Spent a week here while visiting family in Chiang Mai and found it to be pretty average, although very busy. We were booked here by our family because the location was convenient to their home. Actually the hotel is in a pretty good location and there are plenty of shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. When we checked in we were given a room with 2 beds instead of a king. The bathroom had a bit of an odor and the beds were pretty firm. The front desk staff were accommodating and we were able to move to a king room the following night. It was a bit nicer, with no odor in the bathroom and a slightly softer bed. My wife said the towels, linens and bathrobes were also better in the second room. The rooms did have a fridge and there was a bedside control box which was handy for turning the lights on and off and controlling the thermostat. The air conditioning in the room was fantastic and kept things nice and cool. The selection of english language television stations was rather limited. The breakfast in the morning was fine, although the bacon could have been a bit crispier for me. Overall I have no real complaints and found the Empress to meet my needs. It was certainly better than the Lai Thai Guest House, the last place I stayed in Chiang Mai.

Room Tip: Get an executive room. They're a little nicer.

I had the wonderful experience of staying at the Empress Hotel in November of 2012. I have only the best to say about this hotel. The staff was absolutely wonderful and so friendly and helpful.
The facility is beautiful and very clean. Our rooms were spacious and comfortable. The beautiful flower arrangement and fruit plate that greeted us when we arrived and the flowers and chocolates left on our pillow each evening were extemely nice.
The hotel is well located, a short ride from the airport and within walking distance or a short tuk tuk ride from the night market. We were able to book tours at the hotel and they were very accommodating and reasonably priced.
The breakfast buffet is wonderful and has everything anyone could want. We had dinner several evenings in the hotel dining room and were treated like royalty with flowers and small gifts. There was a wonderful man in the dining room named Visshard (I am sure this is spelled incorrectly) who spoke english and several other languages fluently. THe hotel is so lucky to have him for he was absolutely wonderful and answered any questions we had. He made us feel like family. We also spent a couple of evenings in the lounge listening to some great music.
The pool is very nice. I had a massage several times and it was great as well as reasonably priced.
Thailand is a beautiful county and the people are so very gracious. Should I ever have the opportunity to return to Chiang Mai again, I will most certainly stay at the Empress Hotel. The wonderful staff there made my stay wonderful.

Great value for money! This 3-star hotel has the service of a 4-star hotel, but I assume that because of the relative age, it didn't get the 4-stars it actually deserves. It is located a bit out of the city center, but this is no issue with the cheap transportation around. We loved the fresh flowers, fruit and chocolates in our room :-)

From the outside, the hotel is impressive, and the lobby is large and nicely decorated. The lobby furniture is traditional Thai style, and very uncomfortable for sitting for very long periods. The rooms were definitely dated. Cleanliness was okay, but could have been better. Amenities consisted of bar soap, shower gel, and shampoo. Upon arrival, there was a small bottle marked "lotion", but it contained shower gel. It is obvious that the hotel reuses the small bottles of shampoo and conditioner. The bottles were not full, had shampoo or soap dripped down the sides, and the tops had black residue around the rims. There was a broken light in our room which was never fixed even though we asked. And even though the brochures in the room promised a free bottle of water every day, we only received the free bottle on our first night. When we asked at the desk, we were told free water was not provided. The in-room price for a bottle of water was twice what the same bottle sold for in the hotel gift shop, and four-to-five times the price at the local convenience stores.

The bed was comfortable, perhaps a little firm for American tastes, but not rock hard as Asian mattresses tend to be. Our room was quiet, with very little noise coming through from the hallway or other rooms in spite of a large conference going on at the time.

There are no room safes. There are boxes available in a room off the lobby, but apparently the boxes (and anything you left there) are not available after 11PM which is very inconvenient if you want to enjoy any of the night activities, including visiting the night market and the night safari.

Some of the staff were very helpful and friendly, some not so much. We received three different answers from two different people when we asked the room price for extending our stay. (We were able to do so through an external agency for half the lowest price the hotel was offering, and we were able to stay in the same room.)

The food at the hotel was okay, but way overpriced. We arrived late and hungry the first night. When we went down to the restaurant to order, we were told it was closed and we could order room service According to hotel clocks and our watches, the restaurant should have been open for another 15 minutes. We tried calling room service off an on for an hour and never got an answer, so went to bed hungry. When we did eat in the restaurant, there was a mysterious charge on our bill, written in Thai, which no one could explain to us. The rest of the items were listed in English and Thai.

This was my third trip to Chiang Mai. It is a beautiful city with lots to offer. However, I do not think I will be staying at the Empress again.

I have forgotten how many times i have stayed at this hotel but it just keeps getting better and better, not sure how many stars this hotel has but whatever it,s rating it is not enough, i find this hotel a home from home place where everyone goe,s out of there way to make you feel welcome.
This time i stayed here for 1 week and the treatment i recieved was exceptional on arrival my room was upgraded i stayed in room 1022. I had free pick up and drop off at airport and 20% discount on laundry plus one free meal in the restaurant, which was absolutely fantastic.
This is one hotel where Happy Hour realy is a Happy time, the staff always have a ready smile and a friendly greeting.
Breakfast is also amazing i like asian breakfast and there is always plenty of choice, and for those that want American style are certainly not forgotten with a great egg station.
The location of this hotel is great, i always walk to the night bazzar but there are plenty of Tuk Tuks at the bottom of the street for those who prefer to take a ride.
The swimming pool is on the 3rd floor, not the biggest in the world but enough to cool you off when the sun comes out.
There are no safety boxes in rooms but you can take one from reception for free and available 24hrs a day.
This hotel is always very busy with large groups of people but i stayed on my own and still had great service the whole time.
I have been trying to learn Thai language for some time and all the staff have helped me espically the breakfast staff and the ladys who work on the happy hour bar. I am staying here again in Febuary next year 2013 and i can,t wait.

Room Tip: Ask for high floor with pool view.

This is a busy hotel with lots of local customers, must be used for business meetings.
A walk to the night market, and half hour walk to the old city. The hotel is clean, the rooms are a good size, the food and service is very good, at breakfast having tea or coffee served to you as soon as you walk in.
