I have to give this the highest rating. David and Nuy have not only created an amazing guest house but are also the best hosts. Even booking was an easy experience, with immediate responses from my emails and recommendations for tours, places to eat etc. Our room was very spacious, clean and comfortable. I would highly recommend Funky Monkey to anyone.

I have to give David and Nuy highest ratings even though they could not accommodate us on this trip because they still bent over backwards to arrange tours, give top advice and make us feel at home in Chiang Mai. On their recommendation we stayed nearby at Top Garden which we rated highly (see my review) and we often ate breakfast at Funky Monkey and had great day trips organised by them. Thank you David and Nuy ...Nick and I wish you all the best for a thriving future!

Room Tip: They were full so stayed nearby

I have always stayed at mid to high range hotels in Chiang Mai but decided to give The Funky Monkey a go based on its reviews on Trip Advisor and i was so happy I made this choice. David and Nuy are terrific hosts and nothing is too much trouble for them. David's map is excellent and I loved Angel's Secrets and The Free Bird cafes. The rooms are huge, very clean and all ammenities are supplied ( hair dryer, shampoo, water, fruit.....) Truly for the price it is a bargain. I will be back that's for sure!

Room Tip: Only three rooms so you need to book early. The room with a balcony was great but all rooms are the...

This is my fourth trip to Thailand, I have previously stayed at 4 star hotels but this little guesthouse tops them by a mile. We stayed ten days with Dave and Nuy thankfully they had a cancellation which allowed us to spend most of our time with them. The. Guesthouse is excellently located a few steps from the moat. It is an EASY 5 minute walk from the Sunday Walking Market. It is less than ten minutes walk to Wararot Market. The guesthouse is located down a quiet soi, but merely steps away from bars and good eating. It costs approximately $1 AUD to get to the night market area. The bed would have to be the most comfortable softest one I have ever slept on in Thailand where hard beds abound. It is a pillow top no less. The aircon is super efficient and lovely and quiet. The room is quite simply massive, like staying in a small apartment, the fridge is a good size. There are great small touches such as the cute cane reading lamps over each bed in the shape of a palm tree. The towels are soft plushy and absorbent and are laundered every day, the room itself is made up each day to a hotel standard and this guesthouse is spotlessly clean. The bathrooms contain free shampoo and soap and plenty of it. The shower has excellent water pressure with plenty of hot water. Even the bathroom is large. The free water in the fridge downstairs was very much appreciated, do try some of the Thai sweets wrapped in Banana leaves that Nuy places on the counter downstairs they are delicious, there is also free fruit available. Wow what other place would do that? The owners are what makes the difference. Most guesthouses offer tours and most push them upon you whether you want them or not. Funky Monkey offer all of the tours you can do most with a discount from the listed price, they also have motorbikes for hire, the brochures and information is all there but it is not pushed upon you, something that appeals to my Australian reticence. Do take their in house tour with Sathorn, he takes you on an amazing day trip visiting an ancient temple, a national park with a running waterfall a coffee plantation and a hill tribe village. He will also adapt the day to your interests and abilities it is a fantastic day and a chance to see and learn about the less touristy side of Chiang Mai.Try not to carry too much stuff particularly at the waterfall and try to wear nonslip swimming shoes as it is very slippery. Fatdog accompanied us on our day tour which made it rather special. Sathorn gave us a good insight into Buddism and is a pleasure to spend time with, his command of English is exceptional.firstly I would like to speak of Dave, the laconic Englishman with his map and it's carefully marked places to eat, bars and attractions which made our stay fantastic. Do go to the places he suggests, not one of them disappointed us. Nuy is just beautiful, she cooks the best breakfasts in the world and I wish I could fry an egg as well as she can. The English breakfast keeps you going all day and the HP sauce makes a nice change from all the chilli. Those 4 star establishments with their lavish buffet breakfasts give me regular diarrhoea to begin the day not once did I succumb at Funky Monkey. The breakfasts have an excellent choice and are done for a very minimal cost. Nuy also kindly wrote out addresses in Thai for tuk tuk drivers and directed me to an English speaking pharmacist when the dreaded travellers sickness hit my husband. Even the staff coming in to help during the day with their happy faces and cheerful greetings make the guesthouse extra special. Let's not forget the furry hosts Fatdog and Muttley both impeccably polite creatures who add to the great family atmosphere. Even Dave's English friend who directed me to the shop selling ecigarettes was helpful. I would and will stay here again in a heartbeat it is wonderful.

