“Considering the price... A little disappointed. ”

By the time I got CMG hotel I had been traveling for 5 weeks through South East Asia. I had been staying on a backpacker budget so this hotel was going to be our final (and only) expensive hotel. And honestly, I had stayed in cheaper places which I would consider better.

The free wifi was only in the lobby, and it was some of the worst Internet I had had in Asia (and I had just been in Laos, a much less developed country).

We had to catch a train and had to leave the hotel at 3pm. We asked if we could have the room till that time, which was only an extra three hours after check out, and were told it would cost an extra 500 baht. We said no, and we gave them our bags to look after for the three hours; which they just left near the staircase and didn't lock up anywhere.

The beds were were very comfy, but the room got very stuffy even with the air con on; and we were there in winter. I can only imagine how hot it gets in summer. The TV is mediocre, but we didn't go to Chaing Mai to watch TV so that didn't bother us.

The bathroom was big, and they give you shampoo, shower gel and a shower cap; however the shower curtain had mildew growing on it, and smelt a little funky when you had a shower. I also found the shower the most difficult thing to wrangle; the tap got too hot to touch and the water would shift between hot and cold and the pressure was very very high.

Their tour desk charges very inflated prices, however they do offer a free shuttle to the night market, train station and airport, which is great. But the reception desk are not the friendliest of people.

The pool and surrounds is very nice.
The breakfast was not bad, but considering it was an extra 200-300 baht (I can't remember exactly) I probably would have expected slightly better quality.

The location is close to the food market, and the the Chiang Mai gate, which was good. But other than that there isn't a whole lot of stuff around.

Not a bad place to stay, but for the price you could find an AMAZING little guesthouse in the old town.

Hotel is on a relatively quiet road, less than five minutes' walk from Chiang Mai Gate. Rooms are spacious, clean and modern. Swimming pool, while quite small is clean and well-maintained. Hotel staff are helpful. Wifi access is very patchy, however.

I stayed here as part of an extended tour stay and I could not fault the staff for their welcome, friendliness and professionalism. The hotel is in a great location near the city walls and the shuttle to the night market every evening is a great service. I stayed in both the standard and deluxe room and have to say preferred the standard room for its carpet, size and amazing views from the balcony. The deluxe room was next to a poultry farm so you may want to check this with the hotel staff if you like a slightly quieter morning but ear plugs should suffice!
The food at breakfast was good and regularly refreshed and the location of the hotel meant there were a few places to eat nearby for dinner and the nighttime eating at the Chiang Mai Gate market. I would definitely be (and have already) recommending this place to others and hope to stay again if I am ever back in the city.

Room Tip: see if you can get a south-facing room for great views of temples down the road.

The first room I was assigned stunk of mold, just unbearable… the second one was marginally better. Apparently their AC system is moldy. Since the AC was off in the second room when I entered, the mold smell was very faint, though it was still stuffy. Luckily the weather was cool enough that I didn't need AC during my time.

Another big downside is the lack of wifi anywhere but the lobby. In the lobby the speed ranges from unusable to barely tolerable.

Breakfast isn't very good. Flies on the fruit. Hard to screw up a hard boiled egg though.

At the least the rooms are a nice size. Staff helpful.

Lastly, to pass along a tip another guest said to me: Be careful not to burn yourself on the 'hot' faucet in the shower. It has absolutely no insulation, so if you are not careful you can seriously burn yourself adjusting the water temperature. I used a spare hand towel to adjust.

We stayed for 3 days, our room was clean, nice and the staff very nice and proffesional. They speak good English.
They also provide free transport to night bazar at 8pm every day.

We would recommend the hotel: great location, clean, providing good service!

Good place to be in Chiang Mai, just outside the gate to the old town with a weekend night market and food stalls galore every night just outside. There's also 7-11s and an ATM within 20 feet of the hotel. The hotel itself is a little tired but I stayed in one of the suites and it was very pretty and comfortable. Nice pool, not fabulous but nice. The Wi-Fi tho is a pain in the proverbial, its only in the lobby and very, very slow.
The breakfast wasn't western oriented but they did cook fresh eggs except the restaurant staff weren't very welcoming or helpful and just couldn't see the point of cooking a fresh omelette for you when there was dried up scrambled egg in the big bin. The front desk staff were excellent and very helpful.
I can also recommend the tailor whose shop is within the hotel complex. Mr Jhit is not pushy and will not try to rip you off, and his work is excellent. Well worth the spend and so much lower priced than Bangkok.
I can recommend the trip to Tiger Kingdom and very much recommend the guided town centre tour on Segways. Fabulous fun vehicles easy to use with great guides who were very considerate and helpful.

Room Tip: get a suite

Room was fine--clean and large enough. Included breakfast was OK. There is enough to choose from to fill you up. Location is OK. It's outside the walls and in a slightly quieter area of the city. It's convenient for getting to/from the airport but a bit further from the bus and train station. The internet is slow. My wife felt she got lots of good info from the travel desk in the lobby. There is a pool but we did not use it. It's a busy hotel with lots of tour groups coming and going at all hours.

We thought it was an OK place but we would probably not choose it again. We would choose a smaller family run place.
