“Large, Bright, Clean Room, Friendly Helpful Staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

I stayed for 6 weeks at the Malin in February and March 2014. I was taking a course just a few blocks away (near the main entrance to Chaing Mai University). I did some shopping around for rooms, did price comparisons, and the rooms at the Malin seemed to be the best for the money in this part of the west end of the city. The building is pretty new (maybe 10 years old) and has all the essentials, except elevators. The four flights of steps I had to climb to get to my room ensured that I stayed strong and fit. The staff were friendly, honest and helpful. I have a few complaints about the property and service, but please bear in mind that none of these shortcomings would prevent me from happily rent from them again. I've already mentioned the lack of elevators. My room was good overall. I appreciated the big wardrobe for clothes and storage. My room had a small balcony which contained the air conditioner unit but in spite of this it was large enough for two or three chairs. It had a large bar fridge and a kettle, but no coffee maker and no microwave. The mattress on my was very firm (almost as firm as a massage bed) and I tolerated it bet never quite got used to it. I had to arrange to have a maid come in twice to spray Raid to kill ants (fortunately they didn't sting but they were annoying nonetheless). The windows didn't have fly screens, so I felt I had to keep them always closed, because there are sometimes outbreaks of Dengue Fever in the city. The shower drain didn't work properly, and it was never fixed in spite of the fact that I complained about it. There's a coin washer and dryer on the ground floor, but the dryer didn't work and wasn't repaired in spite of the fact that I complained about it. The air conditioning unit in my room worked well, and (because there's no insulation in the building) it had to work constantly, but the bill for 6 weeks of electricity was less than $100. Sometimes, I enjoyed waking on the roof of the hotel to enjoy the air and nice views. The Malin has no pool or jacuzzi. Overall, I was pleased with the Malin, complaints notwithstanding (this isn't the USA after all) and (approximately $15 per day) the value-for-money is outstanding. I was very pleased that the staff gave me their lowest nightly rate on a two week stay (after the first month was done). The Malin's location near the entrance to the university is very good, and there's a national park and zoo just minutes away if you need to escape it all. Overall, I'm pleased with the Malin, it's definitely recommendable.

Room Tip: Choose a room on a lower floor if you don't want your quads constantly exercised.

I got a top room facing west overlooking the plaza and mountains.
Very hot during the afternoon because of the sun.

the balcony is too small to walk out on.

communication was very poor - little English spoken.
they charged me because a towel was dirty - they could have given it to me and I could have used it in the future. It get noisy at night because of the night market and then very noisy when they close down at midnight. Nice to have the food close by for a quick and cheap dinner. 7-11 close by. Hard to find front enterence must go by the blue Malin residence. The blue Malin residence is the main office and you must go there if you have any problems or need the residence cert and then your deposit refund. IF you are a westerner you should just get a room at the blue building which has better amenities and they speak better English. It is also better to compare notes with other farangs.

Room Tip: Blue building is better

I stayed here 2 months during a mission trip to Thailand. The employees are nice and helpful. The rooms are clean. I don't recommend room #1202. I moved out of there. Too hot and there is a flashing sign right out the window that is on almost all night.

Room Tip: There is a night market right across the street. Plenty of food choices. Lots of stuff close by. Zo...

Location:

This residence is within 5 minutes walk to the Chiang Mai University across the road. It is just next to many food stalls and night market downstairs. 7 Eleven is just across the road.

However, it takes around 1 hour to walk to the north of the city center moat. This residence is situated along the North West region.

Taking the red bus to the city center is easy enough and cost around 30 baht but coming back is a problem as most red buses say it is too far and won't take you.

Tenants:

Due to its location, most of the tenants here are young students from the University.

Staff:

The staff have difficulty speaking or understanding English since they deal mostly with local Thai students. Most of the staff are quite polite except for a grumpy middle age woman who works during the daytime.

Noise level:

If your room faces the night market downstairs, it will be noisy. Furthermore, sound coming from the corridor can be heard quite easily.

Cleanliness:

They clean the rooms everyday. The furniture is quite new and the walls seem to be newly painted. There is no bathtub though.

Facilities:

There are no gym or swimming pool. The lounge area is pretty small.

Price:

It is around 550 baht per night which is inexpensive for what you get. Breakfast and cable TV are all included in the price. However, wi-fi internet are charged 20 baht per day.

Breakfast:

Breakfast is actually a buffet right across the other newer building. It usually includes bread, rice, soup and free coffee, ovaltine.

Summary:

If you don't intend to go the city center often, this is a good place to stay as it is very inexpensive. But if you want to 'do more exciting things', it is better to stay nearer the city center as getting a red bus is going to be a hassle unless you have your own bike.

Room Tip: Don't face the night market as it is noisier.

Room was fine with basic facilities.
The shower curtain came down occasionally but it was easy to fix, & the staff were helpful.
Power went out on one night, but that was not uncommon in Chiangmai & it was for a short period, less than an hour, so it was ok.

Residence is located just beside the night market which is open every night. There are people selling clothes, accessories, souvenirs. Food was abundant at the market too!

Service was reasonably good. I lost my keys once & they helped me with opening the door & didn't ask for compensation at all. I forgot whether there is a phone in the room; but at most times when I need things I will walk down to the lobby and ask help directly from staff at the counter. Note that there is no lift so you got to take the stairs.

Breakfast was simple but good enough. Somedays we had porridge, some days pathai. There is bread & butter everyday. Coffee & tea too.

Wifi is free, but you got to remember to get password from the counter staff daily, as each password is valid only for 24 hours.

The place is near two universities so we see students staying there too.

Overall a decent place & I find the price reasonable.
