“Modern hotel and great location”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

Spend a week in Chai Mai with our 15mths old and thought we'd stay in a nicer hotel (than a guesthouse) knowing mosquito is an issue in rural Thailand.

Location - De Chai is located in a quiet street, yet it's only 5mins walk from the Old City / Sunday Walking Market. However, the night market is a bit further away but nowhere a tuk tuk can't reach. There's a laundry 2 mins from the hotel and they provide an excellent and timely service. Have I mentioned that there's an infamous rotti stand that appears each night around the corner from the hotel?

Room - It's modern and is beautifully designed (even my interior designer wife say so). The dividing wall between the room and the toilet is really neat. There's enough room for our 15mths to roam around the room.

Breakfast - The food on the stand is pretty average; however the "cook to order" food is delicious. Word of advise, don't expect a 5 stars hotel a la carte. Service is great and attentive though.

Mosquito Issue - This is unavoidable in Chiang Mai in general and we did spot a few roaming around in hotel corridor. However, we did not encounter a single mozzy in our room which is a godsend in itself.

Service - There's no shortage of staff on duty and they are attentive and polite.

All in all, we had a pleasant stay at De Chai and highly recommended it.

The hotel is very quiet. It's located at the lane just beside Mahawan temple. It's around 5 minutes walk to Thapae Gate / Sunday Market at Rachadamnoen Road and around 8-10 minutes to Warorot Market. Staffs are very friendly and helpful. They helped you with the direction and calls.

The Deluxe twin room we had was very clean, spacious and nicely designed with earthy colours. Comfy bed that I had very good sleep throughout on my first night, something which was very rare happened to me. There were mosquitos in the room but it's not a big problem as long as you have your repellent on. Bathroom has rain shower, shower head and even bathtub.

Breakfast buffet spread was pretty good - breads, muesli, juices, salad, yoghurt, fried rice / pad thai, sausages, ham and they serve additional hot options upon order - waffle, eggs, bacon, hash brown, porridge, pancake.

It has small swimming pool with jacuzzi at the corner. But the water in the swimming pool is too cold for me. Good during the hot day though. All in all, I was very pleased with De Chai and would definitely consider staying here again... :)

Room Tip: My room was at the last corner the highest floor (5th)

Nice located, in a quite place but close to the old city. It is quite far from the restaurant area (next to the river). Rooms have a very nice design and are clean. They are big, with confortable beds. Although we had quite many mosquitos in the room. View from the rooms is rather on backyards (not the best).
The breakfast is very simple, modest, not a big choice.
Staff is friendly and helpfull.

The hotel and our room was nice and clean. Breakfast was good also. It was in a good location with most places in walking distance. The let down with this hotel was the service of the staff. After staying in several places throughout Thailand, the service in this hotel would have to be the worst. They hardly greeted you and most of them spent their days sitting around on their mobile phones. One morning before breakfast we gave the lady at reception a business card of a red taxi driver and asked for her to contact him to arrange a pick up. He didn't answer but she said she would keep trying while we had breakfast. When we got back from breakfast she said she had arranged the pick up with him. When we got down to the car we found that it was a completely different driver and the price was more expensive then what the other driver had quoted us. We were very annoyed as we wanted to give our business to this particular gentleman instead the lady at reception called someone else even though we gave her a business card. The mosquito's in this hotel are terrible to say the least. We didnt have any problems when walking the streets but they are buzzing around from the moment you enter the hotel and you will find several in your hotel room also. I think all the mosquitos in Chiang Mai live here. If we return to chiang mai we would look for somewhere else to stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in a Superior Room which was nice and fairly spacious

We really needed a nice stay after a rough couple nights near Bangkok. De chai was perfect. It was modern, the beds were excellent, the rooms quite big and the breakfast very good...especially the waffles and coffee.

The location was also good for visiting the markets but isn't really walking distance to the night bazaar. Don't miss the Saturday and Sunday markets (Sunday night market is just a few blocks away). The food there was probably the highlight of the chiang Mai trip.

It's clear to me that with fine establishments like De Chai popping up in Chiang Mai, boutique hotels are the way to go. It's new, clean, modern, but not stuffy. The entire hotel has a very unique and open feel, from the lobby to the rooms. The staff was friendly and helpful. We snagged a modest breakfast each morning which always makes things easy. Located far enough off the main drag, it's peaceful and quiet in the very spacious rooms! Everything in Chiang Mai is just a short tuk tuk ride (or leisurely walk) away. We couldn't have asked for a better hotel for the money or location. We'll definitely be returning here on our next Chiang Mai adventure.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the back of the hotel. Quieter with pleasant view.

We stayed here for 6 nights as our base for activities in/around Chiang Mai. The location is great, being less than 10 mins walk from the Old Town and only slightly further from the Night Market and river. The style is "modern Thai" with lots of dark wood and bright accent colours and was spotlessly clean.

We had a superior room on the top floor and as the hotel is located on a side street there was no noise at night - something that hotels within the old town can suffer from. The bed was the most comfortable we had on our trip and the room also had flat screen TV, tea making facilities (inc biscuits!), hairdryer, complimentary water etc.

Breakfast was excellent quality, with several options cooked to order in addition to the buffet, including the best scrambled eggs I've ever had! We never waited more than 10 mins from order to cooking.

Staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful, though we didn't book any trips, preferring to use other agencies, which were slightly cheaper.

Room Tip: Superior rooms are adequate in size, although space between the bed and wardrobe was a little tight...
