YMCA International Hotel
Reviewed 20 March 2014

My friend and I had to stay in Chian Mai for 6 weeks as we learned Thai massage, so we really needed a cheap but nice place to stay. After a terrible experience with another hotel, we decided to try out the YMCA following a fellow students suggestion.

For us it was only 15 minutes walking to school each day, and only 10 minutes to the old city, which was amazing.

The staff was very friendly, and very helpful. We learned a lot from them, one lesson is to always use a Tuk-Tuk instead of asking them to call a taxi; it's much cheaper.

The Internet was a bit moody, but we didn't come all this way for Facebook. They cleaned our rooms each day, and 2 new complimentary water bottles also. Good shower pressure and heat, bit low for my fiancé who stands over 6 feet, but that's to be expected in Thailand.

The restaurant was also good, with good prices and a good selection.

If I ever return to Chiang Mai I will most certainly return here!

This is the 5th time I have stayed here over the years traveling with friends. The location is good - safe, quiet residential area. The rooms are spotless. Hot shower that works! Friendly staff. Easy walking distance to the local's suburb with Thai eateries. Walkable to the old city too. Great breakfast at a guest house around the corner.
The downside - the reservation system isn't reliable - I had email confirmation for fan rooms and they somehow only had AC avail (for 200 baht more). The first set of rooms had spotty electricals - the AC, fridge, lights wouldn't stay on. The beds were soft - but I like the firmer Thai beds.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that doesn't get the morning sun - it really heats up!

Overall service is still good for the price, but the hotel is very old and needs to be refurbished. Excellent location near malls and public transportation. Front desk staff tries to be helpful, but sometimes language problems and the state of the facilities make it impossible to resolve complaints. WiFi never works properly, plumbing is simply a disaster, bad smells pervade, and the pool has been out of service for months. Restaurant is surprisingly good, but communication can be a problem here too. So many cheap guest houses are now within walking distance that unless you need the extended services offered by the "Y" you might be better off in a small local place for the same price or less.

Room Tip: Some larger rooms have stunning views of Doi Sutep, but the actual accommodations look nothing like...

We booked the YMCA as we hadn't much option for other accommodation during the loi krathong festival. We arrived and were greeted by what seemed to be a very confused young man. We weren't sure if we had come to the correct place as he mumbled to himself and searched among the papers. He unfortunately hadn't an idea what was going on and his English was poor. I think when working in the hospitality industry it's an essential, the information desk in the shopping centre spoke better English than this guy. Anyway we got the room and checked in, it was rather dated but looked fine. The curtains were not great so light woke you up early.

The bathroom had powerful showers, the room had decent air-con, a balcony that you had to climb out onto and a fridge. Each morning two bottles of water were left outside and you could ask for clean towels. House keeping were very fast and managed to clean the room in about 10mins. However I did notice that a plate and cup sat out in the hall way for 4 days.

The restaurant was cheap and nice so we would have breakfast there in the morning. The pool was pretty average, so much so I didn't get into it. The YMCA was cheaper for two people sharing a twin room that getting a bed each in a hostel dorm but the atmosphere was non-existent. The one main positive is that the woman who worked on reception was good as we extended our stay a few times and she was able to do this no problem and we just paid on departure.

YMCA is ok for your own little place but not somewhere to meet people, also a good walk from the centre. I would say try find a hostel near Zoey Yellow Inn if you want to party, if not then YMCA is fine for budget travellers.

We stayed here for 7 weeks while working with a charity. The staff were incredibly helpful and polite and nothing was too much for them. Our room was large, ensuite and had air con. Only negatives were the hard beds (but this is common in Thailand) and the water was a brownish colour especially if it had been raining but we would definately stay there again. It's a bit out of town but the staff were always very helpful in ordering a taxi, the manager even gave us a lift into town one evening! A big thank you to all the staff, you are wonderful people! Kob kun kaa!

I had to stay here for two weeks on two separate occasions for some classes I was taking at the YMCA. We were on tight budgets so we shared bunk rooms but the accommodations were clean and adequate. The in-house restaurant had good, reasonably priced meals. The location is a ten minute walk to the shopping mall, yet is located in a side-street residential area with plenty of mom-and-pop restaurants across or down the street. And, aside from the occasional cuckoo bird, the location is quiet.

Room Tip: Rooms we had were simple and clean, but I know that they also have more upscale rooms as well.

I stayed here for one night before another place opened up. The rooms are clean and basic. The building is a little worn, but I found it an inexpensive place to stay. There are better locations, and this is a bit far from most of the places you'll want to go, but if you are looking for a clean, basic room at a good price, this will fit the bill.
