We live in Phuket and visited Chiang Mai for a 4 day break. Right from booking the hotel to our entire stay everything was perfect. Khun Suchada the general manager is amazingly delightful and goes that extra mile to make sure you feel like your in your own home and she is backed by an amazing set of young, energetic and always smiling team members for whom nothing is too much. The hotel itself is such a refreshing change to the usual chain hotels, very trendy with lovely rooms and great pools. We had one with direct pool access which made the stay more special. The location of the hotel is fantastic as it is in the old walled city which has a very local and artistic feel to it away from the more touristy areas. On Sundays the street just outside turns into a fantastic market offering great shopping and yummy food. The U is a short Tuk Tuk ride from the Riverside and the daily Night Plaza, or you could even walk there. Chiang Mai on the whole is such a lovely city with so many great sites to visit, restaurants serving delicious food and wonderful local people. We called upon Khun Lucky, the taxi driver mentioned earlier by another traveler and he turned out to be the best way to see Chiang Mai, his English is perfect and he is so knowledgeable and friendly and he also took us to a very local but traditional restaurant for lunch.
We will definitely visit CM again and without a doubt stay at the U.

I like U Chiang Mai, this is a new breed of boutique hotels catered to the 21st century discerning travelers. The hotel is located in the old city, tucked away from the bustling night bazaar but on weekends, the road in front of the hotel turns into a weekend ‘walking street’. You can find Lanna styled antiques and handicrafts, wood carving, northern Thailand home industry products and souvenirs. If you are staying over the weekend, this is ‘the’ place to stay. During weekday, due to its central location, you can reach most places within 10 minutes taxi ride (airport, Central Airport Plaza, Night Bazaar …).
The breakfast is served at the restaurant. You can also order room service since they do have whenever/wherever service policy. Unless you wish to have breakfast on the day bed at the balcony in the comfort of your room, there rarely any other place for you to dine inside the hotel room.
The breakfast served at the restaurant is by a la carte for the main item, but there is a buffet spread serving toast/bread/cereal/salads/fruits. Nothing extravagant, but it is adequate for a small boutique hotel like this.
I find the spa is a little over-priced. The price should be much lower ensuring it is affordable enough to allow the spa goers to take this as their daily ritual.
The room is very well decorated given that kind of price you pay. You have almost everything you need. My only advise to the hotel is if they are able to place a small side table in the bathroom , there are space constraint for my girlfriend to place her toiletries.
In short, my verdict for this hotel is really value for money, unique and it is one of its kind in Chiang Mai.

My stay at the U Hotel Chiang Mai was pleasant; exactly what I expected it to be. Truly, U Hotel Chiang Mai it is a ‘hidden jewel’ in the old city of Chiang Mai. Contemporary design, unpretentious, excellent value for money without having you paid the exorbitant price. The dark-coloured tiles rectangular swimming pool is cool, contrasting the purplish towel and sun deck, clearly exuding the U Hotel brand identity.
Though most of the rooms are of standard size, but it is power-packed with amenities such as iPod docking , rain-shower, complimentary WIFI just to name a few.
The huge balcony with day-bed is a place to unwind, overlooking the swimming pool and water features and gardens. Some of the rooms at ground level have direct access to the lap pool, you may need to pay a little more to get those units but it is worthwhile.
I was there on business, very rare as most of the guests are on holiday. The hotel is more ‘leisure’ geared as opposed to ‘business’ oriented. There is no writing desk in the room; I have to be creative how I could continue to work without having to sprain my back.
There are lots of big mozzies not only in the hotel but in Chiang Mai, I guessed when the weather is hot, it is also their breeding seasons. I wish they could offer battery operated mosquitoes bat in each of their rooms.
The 24 hours check-in/check-out is a nice touch especially if you are arriving early. There is a big gym considered this is just a small boutique hotel. They do have some bikes for their guest to use.
Overall, a well rated hotel, and worth check it out if you are in Chiang Mai.

We stayed here for 4 nights: me, wife and 5 yo boy.
The hotel is really nice and the staff was very very friendly.
The rooms are very clean and they offer free internet. The morning breakfast was delicious.
The hotel is in the old town, which is away from all of the huss and fuss of the hotel area. At this hotel, you are really close to most of the best temples. Right across the street are a couple of restaurants that serve really good food. We liked the "writer restaurant", but the one right next door was equally delicious.

It is easy to take a tuk tuk to the night market (only about 60 baht).

Our typical day was:
Enjoy breakfast
Visit some temples
Go to lunch
Back to the hotel for a swim and a some quiet time
Happy hour across the street
Tuk tuk to the night market area for dinner and shopping
Back home by tuk tuk

The temple on the mountain is worth the trip. The zoo was also good.

We stayed at U Chiang Mia Hotel for 4 nights and could not have been more appreciative for the service we received. The staff went beyond our expectations that we have received at ANY other hotel, throughout any of our travels.
Organising and advising places of interest for us to go and see, even to the extent of arranging for us to secure a personal Driver/Guide who was reasonably priced, and to the point of also going out of his way to make our stay a memorable one for us. At this point, I feel I should add his contact phone number which is:
Mister Lucky @ 081-2876017. You won't regret using his services.
The night markets of a weekend were an added experience, right outside the hotel. Take a tip and go between 5 & 7 pm, any time after this and I would suggest they are too crowded to enjoy, with the exception of the bargins to be found there.
Food wise: You won't go wrong if you eat at: - Rachadamneon Kitchen or The Writers Club, directly across the street from the hotel.
We will without any doubt, STAY at the U Chiang Mia Hotel again on our next visit.

We spent 6 nights at U Chiang Mai in March as a follow on to my annual golf trip with other friends, as a base to explore Chiang Mai and the surrounding countryside. From start to finish the U Chiang Mai and all the staff lived up to expectations and the good reviews we had read.
We had requested direct pool access and sure enough, we were allocated one of two rooms with steps off the veranda in to a small swimming pool (appx 15m x 4m); our 7 year old son loved it! Furnishings were of a high standard but watch your toes on the bed frame!
Staff could not be more helpful or friendly and they were falling over each other to help when we had problems with our flights out of Chiang Mai.
It should be obvious to anyone looking at the U Chiang Mai website that as this small hotel is 3-4 stories tall and built directly round the main pool, there are going to be issues with sunbathing.
We didn't opt for breakfast in our room having read some of the comments about the lack of a table but the restaurant breakfast was very good; OK, you didn't get the choice you would in a 200 bed resort hotel but you can't expect that in a 41 room boutique establishment! Eggs benedict, fresh croissants and fantastic lattes worked for me!
my wife and I made use of the gym and the whole family headed out on the complimentary mountain bikes one morning - a bit scary in the traffic but good fun.
As other reviewers have commented, this hotel is not in the busy part of town but it is just a sone's throw from the two biggest temples in Chiang Mai and everything other than the riverside restaurants is within easy walking distance. The Sunday "walking street" on the doorstep is great fun and concentrates on real handicrafts rather than the knock offs found at the Night Bazaar.
Only two negatives: 1. Spa is much too expensive (I would have loved to give it our business but when treatments 50 yards away are 1/4 the price it is a no brainer). 2. The restaurant has a very limited menu, all of it Asian and as our son is a bit wary of non European food we had to eat elsewhere. The flip side is that the room service menu is great and varied and we used it a few times.
