“I've never stayed at a better guesthouse than this! Awesome!”
Reviewed 18 April 2012

Chiangmai Backpack House is the place to live in Chiang Mai. It is: clean, cosy, cheap. The dorms are fresh and not to big and well looked after. Several toilets and showers with hot water. The food is absolutley awesome and the coffee is probably the best that I've had in Thailand so far (which is about 5 w, and I'm from Sweden so I know good coffee when I taste it ;) ). But the greatest thing about this guesthouse is none of the abowe. It's the people that work there. It is run by an amazing family who really takes care of you. They are truly friendly and makes you feel that you are a part of their own family. Not only are they looking after you they want to make you feel like you're home. So many nights that I've stayed up talking to the couple who owns and runs the guesthouse :) their english is really good and they are the nicest people! I've had a great time at chiangmai backpack house. This is the place to be!

Just spent 2 nights at Chiangmai Backpack House and had an absolutely amazing experience. The couple who owns it are the nicest people ever. They look after you like their own children and their English is great. The hostel is clean, in a convenient location and super affordable. The breakfast is awesome as is the espresso bar. All in all a great place to stay in Chiang Mai.

I stayed at Chiang Mai Backpack House both times that I visited Chiang Mai. As the name suggests, it's a great place for a backpacker to stay. The rooms are cheap. The internet is speedy. I had the hottest, most consistent hot water that I've had in 3 months in SE Asia. It's in a nice location right outside the walls of the old city, and a short walk to the night baazar. They have bikes for rent and good food. I stayed in the 6-person dorm (3 sets of bunk beds) with a shared bathroom for the floor for 120 baht. The mattresses are on the springy side, but nothing to lose sleep over.

By far, the best part about the Backpack House is the staff. It's a family run place, and they make you feel like a part of that family. They're so helpful, and really look out for you. I had a leg injury my first time through. Along with some free bottles of water to make sure I stayed hydrated, they gave me daily reminders to make sure I was taking my pills. My mother could rest assured that I was in good hands! The ladies are incredibly sweet, the children adorable, and the man quick with interesting conversation. On top of that, they are able to get some nice deals on tours and buses. They are quick with good, honest advice on where to go and what to see.

If I return to Chiang Mai in the future (which I hope I do), I know where I'll be staying!

The rooms were no-frills but extremely cheap and clean (I stayed in two different ones, both were spotless). The bathrooms were also kept immaculate. The motorbikes and bikes were in great shape and a good value. Their Western food and coffee were good, and their Thai food was really good - make sure to try the superb massaman curry.

The real value was the expertise and friendliness of the staff, who made me feel at home. If I had a question about a specific tour, trek, location, food, Thai word - anything - they were extremely knowledgeable and provided advice and assistance in fluent English. The location was central and I was within walking distance of lots of good spots, and transportation was promptly arranged for more distant areas. Will definitely stay here again.

Made a reservation for this place *in person*, saw the staff write it down. Made the trek all the way back to this (inconvenient) location on the day of my reservation only to find that the room was already full. Ended up being stranded late at night with no place to stay, as many other hostels in the area were already full.

As for the rooms, you have a choice between really noisy (faces the busiest street in Chiang Mai), or stuffy with no windows or fresh air/ventilation.

Definitely do not stay here unless you have nowhere else to go. Places just a few blocks away are way more reliable/nice.
