“loved my stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2014

I stayed in the Hug Collection in May 2014 and absolutely loved it. I had booked the family room and it turned out to be real spacious, with 2 king-size-beds, free wifi, fridge, flat-screen-tv, strong split-aircon, big bathroom and powerful shower. Everything was just perfect, including the sumptuous breakfast that was prepared by the front desk staff doubling as cooks every day.
It is a calm place making for real relaxing sleep. If you want to go out and enjoy the evenings and nights in Chiang Mai, it is quite centrally located and easy to go everywhere. The formal address is non-informative, though, so if you are going there, just tell the taxi- or tuktuk-driver to continue straight after the Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Mall (every local knows it), pass the Shell gas station, pass the 7-11, turn right and there you are. A bear in front of the hotel welcomes you.
I guess it is important to mention that this is a hand-knitted, colorful, youthful hotel...so if you are grey and waiting for your death or are the typical business traveller prefering your serious InterContinentals or Hiltons then it´s not for you...if you enjoy life and like colors and individuality - no matter your age - it´s a good place to stay. The mattrasses are strong yet comfortable, you get an abundance of pillows, slippers and even a toothbrush...for me it´s all i wish for in a hotel. You have free parking, too. And the breakfast will fill you up for an active day...there is some variation every day, one time i even got the sticky rice with mango (koniow mamuang), my favorite dessert...
If you read my other reviews you will find that I am a critical guest and don´t praise easily, but this one was very good.

Room Tip: I stayed in 204 - a family room - and I loved it, it´s silent as it faces the interior

We stayed here based on trip advisor reviews and were very disappointed. Definitely wouldn't stay here again.

The rooms look and feel very cheap.

Floors and walls were all marked. When we arrived our room hadn't been cleaned well.

The shower had pebbles in it which look nice, but just grow mold and the shower smelled constantly unfresh. There are also no towel hooks in the bathroom and nowhere to hang towels. Also the shower didn't get very hot.

There is also nowhere to put your suitcase except on the floor. You need to unplug bedside lights to charge your phone.

When asked to book a taxi to the airport this seemed incredibly hard. Eventually they booked a taxi that refused to use the meter and charged extra.

The hotel is not very close to anything and walking anywhere was difficult to avoid cars and traffic.

For the relatively high price you can definitely find something better in Chiang Mai.

Dear Mr. Leske Matthew,

First of all, we would like to express our sincere apologize for the inconvenience which occurred upon your check out. Your valuable feedback has been passed to all departments concerned to recheck, retrain and ensure the high standard of service in all areas.

Please let me clarify that, as a hotel in town property, the room with the color paint's design were marked as the luggage slides on the floor and other decoration was our hotel design that made us different with other.

Located 5 minutes away from the famous road, Nimmahaemin road, 10 minutes from Central Kad Suan Kaew shopping center, 15 minutes from Chiang Mai International Airport.
We had provided the private car transfer from hotel-airport-hotel with the special price @200/way, the taxi we had contact from the taxi center.

However, We thank you very much for the rest of all your comments which we will take into our serious attention in order to improve our services and can be assured that our service will cover with the most satisfaction of all guest arrival.

We do sincerely hope that we would have an opportunity to welcoming you back to stay with us again in the future.

Sincerely yours,

We've chosen this hotel mainly due to good reviews on TripAdvisor + colorful interiors, as seen on photos. In reality, place turned out to be more of a hostel; room turned out to be not so good, compared to pictures - both walls and floor were poorly hand-painted, which looks rather cheap after closer look + makes floors really slippery. Bathroom had had enormous doorstep - couple of times I was very close to falling down on a concrete floor. Outside street is really noisy, even at nights;besides, windows have a poor sound isolation.
There was a full day without electricity, which is unacceptable for a hotel (I guess, backup power supply is a must have for a place, pretending hard to be a boutique hotel.

Main positive thing about this hotel is it's staff, caring and friendly. Hostel has rather distant location from main tourist attractions, but is a real gem for foodies - there's a number of cozy bars/ caffees on a nearby streets.
Taxi drivers seem to be unaware of this hotel existence, so, write down hotel phone in advance, for them to explain directions to a taxi driver. Use yellow bear in front of the hotel entrance as a waymark.

