Owner description: This is an amazing museum about Chiang Mai's history and culture. It opened in 1999. Their web sit is a bit hi-tech quirky.

“A good starting point to understand the Lanna culture and history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2014

The admission fee is 90 Baht for a non-Thai adult and for 180 Baht, you can enter two other sites - the Lanna Folklife Museum and Chiang Mai Historical Centre. It is a fairly good deal for you to have an overview of the culture and history of the Lanna Kingdom. I completed all three sites within 2.5 hours (each of the sites are fairly small). If you only have time for one museum, I would recommend the Arts and Cultural Centre as it has very good exhibits and explanations.

There are also audio commentaries at some exhibits but some of them can be quite long, so be prepared to linger around to wait for the commentary to end. Unfortunately, some of the audio commentaries were not working.

“Interesting enough”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2014

They have a decent number of artefacts from the history of Chiang Mai, though not a heck of a lot of information. It's air conditioned, and takes a couple of hours to get around.

“Best Souvenir Shop in Chiang Mai”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 December 2013

This relatively new shop has a lovely selection of handcrafts actually made in Northern Thailand, not imported from Chinese factories. Worth a visit. Located on the 2nd floor above the Cafe, you can visit without seeing the exhibits. Ask at the front desk.

“Culture to the Max!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 December 2013

The National Museum is found in the centre of the old walled part of Chaing Mai. We loved the buildings themselves, the main house set in its own grounds was beautiful and tranquil. The house was originally the Town Hall. The museum is amazing, we learnt the story of Thailand (as much as we could follow with all the Kings with extremely long names!), saw old instruments, carts, set ups of old houses, saw the Thai people's way of life, their battles, the part the British played in their history and lastly....downstairs their is an excavation site showing the city earth as it was hundreds of years ago about three metres below the present visit! We had a love drink in the cafe - such good service. I bought about $30 worth of beautiful souvenirs - a lovely Thai style necklace, silver elephant pipe and more. Don't forget the second museum just over the road.
