“Good indian Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2014 via mobile

It was the wifes birthday in Chiang Mai so needed to pull out all the stops for dinner.... Had looked at the reviews for the local Indian Restaurants and they were all average... Then spoke with a friend who recommended The Restaurant at The Anantara.... What an experience from arrival to dinner the service was impeccable... The waiting staff even arranged for a cake with a candle...as a bonus they even got the piano player to play' Happy Birthday'.... We ordered the samosas, paneer tikka, chicken sheekh kebab and the aloo tikki for starters..all cooked to perfection.. The mains were lamb vindaloo, chicken makhani, aloo saag muttar which again were all sublime, not overly spicy but full of flavour. The Garlic naan were cooked so that they were soft and fluffy. The total cost was 8000BHt but worth every baht.....
We have eaten in many a Indian restaurant on our travels but can honestly say that this was by far the best experience we have had...even the kids enjoyed.
the food
Highly Recommended... Give it a go

Dear SonnyFamily123,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your recent experience at Anantara Chiang Mai during which you celebrated your wife's birthday! We are delighted to know you had such a memorable occasion.

The Restaurant on the banks of the Ping River is definitely a favourite for our guests and local community alike. While we have an extensive menu featuring both Thai specilaity dishes and more Western options, our Indian cuisine is certianly a stand out option.

Our talented Indian chefs create magic in the kitchen, complete with tandoor oven!

We do hope that we have the chance to welcome you back in the future.

In the meantime, thank you again for sharing your comments here.

Warm regards

The Anantara has recently changed its name from The Chedi but other than the badge nothing else seems to have changed. The service is excellent and the hotel is the best in Chiang Mai although the Four Seasons which is a way out of town is perhaps a better hotel.

It is a very good city centre hotel yards from the Night Market and very near some excellent restaurants. The reason for the down grade from 5 stars however are that there are some annoyances:-

1. Having been charged £120 each for a very nice New Year's Eve Gala Dinner, I thought being charged an additions £5 for a bottle of water was mean and demonstrates a penny pinching attitude.

2. The Club Lounge is not worth paying for in my opinion. The breakfast is ok but since everything has to come from the main kitchen it all takes ages to arrive. Unlike most Club lounges there are no drinks to help yourself and when we asked for a bottle of water in the day we got a glass of water as we were told this is what they have.

3. The rooms are dark. Why do hotels insist on having inadequate lighting.

4. Breakfast should surely start earlier than 7am when many of the trips that guests are taking start very early in the day.

As others have said, the rooms can be noisy being close to the road but then this is a trade off for being in the city centre and I found this acceptable. yes the frogs were noisy but being in this part of the world you expect noisy wildlife.

There are many positives such as the service, a great pool area, great afternoon tea but they need to make improvements to get this up to truly top class standards.

Dear mbgandco,

Thank you for sharing your comments about your recent experience here in Chiang Mai.

I am delighted to know that despite some reservations, you still consider us the leading hotel in the center of Chiang Mai.

Having said that, you raise some good points for us to consider. Rest assured that we do not consider ourselves perfect and will always look at ways how to improve. We will certianly discuss all the issues you raise and see if we can indeed raise the bar even higher than in the past.

We do thank you for the time taken to share such thoughts and we do hope that you may return to Chiang Mai and to Anantara in the future. We will certianly do our best to impress on the next occasion and ensure we get those five stars from you.

Until then, warm wishes from us all,

A beautiful boutique hotel. The atmosphere invited to relaxation, quiteness and meditation. Staying in the hotel and walking around on the premises between the beautiful pools and decorations, gave a feeling of perfect harmony. The service and food was splendid. Try ou their afternoon tea! And 100 meter from the hotel, you were in middle of the night market and the hectic local everyday life. Two very different worlds, with very different attractions. We loved both, and appreciated having access to both! There are numerous massage offerings in walking distance fom the hotel at much lower prices. And the one we tried, recommended by the hotel, was excellent.

