Le Meridien Chiang Mai
Ranked #21 of 402 Hotels in Chiang Mai
Reviewed 30 October 2009

We stayed here for 9 nights (originally meant to be 4, but we loved the city and hotel). We were upgraded, so had a suite and free breakfast. Here are the highlights.

- New and really well designed - we saw no signs of wear, and everything worked well, from the sliding screens that divided the room to the huge jacuzzi. Decor was warm tones and not cluttered
- Great deal - we paid $110 us/night or so
- Great location, right next to the night market, good boutique shopping, and within walking distance of sights. If you take the red buses or regular taxis and only speak English, the location is particularly helpful as the drivers don't understand much English, but "night market" was universal
- Really attentive service, from booking an elephant tour to helping us get online
- Starwood hotels generally feel to me like business hotels, but this felt less like that than the others
- Excellent buffet breakfast - all kinds of fun small items (smoothie shots, lox & caperss on toast) in addition to the basics
- One of the best gyms I've seen in southeast asia - fully equipped with new machines (cardio & strength), free weights and mats
- Nice pool area, though unheated (apparently almost all in Chiang Mai are unheated) and a little too cold for my preference, even on hot days. I like warm pools, though

We also had a nice discussion with the general manager (as she was walking around the lounge talking to guests), who seemed legitimately interested in our opinion of the hotel.

This is a stylish new hotel which is well located right next to the night bazaar and within walking distance or short tuk tuk drive to many restaurants. Rooms are well appointed and very comfortable. Fitness centre and pool are good for a 'non resort' style hotel and we used both. We booked direct via the hotel website which was the cheapest option and very good value at around AUD125 per night.

The only complaint as such was the service, particularly at breakfast (food and selection were good). There were plenty of staff however their focus seemed to be more on clearing and setting tables rather than serving. There was also a travel agents conference on when we stayed and it was obvious the staff were going out of their way to make sure the agents were well looked after, to the detriment of other guests. This was the only negative in what was a great stay, and resulted in the 4 star rating in lieu of 5.

For the price and quality, most people would be well satisfied.

This city hotel is very convenient located on Chang Klan road and near night bazar.
The room is new, clean, roomy and provide good amenity. No free wifi.
You can see Doi suthep and Chiang mai city view from the swimming pool. The fitness center is O.K. The staff is not professional enough so it can't rate in 5 star hotel.
They have to practice their service mind.
The breakfast is O.K. but no egg station.
Otherwise it's O.K. because of its' good location and it's new .

This is located right beside the night bazaar. While the bazaar itself has lost its attractiveness compared to the newer walking street, it is still a very convenient location to be at.

The hotel and our room was modern, clearn and spacious. Someone looking for authentic nothern thailand expeirence might not like this, since it offer none. But we have been in town many times and comfort and convenience is more important, and this is perfect.

Let me begin by saying that I have stayed in ritz carltons and four seasons around the world. The Le Meridien Chiang Mai has them all beat. I didn't even want to leave the hotel during the day. Top ten best things about the hotel: 1. the staff speak english. No, not the english they speak in the rest of SE Asia, the real english that you and I speak. It's a welcome pleasure and was so, so so helpful in planning our stay. 2. the rooms- where to begin. the incredible rainfall shower- amazing water pressure and an amazing shower. 3. the rooms- delicious waffleknit robes and slippers, great shampoo and conditioner plus special aromatherapy shampoo and conditioner for those who prefer 4. the bed- the plushest softest linens i have ever encountered, the best sleep i have ever had, the bed felt like it went on for miles, 5. the restaurant downstairs was DELICIOUS for thai food and even more delicious for western food. the breakfast buffet had lox! lox! who ever heard of lox in SE Asia?! 6. the italian restaurant in the hotel- we had an amazing meal there, delicious and romantic, with fresh, homemade pasta (you can see them make it), a great wine selection, and excellent food and service, 7. the service- everybody in the hotel is amazingly nice and helpful. it felt like they turned down our room a hundred times a day and yet the service was still invisible 8. the hotel itself- beautiful and spacious lobby, with an illy coffee bar for an afternoon espresso- beautiful 9. the front desk- we had an issue with the airline, they called for us, we had a question about furniture we bought, they helped us- they are top of the line hotel people, and 10. gorgeous pool on the roof and large gym. truly no reason to leave this hotel.

Location: The hotel is right in the city center and is close to Night Bazaar, restaurants, and all the fun spots.

Room and Common Areas:

The room I got was quite spacious. Everything worked well and functional. Bed and pillows were comfortable and clean. There was a big flat screen TV. There was a mini-bar, coffee, tea. Nothing felt short of expectations for a hotel of this class. Bathroom was clean, functional and had separate shower and bath tub.

The lobby was large and nice. I think they were going for the artsy ambience-there were various pieces in the lobby.

The breakfast was really great. One of the better ones I have had. There was Thai food as well as western food. The variety and quality were just absolutely great. I cannot think of any better hotel breakfast except the Raffles.

The fitness room was really large and seemed to have lots of equipments. The pool was also very clean and large where one can do lap swimming. I used the pool many times during my stay. The pool staff was very attentive. The view from the pool was great as well.

Service: Everything was more than adequate. However, the concierge gave me erroneous information twice.

Recommendation: Absolutely.

We had a superb time at the Le Meridien @ Chiang Mai. The hotel is above expectation and very impressive, the staff are all very attentive and welcoming. We met a concierge by the name of 'Ya", and he was just the absolute best!! A genuine person willing to help and a wealth of local knowledge, he provided us with all of the best recommendations which were to the best interests of us as visitors. He really looked after us and made our trip that much more special. Our room was very clean, comfortable, large gym facilities very clean and modern, and the breakfast, yes... and the breakfast! was amazing with such choice of quality fresh foods. Also Le Meridien is conveniently located near the night markets, night bazaar, convenience store and fast food outlets. Above all of this, Chiang Mai was the highlight of our trip to Thailand and we only wish that we had spent more time there. We will definitely be going back to 'Chiangers' and visit our friend Ya and spend more time in such a lovely part of Thailand. As an addition, Ya had a friend by the name of 'Ding' working at the hotel Park Plaza in Bangkok - who was equally as helpful - please check out our review on Park Plaza Bangkok if you intend to go to Bangkok.