Room Tip: Book early this place has good reviews for good reason

As soon as we arrived by taxi we were welcomed by lovely smiles and a cold beverage! Nuy and David made us feel so welcome and gave us very helpful information. David told us all his recommendations for eating, which were all delicious! They were very good sorting out getting my friends missing bag from Bangkok airport delivered. We had a huge and spotless room with air con. The trips they organised for us were so much fun and very reasonable and picked you up from the guesthouse! We got fresh fruit and a beverage every morning for breakfast and as much water as you want. Nuy and David were very helpful in the weeks before our arrival via email and made our stay in Chiang mai memorable. Thank you! ☺

Room Tip: We were on the forth floor with only stairs, but our bags were carried up!

We stayed at Funky Monkey at the end of April during our trip to Thailand, and had an amazing time! The communication with David and Nuy via email before we even arrived was great - they were extremely helpful and replied very quick so we knew we had chosen well!

We arrived at around 8:30 in the evening and were made to feel very welcome by David, Nuy, Fat dog and Mutley! They gave us a drink and sat down with us for about an hour going through everything there is to see and do in Chiang Mai, and most importantly, where we could find the best food and restaurants! The multicoloured coded map was brilliant and we took it with us everywhere we went - I've put it in a safe place at home so I can use it next time! We ate at lots of the places David suggested - out favourites were lemon grass, angels secrets, blue diamond and the place with a wooden door! I definitely recommend them!

The rooms were huge and very clean and the air conditioning was the best we had during our 3 week holiday in Thailand. The guesthouse was extremely quiet both inside and out, despite it's central location - another bonus! Water and fruit was provided free of charge and Nuy gave us a drink in the morning which was a nice touch. I also looked forward to seeing fat dog and Mutley every morning - so cute!!

We booked Woodys elephant camp and Siam cooking school through Funky Monkey which were both great and we would highly recommend! We also did the one day private tour which we loved. The guide, Sakorn was lovely and full of knowledge - he knew the answer to any questions you asked him. He took us to places we would never have gone to otherwise - there wasn't any other tourist in sight! The 1pound lunch was another highlight too, and Sakorns great CD collection! He also gave us the opportunity to go to Wat Doi Suthep which we didn't expect so that was nice as we wanted to visit here - although I definitely preferred to one he took us to!

Overall, a lovely stay at Funky Monkey! We will definitely be staying again if we return to Chiang Mai (hopefully we will!).

Alice and Rob

We stayed at the Funky Monkey for two nights in early March. Originally we just turned up having not booked in advance, it was full, but David and Nuy made us feel very welcome and helped us get a room elsewhere. After a few days we were back, this time having booked a room! Would recommend booking in advance, but if you just turn up you will get the same warm welcome we received.

We booked a trip with them for the Elephant Nature Park which Nuy discounted for us, it was better than any price we could find elsewhere. They carefully select the trips they sell, making sure that they come up to the standard they expect. David was even out for a day whilst we were there addressing some concerns which had been raised with one of the tour operators. He had not just gone to validate these concerns, but to help the people running the tour make the right changes to improve their service. With so many tour operators working in the area, this goes way beyond the usual requirements for a ticketing agent and highlights their constant attention to detail.

Our stay couldn't have been better, the rooms are very spacious and clean with comfortable beds. We could not recommend Funky Monkey enough, for their rooms, trips and hospitality. Even Fat Dog and Mutley made us feel like long lost friends!

Thanks David and Nuy for making our trip to Chiang Mai so memorable, Mark, Chantelle and Etholle xxx

Room Tip: Just book in advance to avoid disappointment!
