Worst experience I've ever had in 30 years

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 6 Feb 2013
I'd heard lots of great reviews about Libra so I have to say I am totally stunned at the experience we had - and I still feel this way and it was over 2 weeks ago! I would just like to say first off I'm commenting solely on my experience with the night staff NOT the day staff. Upon arriving at 10 pm i was greeted by a seemingly friendly lady who gave me my key which my friend had left for me and asked her teenage son to show me to room. He looked annoyed at having to move from the tv, kissed his teeth a few times but i just put this down to teenage boy itis. Unfortunately as i found out later he showed me to the wrong room. After dinner we went back to retrieve my stuff and put it in my friends room, but only the teenage boy was there and he continued to ignore us ask for the key. I honestly couldnt believe what happened next. When he finally got off his chair because we stood in front of the tv he knocked on the door of the night staff and a woman opened the door and pretty much flew at us saying we could check out tomorrow as we were too much trouble. When we tried to explain this wasnt our mistake she agreed with us and said 'still'. After a lengthy discussion with the boy while she made us stand there for 10 minutes and continually ignored us he reluctantly shoved his chair back slammed something into the wall and tutted and sighed as he led us upstairs. But while he did, she stood there watching us walk off with arms folded shouting 'i know what you're saying about me, go on check out. Check out time is 10am but you can check out now if you want'. The best bit was we weren't! We were both trying our best not to retaliate to keep our mouths shut and save it for this review. It was bizarre, just bizarre! I have never encountered someone so rude in all my life who really wanted to start an argument let alone in a hotel where travellers stay! Still shocked.

The star of this place is the service. The owner of libra guesthouse and her staff are so kind and friendly and accommodating. Whatever you need they are willing and able to organise for you! We were only able to stay there one night but the rooms are lovely and clean, and the beds re comfortable. It is basic but it's everything you could need! The breakfast is delicious and cheap. We also do a three day trek in the chiang mai mountains with the them which I highly reccomend! The one we did was about $70 but it's overnight and you get to trek, bamboo raft, feed and ride elephants, go to a waterfall and go to a hot spring! It also involves staying at a local hill village, where the local cook you dinner and breakfast and you get a little taste of village life!! The guesthouse were also really good with this too, insisting that we come down to the guesthouse (we were originally staying at another hotel) and have everything explained to us and see photos and reviews etc. before we booked anything, even though we were willing to book right then and there.

This place is such good value!!!! So cheap and so lovely!!! It has a really homey, accommodating feel to it!! Stay here!

This guest house is inexpensive and the location is perfect. The en-suite room we had was basic, with beds and a fan. For 200 baht per person it was perfect. The family who run this guest house are extremely helpful and really friendly. It's the best place we've stayed in Thailand so far. All the other guests were friendly. We would definitely recommend it, especially for young travellers on a budget.

Libra guesthouse is perfectly located in Chiang Mai and has a range of rooms for every budget. But what really made our trip to chiang mai was the staff. We had limited time but by talking with the amazing staff who run the guesthouse we were able to arrange everything easily. They even booked our bus while we were away on our trek so that we were sure of a seat. Amazing local knowledge and truly lovely people.

We had a nice week long stay at the Libra Guesthouse, was recommended by a lady we met on the train journey there! The owners are very friendly, the rooms spacious and very cheap for what you get. Good location too. Thanks for a nice stay.

I've stayed at several places in Chiang Mai, Libra has been my favorite. Perfect location in the calmer northeast corner of the old city. The owners are great, super helpful and very funny. Be aware that it's high season plus the flower festival, so most places are booked or only have one night available at a time, it's difficult to find multiple nights by walking around, you'll see lots of people trying... Libra's less expensive 400-800 baht high season rate rooms were full, but they had a large 1000 baht room available for several nights, good value, it's just as nice as one that I had paid quite a bit more for in the noisy center of town. Mostly young backpackers but also some families. Nice garden areas and good food. Room 108, so quiet, the only sounds were the birds outside and the refrigerator. I'll be back in a couple weeks to go on their 3-day trek, looks like fun and good reviews.
