Vanilla Place Guest House
Ranked #90 of 402 Hotels in Chiang Mai
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 18 February 2011

Although the rooms are very modest, they are mostly clean (not spotless - some minor stains - but not those of dried blood - on the bedsheets) and it encourages you to get out and explore Chiang Mai until the AM hours of the day. It can be a bit of a walk to the night markets but once we became familiar with where we were (after getting lost quite a bit), the walk wasn't too bad, and the tuk-tuks were cheap too.

Service is excellent - Mr Kem & his wife & daughter could not have helped us more. Always with a smile, he organised day tours for us the night before (and at a GREAT price). He had great recommendations on what to do, and provided us with a map with directions to each market. The atmo in the upstairs lounge room is so nice - it is so good to relax with some coffee and toast in the morning. Huge TV to watch movies, sound surround system, common computer with fast net.

Value is fantastic for what we get. At the end of our 3 nights there, Mr Kem gave us vanilla scented candles, which was such a nice gesture. Will definitely stay here again on our next visit!

I've been traveling in Thailand for over a month now and this place has the best service I've encountered in all of the places I've stayed (I've stayed in a lot) - and Thailand is a very friendly country! Mr Kem was a true host; when he tells you "I want you to feel like this is your home" he absolutely means it and he goes out of his way to accommodate his house guests. He negotiated with taxis for us, he gave us recommendations on the best places and sites to see and coordinated all of the details so we didn't face any language barriers, he insisted we stay hydrated with water and never charged us for the drinks he continually offered us, and he was always there with smile on his face, right down to check out when he presented all of us with a vanilla candle as a parting gift.... This service, plus the central location of this guest house which is in walking distance to Old City, many temples, bars, etc., really made this stay perfect.

All reviewers of this hotel comment on the helpfulness and attention given to guests by Kem and his staff. We concur wholeheartedly. They made our stay extra easy and enjoyable by anticipating our needs for travel, taking care of acquiring tickets, etc. They are simply excellent. We are an older middle aged couple (50/60), so found the accomodation somewhat uncomfortable particularly because of he loud music from a bar several doors down the street. The breakfast consists offresh cut fruit, croissants and toast, but no fresh coffee (hot water and instant coffee) A recent Italian reviewer suggested that for the price he might have chosen better in the city and this may be true, but for the peace and tranquility within the city that some reviewers value, you will have to pay 3 or 4 times the price. The Vanilla Place Hotel is all that it says it is, clean, very well located, etc....but keep in mind it is a budget hotel and if that is what you are looking for, you will not be disappointed with Vanilla Place Hotel. Thank you Kem and staff for making us feel so welcome

The hosts Kem and his wife were so friendly!! The whole hotel was very charming from the sweet vanilla smell, the gentle music at breakfast to the souvenir vanilla candle upong departure. The location is fantastic - minutes walk away from the night markets and across the road from several pubs. Thanks again to Kem for making our stay so enjoyable!

I booked this guest house based on reviews. I expected a place worht the money -it is not expensive in absolute terms but is in the middle range for Chiang Mai which is overall an unexpensive city. They picked us up at the airport as promised and the owner is a nice old gentlemen with acceptable enlgish as promised. Nevertheless I really don't see how this place can have all 5 stars and to be honest for the first time we were disapponted with trip advisor. The place has low maintenance, most of the rooms are with no window at all and the breakfast is in an odd room with nearly no windows. Location is a bit "off" which would be no problem as the city is not so big, but unfortunately a noisy club is right in front and, again, there is nice place to stay for little money right in thapae road. Again, nothing to say about the nice owners, but fort the price in Chiang Mai we could find much newer and bright accomodations. Sorry but need to rate down and beware.

What great hosts Kem and Kat are!! They are so welcoming. The rooms were basic but very comfortable. There was a nice relaxed area where you could have breakfast. The guesthouse was central, very close to the river and near the night market and old town. Kem went out of his way in helping us organise our day trips. We went to an elephant park that he recommended and we had a great day there. Good value for money plus he got us a discount! Make sure that you use Mr Ting to take you out on any trips if possible. He was so friendly and made sure that you got the best out of the day. I would definately recommend anyone to stay here.

Vanilla place is an excellent place to stay with simple clean rooms. What makes this guesthouse so special is Mr. Kem and his wife who assist you with any questions you might have. No matter if you want to book a tour, just look for a nice restaurant etc. They always give you the feeling of being at home.
