“Excellent Service, Exceptional Hosts”
Reviewed 23 August 2009

Sometimes in your travels, you get lucky. You meet incredible people who are genuine and honest. I met such people on my Chiang Mai trip…Mr. and Mrs. Kem. But this review is about hotels so I’ll try to focus. After reading all the nice reviews on Tripadvisor, we decided to book at Vanilla Place. And we weren’t disappointed.

We had stayed at an expensive beach resort in Phuket and hotel in Bangkok but we didn’t get as much attention and service there as we got at Vanilla Place.

Owner/Manager, Mr. Kem was always around to answer any question we had about what to do, where to go, where to get a good deal, where to avoid overrated, over expensive places, how much a typical tuk-tuk ride would cost to a destination so we wouldn’t get gouged. Imagine, a hotel owner who is recommending places where I SAVED money.

Note: the hotel is 5-stories, no elevator, so if walking up the stairs is not comfortable for you, be sure to ask for a lower room. Some rooms don’t have a window. So be sure to ask for one if that bothers you. Anyways, Chiang Mai is such a wonderful place, you really shouldn’t be hanging around your room too much.

Vanilla Place is conveniently located--walking distance to the Night Bazaar, Anusan Food Market (lots of restaurants to choose from), there is even an indoor food court nearby, Antique House Restaurant (unique). Remember, this is a budget hotel but the rooms at Vanilla Place are comfortable, clean, well-kept, no-frills. The 5-star service from Mr. and Mrs. Kem…well, we got that for free.

Vanilla Place Guest House was exactly what I was looking for as a solo woman traveler who had been on the road for a while. The hosts were so accommodating and helpful, I really felt relaxed and at home. This is not a place you'll want to stay at if you don't to be fussed over by two doting Asian parents. My room didn't have windows, which was actually fine by me. Otherwise, the rooms are spotless. Breakfast is a modest toast and fruit and instant coffee.

Having read all the previous glowing reviews with great interest, I was convinced that Vanilla Guest House was going to be a suitable home for three nights for myself and 5 travelling companions. With such high scores there is always pressure that something will not live up to the hype but it resoundingly did.

Mr Kem and his wife welcome you from the moment you arrive with open arms and will watch you go off into the distance as you leave. They are more like travel agents, hotel managers and parents rolled into one. Everything we wanted to do in Chiang Mai they arranged for us with the best companies they new of and, crucially, at discount prices. We would have felt bad in fact depending on them so much to organise everything but for the extreme willingness and kindness they displayed which suggested no request was too much to ask of them. To some they may seem a little too hands on, for example ringing you for breakfast, reminding you to take your free water but ultimately this is all because they care that you have the best stay possible.

This guest house is of course still a relatively budget option but for what you pay it is probably far better value than any 5 star joint. Take the little touches such as pouring you water when you return from an exhausting day trip. Or the free use of internet in the hotel lobby - a basic need which most hotels will charge you an extortionate fee to utilise.

If you can get a room away from the front road which can be noisy but what do you expect in a city and it is worth it to take advantage of the great location. 5 mins walk to the Night Bazaar - in our experience some of the best value tourist shopping to be had in Thailand.

There is nothing more for me to say as you must go and experience it for yourself to understand how much a hotel staff can enrich your stay. Thank you once again and should we ever return to Chiang Mai, there is no question of where we would hope to be staying.

What you get at the Vanilla place is just so good, it cannot be adequately described in words. Because what you get - the service, the attention to detail, the genuine smiles etc, is an incredible experience rather than just somewhere to stay.

What has been written here previously about Mr Kem, Mrs Kat & their staff is all true.but there's more. You'll find out what it is when you stay. Its just that good.

With Mr Kem, you feel so welcomed, it's like you are part of his close family, or an old friend.

A stay at Vanilla Place with Mr Kem & his knowledge & generosity will quickly absorb you into the culture of Chiang Mai.

For this, I can't thank him & his lovely wife Kat enough.

Craig, Ingrid & Sophie,
Australia.

Stayed here for 5 days in July 2009 for 680 baht/night for a single room with a private bath. Continental breakfast was included.
Mr Kem picked me up at the train station and was unfailingly helpful (but in no way pushy) with recommendations and advice on what to see/do in the area. He and his wife were charming. They helped me book a trekking expedition & recommended a travel agent to arrange flights/train tickets.
The room was spacious, simply decorated and spotless. No frills.
The guest house in just a few blocks from the night market and the old city. Very conveniently located. You can walk to the train station in about 15 minutes, if you like.
I would stay here again and recommend it without hesitation.

I have nothing negative to say about Vanilla Place! The room was spotless, bed comfy, and the hosts were wonderful. Mr. Kem and Mrs. Cat were perfect hosts and a little bit like dotting grandparents - making sure we tried local fruit, knew where we were going, felt comfortable. They were never invasive, just friendly and fun and wonderful to talk to!
The room was a great deal and a perfect location. We could walk nearly anywhere in the city. I would also HIGHLY recommend Nina Lanna, which is the massage place 2 doors down. Nina and her staff gave the best massages and were a budget travelers dream.
