“Reasonably nice place, but problems sleeping here”
Reviewed 18 January 2014

We recently stayed at U Chiang Mai for four nights.

Plusses:

- Very friendly and responsive staff
- Pretty good restaurant for lunch and dinner
- Attractive rooms
- Super clean
- Great location, right in the center of the old city

Minuses:

- Breakfast was a little on the boring side and just OK
- No elevator, not normally a problem but one of us was sick during our stay and climbing two flights of steps every time we came and left our room was difficult
- The bed was uncomfortable, with a very thick mattress pad that seemed to get warmer as the night went on
- The air conditioning was extremely noisy
- The air conditioning did not keep the room cool enough at night

I did not get a good night's sleep for four nights. I'm on the picky side when it comes to comfortable climate control but I don't usually have this problem at other hotels.

The staff is wonderful, and the hotel is beautiful and well-located. We so wanted to love this place but in the end the minuses outweighed the plusses. Given the price to stay here, I think we would have done better elsewhere.

Room Tip: If you don't want to climb stairs to get to your room, request a room on the bottom floor. No el...

Dear ashlandfan

Greetings from U Chiang Mai

I was delighted to read you review and your references to the aspects of your stay that you enjoyed. It is always a pleasure to read compliments regarding the U team and I will pass on your praise personally.
It was disappointing to learn that you did not have a good night’s sleep due to some issues with your room and I must sincerely apologize for these. Whenever I read negative comments on Trip Advisor mentioning specific problems I immediately conduct an investigation with my team to see what action was possibly taken.
Unfortunately despite you staying with us for four nights and upon your own admission that you are picky when it comes to climate control and you do not have this problem with other hotels we have no reference to any complaints about your room either during your stay or upon check-out. We are entirely dedicated to your satisfaction and well-being and, upon receiving a complaint, will do our utmost to rectify any situation. Regrettably if we are not aware that a guest is experiencing issues then I am sure you kindly appreciate that we cannot attend to them. If either myself or my team were informed that you were not satisfied with your room then, as in all cases of this nature, we would have immediately moved you to another.
May I end by politely saying that we implore all our guests, if they experience any issues whatsoever, to inform us at the time when something could actually be done regarding the matter. Your complete satisfaction and our attempts to be of service in any way possible go a long way in justifying our current ranking on Trip Advisor and ensuring both an enjoyable and memorable time with us.

Best Regards,
Itthipon Meesawat

Im really pleased we booked this hotel, its the first time we've stayed somewhere smaller and it is a lot more personal. The rooms are beautifully decorated, the staff very friendly and helpful (the preloaded ipod is a nice touch along with the personalised soaps etc) breakfast was delicious and the hotel is perfectly located. I would recommend people stay here.

Really enjoyed our 4 nights here. You get to choose your soap, loaded i pods, massive showers, kimonos, fruit every day and delightful rooms all in a perfect location. Pool are is great although if busy I don't think there would be enough sun loungers. Staff lovely and very friendly.
Breakfast served at anytime, anywhere and our only gripe would be that it wasn't very hot if you had it in your room. Would definitely stay here again.

The moment that we walked into the U Chiang Mai we were made to feel at home immediately by the very friendly and professional staff and this remained throughout our stay.
The location of the hotel is right at the centre of Chiang Mai so was straightforward to plan our time there. Breakfast was good, cocktails in the rooftop bar resonably priced and thai massage in the spa is recommended. Although the treatments are slightly more expensive than in a nearbly spa the convenience of wandering there in your hotel robe and slippers more than makes up for it!
For such a central location the rooms are set back far from the road so there is no noise and the rooms themselves are clean and modern with comfortable bed, ipod dock and wet room.

If you are looking for a place to stay for a few days in Chiang Mai and you'd like to be right in the centre of things; this is the place to stay! Especially if you also enjoy a boutique hotel with a cosy-feel. This hotel is situated in the middle of the main street of the old centre- with for example the sunday-night-market, which is fun for some shopping, great food and a good vibe. The staff is very helpfull; we stayed in a top-floor-room (like we asked for). The room was not large but very homy; the bathroom was quite large, great shower but the towels could do with an update, don't expect to find a lot of wardrobe-space (we just left some stuff in the suitcases). If you don't like stairs - ask for a room on the ground floor, we had to walk all the way up to the 4th, there are no lifts.
U Hotel really has an eye for detail, compliments! The breakfast was very good actually, we could even order 'á-la-carte' with again very friendly staff. The pool is a nice addition although there are only a few poolbeds- we didn't mind. All in all we had a great stay here and I would recommend this hotel for sure instead of the more well-known hotels on the outskirts. If you are looking for some action outside; we loved the biking tour 'Colors of Chiang Mai'!

Room Tip: Don't like stairs? Ask for a ground-floor-room. Higher floor-rooms have a bit of a view and tend...

U Chiang Mai was a great experience.

We stayed for four nights during peak season - Dec 26-30, 2013. The staff were great - you wouldn't have guessed it was peak season, they were attentive and the place was never too saturated with people. We were there for our honeymoon, and of all the places we stayed this was the only hotel to remember it was our honeymoon - our room was decorated with rose petals on the bed upon our arrival <3

The room (Deluxe Room) was well designed, spacious and nice. The toiletries provided were ok, the private balcony was nice, and it included complimentary glass bottles of water in your room which was a nice touch.

The complimentary breakfast every day was amazing - you could order it to any part of the hotel at any time of day. We enjoyed it in our room everyday and tried almost everything - and it was all great. The hotel also offers free bicycle rentals, fresh fruit in your room every day, as well as a pool and gym.

The location is great - it's a contemporary retreat tucked in the old city's walls. It's a short walk to all the sights, sounds, and eats. The Sunday market happens right outside the hotel door, it's really a part of all the action.

Would recommend staying here.

Delighted with my stay. Staff are very kind and efficient. Really think it was the ideal hotel location wise. Ate breakfast at the hotel and a couple of meals. Would not hesitate to return. Bed was so comfortable and the room in general was cleaned to a very high standard.
if I only had to pick one negative it would be that I thought there could do with being a bit more choice on the menu

Room Tip: Loved that each room had a balcony or terrace. The day beds are divine
