“An oasis in Chiang Mai”
Reviewed 20 March 2014

A boutique hotel off the busy streets in the old city. Perfect location.
Rooms are not large but totally adequate and the beds were better than most hotels in this rating.
We stayed for 6 nights and really enjoyed our visit. The staff was friendly and helpful when asked for directions etc.
Rooms were clean and love the second floor room overlooking the pool. Quiet and serene. Rooms have a desk and comfortable chair for internet usage and the outdoor balcony was awesome with teh padded bench for seating. No problems with the internet.
Hot water was sometimes a bit cooler than it should have been during the busy morning hours.
Breakfast was good and included in our room fee.
The pool area was a plus with awesome seating for relaxing. The water was quite cool in Feb but some people took the plunge. The sun is shaded by the hotel most of the day but I am sure as the temp soars in Chiang Mai this will not be an issue.

This hotel is situated in an excellent position down a quiet road in the Old City. The pool is lovely and eating breakfast on the patio was a great start to the day. The room, on the 2nd floor, was in need of a little upgrade as there were marks on the wall that looked like blood and the sink & shower did not drain very all. The bed was hard but that is something one can not get used to in the East as most beds are like sleeping on the floor. The front desk staff were very helpful.

Room Tip: We were in room 211 on the 2nd floor and it was hard work dragging our cases up and down as there is...

Vieng Mantra has an ambiance that has made it feel like my home away from home. This is my third visit within one year. I have stayed in standard and deluxe rooms. Deluxe have bathtubs; but personally prefer the standard rooms
#83 and #7 with showers and floor covering in a type of laminate wood; deluxe rooms with bath sometimes just have concrete floors. Ask for a room away from soi 1 (alley) because it can be a bit noisy with the restaurants just across from the hotel. Room 7 is in the bldg. next to street but quiet. The included breakfast buffet has many choices and is quite adequate (just keep the eggs warm, please). The pool provides a nice retreat on a hot day with books to read nearby and free use of computers if one is not traveling with their own. Free Wifi provided throughout the premises. On this last visit the restaurant was serving light meals, fruit drinks/smoothies as well as alcoholic beverages, at poolside if you prefer. Above all it is the manager,JoJoe, and his wonderful staff who make Vieng Mantra so special. "It just feels good and that is why we keep coming back," confessed a Thai couple from Bangkok. I totally agree. I'm an older woman traveling alone and have always felt safe and cared for at Vieng Mantra.

The hotel is in a good location three minutes from the Tae Phae Gate on a soi that is not to noisey at night, ask for a pool view room as you don't hear any noise.

The rooms are a good size for two people (we had a standard one) very clean and the luxury of having hot water at the sink(its a man thing for shaving),bedding changed every day so were the towels.

Breakfast was more than good enough for us they had bacon! and filter coffee, the food was replenished quickly and there was a fair varitey.

Some of the staff could have been a little bit friendlier.

You don't get alot of sun on the pool due to the height of the hotel even it is only three floors because they have made maximum use of the land but the beds are comfy and always free because Chiang Mia is to see not to sit by the pool all day.

All in all a good hotel in a very handy position to explor the inner city sights walking street market is at the end of the soi, night market is twenty minutes walk over the moat so we think it's very good value for money

We stayed here for 5 nights and it was really good. By Thai small hotel standards it was pricey at B1900 per night (about £35) but worth it we thought.

It's built in the open local style with wooden open staircases and open verandah type corridors to the rooms which makes it light and airy. We had a superior room - a little on the small side but perfectly OK for a few nights stay. The bathroom again was very small but adequate and really clean. The bar downstairs is also open and airy and surprisingly peaceful when you consider the hotels proximity to the Take Phae gate. This is where we had breakfast(included in the price) and which otherwise sells reasonably priced snacks and drinks. The pool area is lovely and picturesque and is decidedly handy after a hot afternoon sightseeing.

The hotels location inside the old city means you can visit most of the Wats and find really good places to eat on foot. Top prize however goes to the hotels young and very obliging staff who will arrange trips, tours or who will get advice for you if any problems arise. They even took care of our luggage for us when we went to Mae Hong Son for 3 days.

Just a couple of flies in the ointment to mention. The furniture in our room has very definitely seen better days and could do with a makeover. The other thing was breakfast. Although there was a good choice at the buffet the bacon & eggs section was always lukewarm at best and cold at worst despite being in a heated tray. In the end we avoided them as there is nothing more off putting than cold eggs.

All in all however, we had a peaceful and enjoyable stay and would recommend this hotel wholeheartedly.

Room Tip: If you plan a trip longer than a few days it would be worth taking a deluxe room which is bigger

A friend and I booked a room with two single beds, only to arrive and see that just a single bed was in the room. Initially the staff refused to change it, saying that it could only be done the following day, but after persisting they finally did. This meant that they simply pulled the two parts of the bed apart, but not very far and for a very good reason, as we immediately saw that the space between them was horribly unclean.
Furthermore, we had booked a taxi at a specific time to go to the airport, and just as we were about to leave, the front desk informed us that they had simply cancelled. The alternative they offered was to take a tuk tuk or a red car, which is not really comparable, but as we were then suddenly pressed for time we had no choice. Additionally, the price was also left the same.
Anyway, having said that, there are also many positive aspects to this hotel. First and foremost, the location is absolutely excellent. Situated right inside the old city, all of the sights are within walking distance.
The rooms are otherwise nice, though definitely too small for two beds. This also counts for the bathroom, which is so small you'll invariably sweat after leaving the shower. The balconies are amazing, with a cute little bench that overlooks either the city or the pool area, depending on what you choose.
Speaking of the pool, it is nice and big and there are very comfortable sun beds around it. Next to it there is a small bar for coffee, snacks and the like. A little expensive, but very convenient.
Breakfast is really good, with nice stong coffee and a varied choice between Thai and Western-styled food.
All in all, the inconveniences were only minor, though it gave us a feeling our wishes weren't really respected very well and that the staff could have handled it with more tact. I would still wholeheartedly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the city, especially for the price that you pay.

The location of the hotel is excellent, only a few hundred metres from the Tha Phae gate down a little lane. We stayed in a room on the top floor at the back so had no problem with noise. The pool looked beautiful but way too cold for a December swim! The hotel is unfortunately a little tired looking in needs of some smartening up, although it was very clean. The breakfast options weren't extensive and the staff, although polite, were not the most helpful. Some seemed unaware of hotel amenities such as laundry and the bar and we had difficulty getting many answers from reception. Not sure its worth the money in its current state.

Room Tip: At the back!
