“Great location!”
Reviewed 3 February 2013

This our final night at the De Chai and we've had a great 4 nights. Itnwas our first time to Chiang Mai and booked this hotel because of the reviews that said what a great location it has, they weren't wrong! You're a 10 min walk from both the nigh bazaar and Sunday walking market. There are some great Thai restaurants in the vicinity too. Hotel is great, very clean and the staff are extremely welcoming and helpful too! All in all a good start to our holiday!

My only tip is if you're flying into Chiang Mai get a taxi from the airport when you arrive rather than through the hotel. The taxis from the airport charge just 120 BHT regardless of which hotel. The De Chai charge 250BHT for a pick up!

Absolutely adore this place. Room is perfect. Staff literally cannot do enough for you. Close enough to walk everywhere, without having to suffer noise. 5 minute walk to the old city and the night market. Very close to the temples. Would stay here again ten times over.

Out of the hotels we stayed at during our 12 day honeymoon in Thailand, De Chai was the best and most memorable for both me and my husband.
The decor was modern and stylish and it was always a refreshing sight whenever we entered our room.
The receptionist staff were super friendly and very helpful and helped me make calls to book tours and activities. Their english was also very good and made communication very easy!

One of the best things about De Chai is its location. If you are in Chiang Mai on a Sunday, De Chai is super super close to the sunday walking street (markets). Walking around and exploring Chiang Mai is also very easy.

One small downside was that I felt that the hot water in the shower was not hot enough ( though this is a personal preference as I like my showers nice and hot), but apart from that, not really anything to find fault in.

Room Tip: We had room 410 and it was great. No noise at all.

I stayed at the De Chai the Colonial hotel for 4 nights in January 2013, with my girlfriend.

The hotel is located down a quiet side street, approx. 5 mins walk from the Thapae gate, to the old city. It takes about 10-15mins in a taxi to and from the airport. We paid 150 baht each way for a taxi transfer.

We stayed in a Superior double room, which was spacious, had a huge comfy bed, large clean bathroom with a good shower. The room was clean, had plenty of storage and a safe. Free wifi was provided throughout the hotel. There was a large LCD TV with various English speaking channels including football :)

Breakfast was of a good standard and plentiful. Eggs were cooked to order in various forms, scrambled, fried, omelettes, etc.

The pool was being re-tiled whilst we were there, so unfortunately it was out of use. This is probably the only downside to our stay, although it wasn’t a huge problem as there is so much to do and see in Chiang Mai.

The staff at De Chai were helpful and professional at all times.

I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone, and would defiantly look to stay again, when I next return to Chiang Mai.

There is no carpark located directly next to the hotel - it's a short 2-3 minutes walk from a carpark (with security) owned by the hotel, so it is advisable to unload your luggage first. A very small breakfast area, however the food's fine as you can order from a list if you are not satisfied with the small buffet table. The spa services are good but not great. We were given an upgrade of room to Grand De Chai. Overall a good hotel.
The rooms and hotel look exactly as the photos by the other reviewers.
Will I go there again? Yes.
Will I recommend my family/relatives and friends? Yes.

Lovely hotel in the midst of the chaotic and noisy streets. Great service at the reception, with staff who spoke English better than in other places, and they were quite knowledgeable about activities, tours, etc. The rooms are huge and decorated with great taste and modern Thai style. Free wifi! :-) We had massages at the spa and they were amazing. The only critique I have is breakfast. The room is clearly too small. On one occasion we could not find a place to sit and waited for a few minutes. Coffee should be ready to serve. Otherwise each person has to order, and it takes a good while for the waiters to come back from the kitchen with a cup of coffee.
Aside from that, a very nice hotel, with helpful staff, and ideally located. One of the best experiences in our 3 week Thailand vacation. Highly recommended.

After booking De Chai we were expecting big things, and the hotel did not disappoint us. We stayed here for 6 nights over Xmas 2012. Here are our thoughts:

Positives:
- Great location, just 5 mins' walk from the gate on the Eastern side of the walled city; many good food options nearby, plus proximity to the night markets
- Located down a fairly quiet side road, the reception is an oasis of calm with its running water and open plan design
- Room was massive, bright and spacious (though no natural light); bathroom was also big and had a sliding partition keeping it separate from the main room; everything was furnished to a high standard and it felt very modern, with good noise insulation - had the feel of luxury about it
- Was nice to have the spa just downstairs, which could be booked at very short notice, however we found the massages to be a little too far on the wrong side of painful!
- Staff were friendly and helped in booking excursions

Negatives:
- The dining area is very small, and we found that we often had to wait at breakfast to be seated; the breakfast selection was average and the staff seemed a little rushed off their feet, which made ordering hot food slow; the restaurant was generally deserted in the evenings - we ate there one time but again found the Thai food to be average, certainly in comparison to the options nearby

Despite being underwhelmed by the dining at the hotel, we were impressed by the experience overall, and were very happy that we had chosen this option; we would definitely consider staying here again.
