We stayed here on the first stop on our trip and it was a nice surprise especially after 20 hrs of traveling. We did minimal research on this hotel as it was by recommendation of our trail finders representative. Stepping in off the busy street was a pleasant surprise to come into a cool calm interior.

Yes the first thing they do is ask which soap you would like, it's cheesy but also nice.... although we were jet lagged so also slightly delirious. The check-in was quick, friendly and no nonsense and we were quickly hosted up to our room with luggage following 10mins later.

Room was with all the modern luxurys eg. LCD tv, monsoon shower,and with a Thai decor. The things that really stood out were the following;
1. bed sheets (very high thred count and super soft),
2. bathroom towels smelt great and were very soft (unusual for hotels as they're often stiff and scratchy),
3. music system with preloaded apple iPod
4. Very calming overall and comfortable (balcony view over centre courtyard with pool and trees)
5. Breakfast - tasty quick and a good variety especially for a small boutique hotel
6. Most of all our favourite item was the staff who were very friendly, helpful, welcoming, genuine and the epitome of Asia grace!! On several occasions we were welcomed by our name from various members of staff and they couldn't do enough for you!

We also used the gym everyday which was basic but good enough for the main bits. The room is a little short of storage space but not a show stopper. In regards to location we found it to be great! The Sunday market meant we were able just step out, for all the other markets, shopping and sight seeing everything was just a short walk or tuc tuc.

Things we think would make it even better (not being picky but everyone wants to know what they could do better);
1. More gym equiptment (more; 1x cross trainer, 1x exercise bike, 1x rowing machine)
2. Cold towel on arrival
3. A bag rack in room to put another suitcase onto.

It's not a resort, its not a large luxury hotel, it's grounds are pleasant in size and well maintained, but most of it quietly understated and just boutique!

Overall a strong recommendation for city culture and fun!

We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights, 2 adults and 2 young children. The hotel is perfectly located in the centre of the old town, walking distance to many sites, restaurants etc. Tuk tuk always easy to find in front of hotel.
We stayed in a large deluxe room with extra bed. iPod with preloaded music, bath, shower, balcony, safe deposit box etc.
Breakfast is included, and they have a buffet plus large menu cooked to order. Delicious, best breakfast we had in our 3 weeks travel.
The hotel is very clean, the pool great, the staff really friendly and caring. They were very helpful and genuinely interested in us. Free Wifi in the hotel. Gym, library, spa services.
If you stay at U, make sure it is on a weekend, as the Sunday walking street (streets gets shut to traffic, local stalls get set up with handcraft, food etc) is just outside the hotel. Once you are tired from walking around, have a drink in the U bar upstairs in the hotel overlooking the market. Great fun and good drinks.
If we return to Chiang Mai, we will definitely stay again at U!

Room Tip: Some ground floor rooms around the pool have direct access to pool. Fun!

U Chiang Mai was the best. It undeniably excels on all fronts. Most of all were the genuine smiles and warmth we were treated with at all times by everyone. This made the stay extra special and certainly pushes this hotel into being probably the best we've stayed in. The hotel is beautifully designed. The rooms were superb and we were lucky enough to have a ground floor room with direct access to the pool. Breakfast was excellent. Booking activities was easy through the front desk at the same price as elsewhere. The location is superb- in the heart of the old town and only a short tuk tuk trip to anywhere else. We would love to come back in the future and cannot recommend it highly enough.

This hotel is an oasis in the middle of a vibrant street, where shops and restaurants are plentiful and a tuk tuk or other transportation is always available. If you're lucky enough to be there on the weekend (which we weren't), the famous night market is right outside the hotel. The staff is polite and friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable, and the common areas of the hotel are beautiful and peaceful. Our room was large with a comfortable bed, good linens, and two separate closet areas. The bathroom was also large and had a separate shower and tub--and their soap is special, to say the least. The breakfast was very good, and offered a choice of freshly-prepared entrees, including a couple different egg preparations and a Southeast Asian porridge, congee, and lots of beautifully presented fresh cut fruit.

On the negative side, the rooms were painted a milk-chocolatey brown, which made them dark. Even the bright lights in the bathroom weren't enough to make shaving or putting on makeup an easy process. We also had problems with the internet--it was intermittently so slow that we could not use it. We even switched rooms (from a more isolated one to one more centrally located) and didn't notice much improvement. There is wi-fi in the hotel's common areas, so we usually took advantage of those inviting areas to access email.

I would definitely chose to stay here again, as the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Room Tip: They have room from which you can access a semi-private pool (separate from the main pool). Unless...

Dear Conairaa,

May I start by thanking you for taking the time to comment on your stay at U Chiang Mai. Your feedback is essential in ensuring that we continue to offer the best standards of service available. I was delighted to learn that you found our property beautiful and peaceful and that your room, amenities and breakfast were also to your liking as we are extremely proud on what U Chiang Mai has to offer our discerning guests.

Due to your valuable information we have located a troublesome Wi-Fi router in the vicinity of the room you stayed in which has already been replaced by our Engineering Department. We will also consider adding more lighting in the bathroom during our next renovation for the comfort and convenience of the guests. Thank you for bringing these to our attention and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.

May I end by saying it was an absolute pleasure serving you as our honored guest and we look forward to seeing you again on your next visit to Chiang Mai.
