“restful, relaxing and excellent stay”
Reviewed 11 January 2014

if you intend to be well treated, this is the place...Anantara Chiang Mai resort is an excellent place to stay, we spend our last 3 days in Thailand there, as couple. The hotel is very well located, just few minutes from night market, besides the river, and our breakfast actually is extremely pleasant, with delicious local and international food, while enjoying the riverside scenery that is so peaceful, after agitations that are typical when we visit any cities of Thailand...The suite is very comfortable, if you can stay in a room with river view, it is even better. All the staffs were very efficient, discrete and helpful with any request. We strongly recommend this resort. Comparing to other hotels, the hotel is not cheap, but if you wan to have special memories, this is the place to stay, not to mention that there are many common areas that you can stay in the hotel, as lobby, where you can enjoying live Thai music, the swimming pool (what a view!) and so on.

Room Tip: all rooms have balcony, but if you can afford one with river view, it will be the best!

This was by far one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. It gets an A+ for location, service, cleanliness, ambiance, and food. Everything was top of the line here. I would not stay anywhere else in Chiang Mai. It is a gem!

We are currently staying at this hotel and am very pleased with our stay. For us the highlight has been the outstanding service of all the staff. In particular, the restaurant is excellent both in terms of menu and ambience. In addition the entire Food and beverage staff does an excellent job with service and there is nightly live dinner music which is some of the most soothing we have experienced. Mr. Somchai, also know as Ouam (the manager) is very engaged with his customers and Mr. Kulladej (our waiter) also known as Bomb made our dinners delightful. My wife has a restrictive diet and Bomb made sure all of the meals were suitable for her.
The most engaged, friendly and competent restaurant staff We have experienced in some time.

On the room for improvement side, I think the owner should invest some capital in refreshing the rooms. In our view the lighting needs to be improved with any refresh that might be done to the overall space. Everything about this hotel is five star except the rooms...they are not bad just not five star. Right now, the staff carries the day!

Spent a weekend night at the Anantara and highly recommend for the location, romantic spirit, great customer service, and fine quality of the whole experience. Gen Manager Nick Downing even handwrote an anniversary congratulations along with a complimentary hotel welcome treat -- not expected but very appreciated. The riverside pool is gorgeous. Would stay here again.

Dear HoochBrenner,

Thank you for your top notch review of your recent stay at Anantara Chiang Mai.

I am indeed delighted to know that you had a wonderful anniversary with us and I can only hope this wont be the last time we welcome you back. Or perhaps next anniversary, try one of our other resorts here in Thailand, Anantara Golden Triangle or our recently opened Anantara Layan in Phuket. It is a truly stunning new resort worth experiencing!

Either way, we wish you a wonderful year ahead and thank you again for sharing your review.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Anantara Chang Mai (formerly known as The Chedi). The service was impeccable and the staff attended to our every need. We stayed in the Club-level suites on the 4th floor and our suite was modern, clean and spacious with a beautiful view of the hotel grounds. The Club-level suites were large and open-concept bathrooms with a spacious balcony with a breakfast and lounge area. In addition to the bottles of drinking water the hotel provides you with (for brushing your teeth, etc.), the room had a complimentary minibar (complete with Pellegrino water, pop, beer, snacks and juice), complimentary spirits (gin, scotch, vodka) for mixing cocktails and access to the Club lounge for afternoon tea and happy hour cocktails and appetizers. The Club-level suites also offer complimentary laundry services (very convenient for light packers) and airport pickup and drop-off, which were well worth it. Upon finding out it was our honeymoon, the staff decorated our room and provided bottles of sparkling wine and snacks. This hotel is located in central Chang Mai so there is a bit of noise that drifts into the rooms from the street, but it's a small price to pay given the hotel's proximity to Chang Mai attractions such as the night market and city center. The staff were extremely helpful and arranged a private taxi for us to visit the Doi Suthep temples, monk village, a local waterfall and nearby Tiger Kingdom and longneck people's village - all at a cost of 300THB per hour. The hotel also arranged a day trip for us to visit an elephant sanctuary where we went on an awesome jungle trek. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast each morning, with a good selection from the a la carte menu as well. Overall, we had a superb stay and would definitely stay at this hotel again on our next trip to Chang Mai.

It was the wifes birthday in Chiang Mai so needed to pull out all the stops for dinner.... Had looked at the reviews for the local Indian Restaurants and they were all average... Then spoke with a friend who recommended The Restaurant at The Anantara.... What an experience from arrival to dinner the service was impeccable... The waiting staff even arranged for a cake with a candle...as a bonus they even got the piano player to play' Happy Birthday'.... We ordered the samosas, paneer tikka, chicken sheekh kebab and the aloo tikki for starters..all cooked to perfection.. The mains were lamb vindaloo, chicken makhani, aloo saag muttar which again were all sublime, not overly spicy but full of flavour. The Garlic naan were cooked so that they were soft and fluffy. The total cost was 8000BHt but worth every baht.....
We have eaten in many a Indian restaurant on our travels but can honestly say that this was by far the best experience we have had...even the kids enjoyed.
the food
Highly Recommended... Give it a go

Dear SonnyFamily123,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your recent experience at Anantara Chiang Mai during which you celebrated your wife's birthday! We are delighted to know you had such a memorable occasion.

The Restaurant on the banks of the Ping River is definitely a favourite for our guests and local community alike. While we have an extensive menu featuring both Thai specilaity dishes and more Western options, our Indian cuisine is certianly a stand out option.

Our talented Indian chefs create magic in the kitchen, complete with tandoor oven!

We do hope that we have the chance to welcome you back in the future.

In the meantime, thank you again for sharing your comments here.

The Anantara has recently changed its name from The Chedi but other than the badge nothing else seems to have changed. The service is excellent and the hotel is the best in Chiang Mai although the Four Seasons which is a way out of town is perhaps a better hotel.

It is a very good city centre hotel yards from the Night Market and very near some excellent restaurants. The reason for the down grade from 5 stars however are that there are some annoyances:-

1. Having been charged £120 each for a very nice New Year's Eve Gala Dinner, I thought being charged an additions £5 for a bottle of water was mean and demonstrates a penny pinching attitude.

2. The Club Lounge is not worth paying for in my opinion. The breakfast is ok but since everything has to come from the main kitchen it all takes ages to arrive. Unlike most Club lounges there are no drinks to help yourself and when we asked for a bottle of water in the day we got a glass of water as we were told this is what they have.

3. The rooms are dark. Why do hotels insist on having inadequate lighting.

4. Breakfast should surely start earlier than 7am when many of the trips that guests are taking start very early in the day.

As others have said, the rooms can be noisy being close to the road but then this is a trade off for being in the city centre and I found this acceptable. yes the frogs were noisy but being in this part of the world you expect noisy wildlife.

There are many positives such as the service, a great pool area, great afternoon tea but they need to make improvements to get this up to truly top class standards.

Dear mbgandco,

Thank you for sharing your comments about your recent experience here in Chiang Mai.

I am delighted to know that despite some reservations, you still consider us the leading hotel in the center of Chiang Mai.

Having said that, you raise some good points for us to consider. Rest assured that we do not consider ourselves perfect and will always look at ways how to improve. We will certianly discuss all the issues you raise and see if we can indeed raise the bar even higher than in the past.

We do thank you for the time taken to share such thoughts and we do hope that you may return to Chiang Mai and to Anantara in the future. We will certianly do our best to impress on the next occasion and ensure we get those five stars from you.

Until then, warm wishes from us all,
