“Great cheap place”
Reviewed 23 February 2014

This is a great cheap place for backpackers, very good located, within walking distance to night bazar and old city. Clean and cozy. I really recommend it for everyone looking just for a place to sleep. But the walls are really thin, and expect hearing everything from your neighbour room.

Awesome place for backpacker travel. We stayed here over new years, hotel owners are really friendly and booked our activities, they fit in breakfast around us which was awesome when we were up early. Rooms were really clean as was the bathroom – although the shower was pretty chilly but I was the last to have one so maybe all the hot water had run out. Great location so close to the centre, definitely recommend.

We stayed here for 2 nights a few weeks ago, and out of the 15 hostels/ hotels I have stayed in Southeast Asia, it's my favourite. The cleanest one yet, too.

We didn't have much time in Chiang Mai, but the owners were SO helpful and booked everything we wanted to see and do with 10% off, and even made suggestions for musts in the city. In our experience in SE Asia, the person that books the activities for tourists receives 10% commission..and they just took it off of our cost instead of keeping it for themselves. Best. Owners. Ever.

The breakfast was AMAZING too.

Great location as well. It look less than 10 minutes to walk to the Night Bazaar.

As you can probably tell from what I have written above.... highly recommended :)

Girlfriend and I spent 3 nights here right before New Years. The location is perfect, only a few minutes walk from the east "Thapae Gate" of the Old City. This area is very visitor friendly with lots of restaurants and shops, and a terrific night market was set up every night at the Old City gate, although it may have only been for the New Years celebration week. The guest house itself is down a side street off Thapae Road, so it was quiet and peaceful, while still in the middle of it all.

Keith is a very friendly host, and responsive over email. I booked ahead of time via email, no deposit required, and had no problems. The included breakfast is cooked to order, either a fruit/granola/yogurt bowl, or a bacon/toast/egg plate, both very good. They are happy to book activities for you, but were not pushy at all. Wifi was great in our room.

We had a room on the second floor. The room and bed were clean and comfy, with good AC. Only minor complaint is that the windows in that room were old style wooden shutters with wood framed screens; a bit tedious to open/close and keep out the bugs in the process, although they seemed to seal well once closed. Similarly, the second floor area is open air, which is a great view in the morning, but lets the mosquitos in at night. The small bathroom on the second floor was therefore usually quite buggy. It looked like the bottom floor rooms right next to the breakfast area/garden had more modern windows. The walls in our room were very thin, as someone else mentioned, but luckily still hardly heard our neighbors.

The downstairs large bathroom had many hot shower and toilet stalls, and while not brand new, were kept very clean. In total, while initially off-put by the mosquitoes, we were able to keep them out of the room, and we slept happily all three nights. Got quite used to the place by the end; it was hard to leave! Also was a great value, one of the cheapest stays we had in the country.

Room Tip: You might want to take a downstairs room for the more modern windows.

I stayed in Finlay's cottage for one night due to all the good reviews I had read.

The location of Finlay's cottage was really good, just located outside the Old Town of Chiang Mai and about a 5min walk to the night market.

The cottage feels like you have walked into someone's house! The rooms are clean and basic. Our room included ac and we were given a electronic mosquito swat (a highlight for me!). The bedroom walls are very thin! This means we were able to hear the couple next door to us cough, pack their bags and whatever else they got up too! But i guess that can't be helped in a converted house!

There was WIFI in the rooms which was good.

The communal bathrooms were always clean and the showers were warm.

Breakfast which was included in the room, was great! Cereal or eggs and bacon. We went for the eggs which were perfectly cooked and very tasty!

Ratria, one of the owners, was lovely. Very warm and friendly and she helped us book a cooking class and our transport to the airport (which is about 20mins away)

Don't be expecting any frills here but if you after a comfortable place to sleep, a tasty breakfast and a lovely host, then Finlay's Cottage is perfect.

We have just spent 5 nights in Finlays and don't have a bad word to say! Keith and Rattri are both very helpful. We received 10% discount on any trips or activities we booked through them eg a Thai cooking class and they sorted out a tuk tuk to take us to the airport :)

Rooms are spacious and clean with good air con. And you get a really yummy breakfast (muesli fruit and yogurt or home made bread toasted with egg and bacon) for only 600b a night in high season.

Great location - 5 min walk to old city but in a quiet side street. Felt very at home here. Thanks for a great stay!

This was our second visit to Finlay's, in fact last time we were there we loved it so much we kept extending. To stop us doing that this time we booked a flight so had to leave. Finlay's is the perfect place, you feel at home with Keith there for advice and Ratri to look after you with fantastic breakfasts and her infectious laugh, they really make the place. The rooms are perfect, you get free wi-fi and the location in great, just off the Tha Phae road. We never want to leave and always hope its a bye for now. Thanks for giving us so many more happy memories, hope to see you both in the future.xx

Room Tip: All of the rooms are lovely in a traditional wooden style.