We had an absolutely fabulous time. Their flower arrangement were spectacular. It is the Christmas Season. Dear feliciasandra,

Thank you for taking time to share you five star review of your recent experience with us here in Chiang Mai over our recent peak festive season. It was a special time of year and it was a pleasure to welcome guests from around the world to share the holiday season with us.

The chilly Chiang Mai air is a nice change for us at this time of year. However I realise it was certainly warmer than New York this time of year!

I am delighted to know you found our unique festive decorations a wonderful addition to the hotel surroundings. The team were very creative this year to prepare a very unique but distinctly indigenous Chiang Mai inspired design. Let's see what we come up with next year.

Thank you again for sharing your wonderful review. We wish you a happy and prosperous 2014 ahead and I look definitely forward to our paths crossing again.

Warmest wishes

The rooms are too small for a resort.
The building is located a couple of meters away from a busy road. The noise from the street kept us awake all night.
The room we got has it's balcony perpendicular to the balcony of another room. This meant that we had to keep the blinds down all time otherwise there is no privacy. Our neighbours turned out to be two loud American gentlemen who love spending time t their balcony and discuss how 'awsome' the damn river view is. Unfortunately the blinds didn't do much about their voices.
The hotel looks much bigger in the pictures. It's not a resort, it's an urban hotel.
The breakfast was good with tables directly on the river.
The building is very well designed and looks great.
The Spa experience was pretty bland, although the spa space is very well designed.
The afternoon tea was amazing and highly recommended.

In brief we were not impressed by this hotel. It's definitely not worth the rates they are charging. For a little extra we will go to the four seasons next time for a real luxury resort experience.

Room Tip: The rooms closest to the river are away from the street.

Dear Bob S,

First of all, Happy New Year and thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your recent stay with us during this peak Festive Season here in Chiang Mai.

Obviously I am disappointed to hear that we didn’t match your expectations on a number of key areas and I am sorry that you left with anything less than a perfect impression.

On a positive note, I am happy to hear you enjoyed our breakfast, hotel design and of course our signature afternoon tea!

I would definitely agree with you that we are an urban property and I feel we are quite open about our location in the center of Chiang Mai. There is no doubt we cater to guests who are looking for a retreat and escape but still wish to have the easy access to the best that Chiang Mai has to offer. I would also agree that there may be better traditional “resort” experiences available further out of town in the quiet countryside..

I am definitely sorry if other guests did cause some discomfort and perhaps I would suggest to never hesitate to raise such issues in future with the team while you are staying with us. I have no doubt we would have done everything possible to potentially rectify the situation either by allocating another room to at least provide some option. We are always here to do our best to assist.

Regardless of the above, I again apologise for providing anything less than a perfect experience that matched your expectations during this peak season and I can only hope that you give us the opportunity to show that Anantara Chiang Mai can indeed provide an experience that you would enjoy. We certainly hope to welcome you back.

I wish you safe and happy travels in future.

Warm wishes

A hotel is the sum of its parts. The facility (grounds, restaurants, pool, etc) and the staff. On every conceivable count this deluxe boutique-style hotel is a sure-fire winner. It's elegant and stylish -with it's biggest asset being its staff. They are, one and all, truly exceptional in every respect. With a new hands-on General Manger Designate (Nick) on deck since Anantara took over the hotel, the place just hums along without a hitch. A very big bonus is the Restaurant - which offers Thai, northern Thai, Indian and Western cuisine. With a very talented Executive Chef (Prabhash) in charge the Indian food is, especially, (Prabhash hails from Kerala) top notch. To not stay here would be to miss one of life's great pleasures.

Room Tip: Try and secure a room overlooking the Mai Ping river

Dear Violet and Jeff,

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments about your recent experience with us. It was honestly a pleasure to catch up with you daily while you were staying with us over the Festive Season.

And thank you for sharing such positive comments with everyone here. We do understand that Anantara Chiang Mai is a wonderful base from which to explore the best that Chiang Mai has to offer but offers a true escape from the hustle and bustle of the town which surrounds us on the Ping River.

