I stayed for 6 weeks at the Malin in February and March 2014. I was taking a course just a few blocks away (near the main entrance to Chaing Mai University). I did some shopping around for rooms, did price comparisons, and the rooms at the Malin seemed to be the best for the money in this part of the west end of the city. The building is pretty new (maybe 10 years old) and has all the essentials, except elevators. The four flights of steps I had to climb to get to my room ensured that I stayed strong and fit. The staff were friendly, honest and helpful. I have a few complaints about the property and service, but please bear in mind that none of these shortcomings would prevent me from happily rent from them again. I've already mentioned the lack of elevators. My room was good overall. I appreciated the big wardrobe for clothes and storage. My room had a small balcony which contained the air conditioner unit but in spite of this it was large enough for two or three chairs. It had a large bar fridge and a kettle, but no coffee maker and no microwave. The mattress on my was very firm (almost as firm as a massage bed) and I tolerated it bet never quite got used to it. I had to arrange to have a maid come in twice to spray Raid to kill ants (fortunately they didn't sting but they were annoying nonetheless). The windows didn't have fly screens, so I felt I had to keep them always closed, because there are sometimes outbreaks of Dengue Fever in the city. The shower drain didn't work properly, and it was never fixed in spite of the fact that I complained about it. There's a coin washer and dryer on the ground floor, but the dryer didn't work and wasn't repaired in spite of the fact that I complained about it. The air conditioning unit in my room worked well, and (because there's no insulation in the building) it had to work constantly, but the bill for 6 weeks of electricity was less than $100. Sometimes, I enjoyed waking on the roof of the hotel to enjoy the air and nice views. The Malin has no pool or jacuzzi. Overall, I was pleased with the Malin, complaints notwithstanding (this isn't the USA after all) and (approximately $15 per day) the value-for-money is outstanding. I was very pleased that the staff gave me their lowest nightly rate on a two week stay (after the first month was done). The Malin's location near the entrance to the university is very good, and there's a national park and zoo just minutes away if you need to escape it all. Overall, I'm pleased with the Malin, it's definitely recommendable.