Resume: given rather high price(90 USD) would prefer to stay is a more comfy/practical place (not pretending to be a boutique hotel) - there's Holiday Inn and Ibis and number of other options with comparable price tags.

Hug collection
First and foremost this place is not a hotel but a hostel marketed as a hotel. As a hostel, it is not bad in its offerings. What I had the biggest problem with is feeling ripped off and charged hotel prices for a hostel. We paid about 4000 baht for a night through Expedia with their discount of 40% however this place is really not worth more than 1000 baht in my opinion compared to other places in Chiang Mai. I have no issue with staying at a hostel but do have an issue with getting charged so much. I just think this place was trying to be more than it was ... Trying to be trendy but was tacky, trying to be upscale but lacked the amenities and staff with any business acumen however the staff were very nice and have no complaints about their politeness. The biggest drawback of this place was the noise of the street which made if very difficult to sleep. In the end we had booked (prepaid) for 5 nights but walked away after 3 nights and found a place for half the price, double the amenities, extremely quiet and just a couple block from the old city.

As noted by recent other review this place has recently changes its name. Old reviews must be read. I did not know of the name change when we booked and found out the day we checked in. I strongly suspect the really good reviews through late 2013 are crafted by either owners or staff. They are too good to be true and I was taken in. Just do your research better than I did.

In summary

Value - terrible

Location - bad (on and busy street - earplugs and a pillow on head was only way to get some sleep) also located too far from old city to enjoy by walking. The good - located close to Nimman area with a few good blocks of shopping and food. Close to university so certainly frequented by a younger crowd. But really lacks the access to the old world feel that we were going to Chiang Mai to experience.

Room - okay but as mentioned trying to be trendy but in end just tacky. Bed was a little softer than the typical hard Thai bed so that was a bonus.

Breakfast - okay but limited to three options and you are forced to pick a time for breakfast so arrive early or too late and you may have problems, options include western, Chinese and Thai.

Staff - very good just need some for experience and some real experience in a hotel if they truly want to make this place transition to a hotel. They won't be able to do anything about the noise but there is potential but not at the prices they want or are charging.

Room Tip: If you stay try to get 4th floor and off the street.

This hotel had an excellent location for us. It is one block from the main pub scene in Chiang Mai, and 20 minute walk from the center of the old town (or a cheap cab ride). It is also slightly on the way out of town which is excellent for tour pick ups; you are in the easy zone for pick ups and you are usually picked up last and dropped off first which gives you less car time and more relaxing time. This is really handy when it's 7, you're dirty, hungry and just want to get out of a van. There are plenty of delicious restaurants and pubs down the street (both local food and western if you need a break).

Beds are huge and comfortable, room is sizable with nice amenities. Thai breakfast was delicious (much better than the other options). The clientele tends towards families and young professionals, so it is quieter but with interesting people if you're friendly.

We were very happy with the service as well. We had them book a trip on ATVs one day before we wanted to go, but our choice was fully booked. They did some digging while we considered our options and found us another, excellent, place to do the same thing for cheaper. There weren't any hidden fees, and they were just happy to help.

It does have the look of a hostel–common spaces, funky decor (they have a major hat theme going on), stairs not elevators, concrete flooring–but it is high quality, with giant rooms and lovely bathrooms. If the floors were hardwood people would call it a boutique hotel and pay twice as much for it (imo). The rooms are huge and have great light from the windows. Common spaces are nice if you're feeling social in the evening. It feels open and relaxing.

We were extremely happy with our stay.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors have less noise, but even the smallest rooms feel huge.

we spent 3 nights in hug collection and were excited about it because of the lot of amazing reviews. fact is... the hostel (i cannot call it hotel) looks great and is fine. but i expect much more from an accommodation in thailand that costs almost 100$ per night (with 65% discount). everything is ok but nothing is great except the bed that is amazing... one of the best i ever had. for the rest... really noisy street, personal with an attitude, not 100% clean (i'm swiss i know i know... we are never happy with that abroad) and only 3 breakfast choices. last but not least... 1 full day the power was off which means no way to take a warm shower, have the included breakfast, to charge our phones, ... and the only apologise was "sorry". i would at least expect a drink or something that shows they are really sorry. would i come back here again? no... but only because i like to try new locations.