I know our paths will cross again and I look forward to that opportunity.

Until then, I wish you safe and happy travels and a wonderful 2014 ahead!

My husband and I stayed at the Anantara (formerly known as The Chedi) for 3 nights as of Dec 17th. We were immediately greeted with tea, refreshing towels, and flowered necklaces. Under this new management, they hired a new GM named Nick which kindly greeted us during our check-in who gave us his business card. Nice touch!

The pros:
- Architecture: zen, clean line, modern, love the large outdoor furniture throughout the hotel
- Location: along the river which apparently brings in more mosquitoes, but they spray the hallways with repellant (gave us a forewarning by way of a letter signed by Nick) and also give mosquito spray for your room. Be sure to keep your doors closed at night so you don't attract the pesky creatures. I didn't hear any frogs though like the other reviews commented on. The property is only a block away from the night market which started around 6ish and lots of restaurants. We tried Whole Earth which was just steps away and they had delicious Thai dishes - be prepared to take off your shoes going into the restaurant.
- Rooms: large and clean. They offer you slippers before entering your room which was nice so you don't bring your dirty shoes into the room. The bed, pillows, and linen were very comfortable and room itself was large. The blinds were automated. Furniture was modern and well maintained.
- Safety: The front desk ask that you leave the keys with them when leaving the hotel. This is because the room key is a large metal piece (rather than a thin card) and if you lose the key, the penalty is like 2000 baht or something. We felt totally safe leaving our key with them since they have access anyways.
- Gym: the gym was awesome with up-to-date gym equipment and free weights, bottled water, and fresh towels. They have a full-time staff watching the gym and cleaning the equipment after you use it. The only thing I suggest is pumping up the exercise balls because they were rather flat and offering free yoga classes.
- Breakfast: great service and good variety. Wish they opened up at 6:30 am instead of 7 am as most of our tours started early and it would've given us more time to eat and get ready before we departed for the day
- Staff: super friendly and they even gave us towels to our driver when he heard we were going to get wet at the elephant camp.

Cons:
- Lighting: I couldn't figure out the lighting system and often had to play around with the switches before I turned on the right ones which woke my husband up if he was still sleeping. Also, it was quite dark in the room so we usually had to have all the lights on in order to see what we were doing.
- Bugs: on the first day, we noticed ants in our toilet which was quickly taken care of by the staff. Then I found a small cricket crawling on the floor when I was using the bathroom. These house guests had nothing to do with the cleanliness because the room was very, very clean but probably because we were staying by the river.
- Hotel supplies: very cute set-up for shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and body lotion, but I found that I wasted a lot by the way I had to pour the supply out of the bottle.

We will definitely stay here again and it's sister hotels as we were very comfortable after our long day tours.

We didn't get to use the spa, but wished we took advantage of the daily spa deals since the services at the resort in Phuket we stayed at after was priced higher for the same service. We also didn't experience the outdoor pool because the weather was quite cold in the morning and evenings.

We uploaded our photos of the hotel; be sure to check them out!

Dear jenenzo,

Thank you for sharing your review of your recent experience at Anantara Chiang Mai and of course your pictures too!

I am delighted to read that you enjoyed our large rooms minutes away from the activity and action of Chiang Mai, but still in a calm and serene environment which enables you to relax and recharge after a day out exploring. We definitely appeal to those travellers seeking a combination of city life in resort-like surroundings and there is no doubt that has been the secret to the success of the property.

We certainly take note of your comments and we are considering such items as we move into 2014 with plans to ensure we continually aim to raise the bar to new heights. No property can ever claim to be perfect and it is only with comments such as these that we can target areas for improvement.

I am certainly happy to hear you had a wonderful time overall and we certainly hope this wont be the last time we welcome you to Anantara Chiang Mai.

Until then, we wish you a happy new year!
Warm wishes
