Soso hotel ideally situated near old town and at 20 min walk from night market.
Sort of no nonsense family-backpackers hotel.

Laundry and pharmacist at the opposite side of road. Pubs restaurants, scooter rentals nearby. Foodshops at chang mai gate nearby.

Good wifi at the lobby, not in rooms.

Room was not ready when we arrived, but we were offered to shower and change clothes at the pool. And were offered a free upgrade to superior room. Good reaction from the staff. Friendly and active staff, clean rooms. A bit of hard beds. Good tv set , nice rooms, a bit outdated, but original and authentic in opinion.

Nice public space with cosy and no nonsense tv corner, bar, next to the pool, ideal for following sports events as" tour de france".

The hotel gives the impression of a lively and no nonense backpackers and family hotel.

Cons and advice to the staff:

- you should have serious word with your neighbours: the simple fact of being waken up every morning at 5 AM by the noise of at least 5 competing roosters is not my idea of a good holiday. If I would have known this issue on beforehand, Chiang Mai Gate hotel would have been a nogo for us. Good sleep is very important, and crowing roosters are incompatible with this.

- the breakfast is frankly said lousy and some small steps can make a big improvement. Provide yoghourt and or cheese. Set some cornflakes for the kids aside (the cost is not so big, isn't it?). I agree that you don't want to win a gastronomical prize with your breakfast, but the service now is simply sub-par. When you see guests bringing in their own supplies, then you should do something about it.

The Chiang Mai Gate Hotel is conveniently located south of the old town. Only a few minutes walk to the historic center with many temples, markets and shops. Night market drives a taxi shuttle to the hotel. The rooms are quite spacious and clean and nicely decorated. This family-run hotel has very courteous and helpful staff and tries everything to prepare a nice stay for guests. The small pool area is well kept and quiet. The hotel is located in a relatively quiet side street. only on weekends you can hear the music nearer pubs. I come regularly to the Chiang Mai Gate as a tour guide and travel all guests are very satisfied. There is free wifi in the lounge, which is not always functionality is fine, but things do not just work in Thailand as 100%.

Although the hotel seems reasonable value, clean and well serviced, the food served in the Palm Tree Restaurant was the worst we've encountered in Thailand. Breakfast lacks any healthy options (cereal, juice, yoghurt etc) and the food including for lunch is generally poor quality and based mostly on packet sauces and added MSG. Even if travellers would be advised to eat at the local night market, hopefully the hotel managers will start to provide more edible, fresh food, even if that means charging a little more.

Great location, great rooms, friendly staff. Rate included a modest but perfectly adequate buffet breakfast. Had stayed there once before with friends and this time took family who had not been to Chiang Mai. All very happy with hotel. Provided free transport to the night market.

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms have lovely thai decor but have previously stayed in a standard room and that was fine...

The CM Gate hotel is situated on the south side of the city moat and therefore most of the attractions around Chiang Mai are within easy and inexpensive reach by tuk-tuk. The hotel itself has a somewhat 'tired' feel to it. The rooms, whilst quaintly decorated in a traditional 'Lanna' style, look and feel a bit worn and in need of a refurb. Being a city hotel with thin Thai-style walls, it is a fairly noisy hotel to overnight in and restful sleep may be elusive!

The only meal we took in the hotel was breakfast and it was a very average buffet affair which was pretty unappetising unless you have a penchant for rubbery cold fried eggs!

Summing up... this has at one time been quite a smart hotel but now the place and its staff seem to have become a bit jaded.

This hotel is not far away from the center, but too far to walk, so you need a Tuk Tuk.
The rooms are small, especially the bathroom. They made the superior rooms, we booked, in a Lanna style. I have been in these style of rooms before, and they might look nice, they are not really very comfortable. The bathroom has a twin door, with no door handles, so not easy to open/close. I have no idea how corpulent people can fit in this bathroom. Sitting on the WC, your legs are in the shower area. You need to dry yourself with a towel outside the bathroom, because the place to do that is absolutely not enough. But the style is special.
Breakfast was a buffet style, more Thai than foreign food. And yes, the fried eggs where cold, as was the ham "swimming" in some sort of water. Service however, overall was friendly.

Room Tip: The Luxe rooms look better than the superior ones

On arrival to the hotel, it appears to be quite nice with the prospect of more to come. However this lasts up until you leave the lobby. The second you exit the lift the decor is tired, out of date and the hallways have a smell and sense of that of an old peoples home.

We could perhaps overlook the dark musty hallways if the rooms were better maintained, unfortunately not. Simple things like bulbs needing replacing, no internet in the room, barely any tissue to even blow your nose! Also problems such as the shower drain being blocked with hair so the water would overflow. The shower room was again tired, paint warn away, dark and dingy with towels that smelled like musty biscuits.

The swimming pool looked nice from a distance, but we didn't venture down during our stay as we didn't trust it's cleanliness from what we had seen elsewhere.

Things really didn't improve when we went for breakfast. The tables we're disgusting, the table cloths had stains and holes all over them. The place was crawling with ants, flies and various other bugs. The food was only fit for the insects thats feasted upon it. The two times I did try the food didn't do my stomach any good. Eggs we're never cooked through and the staff as nice as they were, had so little English they couldn't understand when I asked them to cook the eggs for a littler longer.

I know it's ignorant to expect the staff to be able to speak English, however the staff at Chiang Mai gate had the worst out of all the hotels we visited in the city.

The one good thing about Chiang Mai Gate is it's location. It's only a 10 minute walk to the main area. However there are better hotels in better locations for a better price.

I will be uploading photos as well for you to judge for yourself, but I strongly recommend anyone with any standards to look elsewhere.

Our first hotel was Aruntara. A bit far out taking 30 minutes to walk to the main area and more expensive but amazing service and standards.

Room Tip: Choose one in a different hotel.
