“Good place with friends”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 June 2014 via mobile

Spicythai is a good place to stay with criends with a helpful staff and free breakfast. Besides that, the rest of the place is ok. The place is Clean, but rooms are too crowded and the price is not as cheap as other places, the çocation could be betterr, but if you are not very demandin, is a good option.

Pretty cheap hostel just outside of the main square in Chiang Mai. Rooms are basic, wifi can be tempremental, beds are ok, rooms are kept clean and you get breakfast included (toast, bananas, tea and coffee). The showers are downstairs and semi-outside, which means that although it is kept clean, small bugs do get in. The hostel in general does have a great atmosphere and is really easy to meet people- and the staff are very helpful. Only thing is that if you want a decent nights sleep- go elsewhere. The noise from the communal area travels right up to the rooms so it is pretty hard to sleep until the partying has finished. If you do want to stay here you'll need to book as far in advance as you can, as the beds fill up very quickly.

I stayed here for almost 4 weeks (or more) in all in my two month trip of Thailand. And easily this place was the best in all respects.

For a solo traveller looking to meet lots of people there can't be a better place than the breakfast table/common room of Spicythai.

The hostel is 10-12 minute walk from the city centre. But close enough from all other basic necessities like street food stalls, laundry, bike rentals and 7-11.

The hostel organises some or the other day/half day trip almost every week. And most of the trips are almost free except for cost of renting a bike if its a bike trip or tuk tuk hire or money for lunch. And most of these trips are to places which backpackers hardly visit or are places with more local flavour.

The entire credit for making this hostel such a fun place goes to Noom, Rob & Tom who make some of the friendliest staff that you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. Its a pity that Rob & Tom have left and gone back home.

Breakfast is free (Coffee, Tea,Toast, Jam & Marmalade) and there are fruits on the table all day. Showers may or may not be hot depending on which one you go to. ACs in the dorms work well . There is huge flatscreen and a huge collection of movies and music in the common area. Internet is decent. People are friendly.

Upon hearing other reviews, we decided to give this place a shot. Only dorm rooms so if you like privacy, don't stay here. The biggest complaints are the mosquitos and other backpackers. It's hard to keep anything charged when there are only a couple of plugs in the room and someone is using them for all of their electronics. If you are trying to get sleep, you may want ear plugs as people can be inconsiderate at times, but such is the life of dorm rooms. The staff is very friendly and will help book anything you need, bus tickets, tours, etc.

I had an amazing time staying here. Yes, in some ways it is a little basic, but that is more than made up for with the atmosphere. If you are a solo traveler, then I would recommend this place. most of the people there were traveling by themselves, and this made it easier to socialize.

The staff members were great, always willing to help, and sometimes going out of their way to accommodate what you wanted. They also organized 'family' outings where all the people staying there could do something together.

If you are traveling by yourself, then this is the place to stay. But if you are looking for a good night's sleep, then look somewhere else!

This hostel is good for 1st time solo backpackers but it's very far from the center. It's a good hostel if you want to socialize, if you want a good night's sleep pick something else. Facilities needs an upgrade, not enough sockets, wifi is dodgy. Staff was accommodating but there was no one at reception at 8am and I wasn't able to get my key deposit back. In general wouldn't recommend this hostel, you'll find something better in the center.

This is a great place to stay if you're travelling alone and want to meet people. The dorm rooms are fine, the bathroom isn't great upstairs but the showers downstairs are adequate. Nice communal area. I only stayed one night because I was passing through but ended up going out with a big group of people so that was good. The woman on reception was lovely and very helpful for booking onward travel. I would stay here again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In 2006, we created our Spicy Hostel that has since hosted thousands of very happy travelers... Do not miss your opportunity to experience the spiciness in Chiang Mai.Beginning in September 2006, we have shown this country what a real backpackers hostel is and how to run a great hostel. Rated No.2 in Asia 2007 and No.1 in Thailand 2008, Spicythai has really brought the backpackers hostel to life in Thailand. A group of young locals with lots of travel experiences and warm hearts have created each Spicy and have brought them to the top of the game in a very short time. Six years of success prove very well that we have been doing the right thing. Now Spicythai is in its new location: an even bigger and more beautiful house in a more convenient location, close to the Old City.Special Features at Spicythai;Apart from normal stuff that you will get at budget hostels such as free toiletries, a book swap, reference books, bed linens, parking, city maps, tour information, etc, we offer more including:- Strong and firm handmade bunk beds (no funny noises to annoy you while sleep)- AC in all dorms (we live in the city so AC is a good investment for climate and pollution)- Free coffee and tea with toast, butter and jams- Kitchen with free spices and oil- Original honesty system mini-bar with 24/7 easy access- Big-screen TV & home theater system with cable TV and an incredible collection of movies and TV series- Communal computers with high speed internet until midnight and 24/7 free WiFi- Free use of storage closet ... more   less
