“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2014

Very pleasant stay at 137 Pillars House. Beautiful environment with lots of plants and flowers around. Staffs there are very helpful and friendly. However, there are too many mosquitoes to disturb our sleeping quality. Also there are too many flies around during breakfast time. This is quite disturbing.

I had a pleasant stay at 137 Pillars House. Facility and service were optimal. Lunch service was great in the neatly appointed setting. Price was relative high, but not unreasonable for the quality offered. Staff were attentive throughout my stay. A true gem!

One of the most amazing resorts ever! The hospitality extended to us by all of the staff but especially Nikki was exceptional. The rooms and grounds are divine. One of the most relaxing and beautiful places we have ever been.

This is a lovely hotel and the staff were outstanding - friendly, thoughtful and lots of nice touches like sending someone to pick you up in person at the airport. Nicky at the front desk was especially fantastic - upon hearing we were going out to eat dinner, she wrote a list of local dishes she recommended we try in both English (for us) and Thai (for the waiter). We were in the smallest suite which were all you would need - plenty of space, free minibar and great facilities. We didn't get to use the pool, but it looked lovely. Breakfast is excellent. Spa is good but expensive. Tours are very overpriced - we found much cheaper options using Tripadvisor, although the staff are very generous with their recommendations. Now to the reason this is 3 stars, not 5 - our room was next to a nightclub and bar. At 1am, the night staff moved us to another suite so we could sleep before our 7am start for a cycle tour. Upon further investigation the next day, it was apparent this is a very common complaint for the room we were in, and we had simply been placed in this room and the mgmt had just crossed their fingers and hoped we wouldn't complain. This is not a cheap hotel and we found this verging on dishonest, to charge full price for what they knew would be a substandard experience. Upon checkout, it transpired the manager was not in, and we asked him to contact us via email the next day. A week later we have not heard anything, which is also disappointing. It's such a shame, as until this problem arose, compounded by very poor follow up, it was really was one of the nicest hotels we had stayed in.

Room Tip: Do not go for Room 23 or the one below this - these are next door to the nightclub and bar. Ask for...

This exquisite world class property exceeded our expectations on every level, it is absolutely magnificent. We loved how the property blended old world elegance with modern day sophisticated luxury. From the moment we stepped foot inside the gates and served a gorgeous glass of “Butterfly Pea Flower Tea”, we felt like we had been transported to another world. We stayed for three nights in a William Bain Suite with our two children aged 8 and 12 and it accommodated us all perfectly. The rooms have been impeccably decorated in traditional Thai colonial style and the tiniest details made such an impression from the umbrellas at the front door (there were tropical rains when we arrived) to the bedtime stories left on our children’s pillows at night.

Standing proudly in the centre of the property is the grand old 137 Pillars House and we urge anyone staying here to take time out to explore it. Its wonderfully rich stories and historic significance really drew us in. The property dates back to the 1880s, the teak trading periods, and Anna and the King times (suggest anyone planning a visit to read this story). The house underwent a monumental restoration process and there is a mini-museum under the main house that documents it – it’s not mentioned here on this forum but its worth checking out.

We enjoyed sitting in this house and taking everything in after arriving in Chiang Mai tired and hungry by treating ourselves to the most magnificent “Thai“ High Tea, one of the best we’ve ever had – four tiers with a mix of traditional and Asian style treats. I never liked mango sticky rice until I tried it here! And children loved the fried ice cream balls. It was a standout, kudos to the chef!

The pool area is also very impressive, with a giant wall, must be at least 10 metres high, and covered with long vines cascading down like a green waterfall. Photos don’t quite capture the magnitude of it and swimming the length of the pool feels kind of like swimming down a river, particularly when the wall is misting. It’s a wonderful place to relax and escape the heat after exploring the sights of Chiang Mai.

The hotel is conveniently located near the riverfront and while its only a short walk into the old city and shopping bazaars, we chose to get around by tuk tuk as the stifling April heat was intense. If you are looking for a grand experience while staying in Chiang Mai, then 137 Pillars House is it.

Our stay was very special and we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all the management and staff. Service was outstanding (and a special hello to Than from our boys!).

We had an excellent stay at 137 Pillars, I would highly recommend it! Location is just outside of the old city, which is nice and peaceful. The service is phenomenal, the food was delicious, and the room are gorgeous (which such comfy bed/pillows!) I hope we get to return to Chiang Mai and 137 Pillars one day!

Nice atmosphère, nice bedroom, very good design and maintenance, excellent location. Only the service is not at the standard of such hôtel and fare especially at check-in and check-out. Food is standard but expensive.
