Being Thai residents, some 30+ years ago now and having raised a few children in BKK, very little fazes us when we make a return visit. In the intervening years things have improved. We have witnessed much of what Thailand can throw at a visitor, both the good and the bad and that's what makes Thailand such a fascinating destination. It is user-friendly, fascinating, noisy, dirty, smelly, great food but overall the people make it FUN.
So the Log Home held few surprises. It is conveniently located on a side street, accordingly street noise is minimal. Its land use is compact, the pool is small and the bungalows are set on two sides - whilst the main 2 storey concrete building is on the hypotenuse facing West. This is a pity as the pool is cast in its shadow for the later part of the day. So the mornings are best to catch the rays. In the afternoon do your sight-seeing, not forgetting that, as the day wears on, it gets cooler.
The accommodation is fine. Clean, functional rooms with wall mounted split a/c and cable TV. At this price level the visitor expects functional/working bathrooms and that's about what he gets but do not be surprised if some of the taps don't fully work or the drain is on strike. Pretty standard fare for budget level Thai plumbing and the staff can sort these little things out. However, if you expect palatial bathrooms with full length mirrors, you would have to upwardly revise the budget.
The reception/restaurant/bar area is directly off the street, so the visitor can peruse the menu and review the range of drinks available on the shelves whilst checking out the food on neighbouring tables, very convenient. Food is par for the course, washed down with beer or, in my case, local rum (Sang Som) sloshed over plenty of ice with squeezed lime + soda hits the spot nicely. Trust the local combinations of food & drink, they have been at it for generations, no need for farangs to try and improve a well-proven formula. Forget wine, over-priced for acidic aspirational basic plonk - anyone with a grain of sense recognises it cannot handle highly spiced, sweet, hot, curried Thai food.
The Thai-Chinese owner oversees things from a side desk where the cash is kept. No surprises there! The staff are delightful, as most Thais are. Helpful and smiley - so flash 'em one of yours. Can do no harm.
The only downside, was the tissue thin partition walls between the guestrooms. Noctural sounds from neighbouring rooms could easily disturb the light sleeper. There are solutions however; either take a pill or go for multiples of the drink suggestion above. Should you have noisy or athletic nocturnal habits, out of consideration for the other guests, go elsewhere.
