“Faultless service”
Reviewed 18 April 2011

A small and very clean hotel/guest house situated just a 5 minute stroll to the night market and 10-15 minutes from the old town. We had a room to the rear of the property, no window but very quiet. The room itself was spacious and very clean. Mr Kem and his wife Kat are very pleasant and take genuine pleasure in helping you. Mr Kem went out of his way to help organise flights to Laos for us and even managed to get a small discount off an already agreed lowest quote at a nearby agent. The staff were all friendly and polite. Free internet access on a public computer was very useful. Breakfast, self service and adequate.

Stayed there for the second time in February (previous was 2 years before) and nothing has changed. Spotless little guesthouse with amazing hosts. Kem and Kat and staff go out of their way to make sure you are happy. 2 minutes walk to night market and 15 minutes to "old town". Adequate light breakfast which you prepare yourself and free internet. My only tip would be to take the rooms to the rear of the guesthouse as they are a lot quieter although they have no windows. All rooms are very spacious. The front rooms (with windows) can be noisy due to the nearby nightclubs.

We stayed at Vanilla Place Guest House in Chiang Mai for 4-5 nights. Mr.Kem was extraordinarily helpful, his staff were pleasant, helpful and overall just lovely people. Our room was plain (nothing too fancy) but spotlessly clean and comfortable. When I found the bed a bit too hard (lots of hotels in Thailand have hard mattresses), they immediately offered to bring up a softer mattress to add to the top, which made a big difference.
Overall, it was their willingness to help and their kindness that made this place a standout. I really appreciated that when we checked in Mr. Kem said that he wanted us to feel like his guest house was our home while we were visiting. When I had some tummy sickness during our stay, he even brought me a Thai herbal tincture to try and help me feel better. All those little extras make a huge difference when you're travelling somewhere so far from home.
Having the internet terminal available for use was an added plus.
The only small thing I would suggest is that when my husband and I wanted to rent bicycles to tool around the city, the staff at Vanilla Place were extremely helpful and contacted a local company who drove over 2 bikes in the back of a truck in about 15 minutes time...however, the bikes we got were very old (one had no brakes), rickety and made riding in the city even more dangerous (if that's possible!) than if they had been in good working order. Perhaps Vanilla Place could use or recommend a different company for others looking for bicycles. (That said, we never mentioned this to Mr.Kem but I'm sure if we had, he would have taken our advice to heart)
Thank you for a wonderful stay!!!

Vanilla place is an admirable place to stay. The rooms are simple but very nice, comfortable and clean.
The owners Kem and Kat are very welcoming. Whenever we needed they have always been friendly and helpful in organising our day trips as well as buying tickets. They assisted us with any question we might have, even to look for a delicious restaurant nearby.
Ting, the driver of the guesthouse, picked us up at the train station as promised.
The location is good, just some minutes walk away from the night market and the old town.
Internet was for free. WiFi wasn’t working in our room, but there is a pc for the guests, with internet for free.
Tanks again to Kem and his wife for making our stay so lovely and for the souvenir upon departure: a sweet vanilla candle.

I found this place accidentally on the internet. There were so much compliments and I thought I would have to prove it. The first step i walked inside I was greeted very warmly by Khun Kem, the owner, who also took me to my room which is nice and clean and amazingly quiet and peaceful. The internet works well. And I enjoyed the sleep tremendously. When I want to go some place for eating or for visiting, Khun Kem, summoned his contact with the small bus and we went on our way. The driver was polite and obliging. The price was right too. I enjoyed my stay very much. You owe it to yourself to prove how nice the peaceful the place is. Enjoy!

The hotel rooms were nice and clean, but nothing special. The karaoke bar on the other side of street was pretty noisy.
The price was extremely high compared to the hotels in the center. Hotels in the center go for around 500-700 bht, while here you pay 900-1100 for a room.

Although the rooms are very modest, they are mostly clean (not spotless - some minor stains - but not those of dried blood - on the bedsheets) and it encourages you to get out and explore Chiang Mai until the AM hours of the day. It can be a bit of a walk to the night markets but once we became familiar with where we were (after getting lost quite a bit), the walk wasn't too bad, and the tuk-tuks were cheap too.

Service is excellent - Mr Kem & his wife & daughter could not have helped us more. Always with a smile, he organised day tours for us the night before (and at a GREAT price). He had great recommendations on what to do, and provided us with a map with directions to each market. The atmo in the upstairs lounge room is so nice - it is so good to relax with some coffee and toast in the morning. Huge TV to watch movies, sound surround system, common computer with fast net.

Value is fantastic for what we get. At the end of our 3 nights there, Mr Kem gave us vanilla scented candles, which was such a nice gesture. Will definitely stay here again on our next visit!
