“Beautifully designed rooms - beware of bugs”
Reviewed 1 June 2012

The rooms are undoubtedly beautiful at Ayatana. Toiletries were complimentary and replenished every day. Water, tea and coffee were available and also free. The room had modern comforts - air con, cable TV, refrigerator, landline telephone, security deposit box. Wifi was available during my first day and then went down for the remaining 4 nights I was there - bit of a bummer, but just meant going down to reception whenever I needed it. A free shuttle bus service is operated twice a day - morning service takes you to the city (very handy) and evening service heads to the Night Bazaar. Nice decent sized pool, I saw it being cleaned a few times while I was there and seemed clean when I used it.

On the not-so-good side of things, they do have a mosquito problem at the resort which they are upfront about when you get there. You are provided with a mosquito racket, mosquito repellant, mosquito net (around the bed) and a oil burner containing more repellant. However, I still gained around 50 bites during my stay there despite all these precautions and doubling up on my own deet spray. They do inform you not to keep windows and doors open (to prevent mosquitoes flying in), so it was disappointing to see one of the cleaning staff keeping rooms wide open while taking her break in the guest rooms (on more than two occasions). It's a small gripe, but still counter-productive. Another issue, if you have an aversion to/are squeamish at the sight of bugs, then this may not be a comfortable stay for you. There was a roach in my room on arrival and a few other bugs that had found their way in during my stay. Apparently, the problem with bugs/flies/mozzies is down to the water-orientated garden landscape The rainforest shower feature would have been a nice touch, if the one in my room worked properly. Even though Ayatana advertise themselves as a 'Spa Resort', the spa is still in the process of being built so was out of service during my time there.

Overall, the staff were polite and helpful - in particular Dao who was fantastic and even taught me some Thai AND Pinny, who was always helpful. If you don't mind a few bugs and don't have a huge allergic reaction to mosquito bites, then this is a nice, peaceful place to stay.

We stayed five nights here while exploring Chiang Mai. The hotel is about 10 min west of the 'Old City' and near the Chiang Mai university. This is a bonus at night when food vendors set up on the main Suthep Road and have fantastic local and cheap eats. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was a good spread served on the tables at the front of the hotel. We had one dinner at the restaurant which was good without being spectacular. There is a shuttle that runs into the city twice a day (mid morning and evening) and will drop you at the main tourist areas. You can negotiate with the driver if you want to be dropped elsewhere. Alternatively you can walk the 300m to Suthep and jump into a songtaw for 20-30b into the city. Tuk Tuks cost us 100-200b for three people to return to the hotel depending on the driver and time of the day. There are convenience stores (with ATM) and local laundries in the small streets surrounding the hotel. A pool bar operates in the afternoon at the swimming pool which was refreshing after a day of shopping and exploring.
We stayed in a second-floor room which was spacious with a huge bathroom and shower. At the back of the shower was an alcove which was great for drying clothes.
The hotel is set in a 'water' setting so make sure you have mozzie repellant and use the nets over the beds.
Great hotel and would certainly stay there again

Room Tip: Second floor is certainly quieter than being adjacent to the activity around the grounds each mornin...

We stayed at the Ayatana in early Feb 2012 as we wanted a quiet, relaxing place to stay in Chiang Mai whilst also doing the main tours and markets. The Ayatana did not dissapoint, location was great for us (but is not central), staff very pleasant, especially the driver who was great from picking us up to dropping us back at the airport, and the bed is one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in. Wonderful setting for couples. Would say we were dissapointed the fitness centre was out of use during our stay, as this was something we did intend to use during our time, but all in all a very nice place and would reccommend :-)

My husband and I spent 3 weeks in late January 2012 to February 2012 at the Ayatana Hamlet. It is hard to summarize all that is wonderful about this place and the people running it. The Ayatana is beautiful, romantic, artfully appointed. It is sabai sabai, as the Thai would say. Every single staff person is friendly and helpful. I wish I knew everyone's names because they all deserve a mention in this review. April, Dith, Khun Dang, Dao, Pin, Kwan, Rung-aroon....they are all gracious and filled with good humor and went out of their way to see that our stay was delightful. The grounds are tranquil. The breakfast which is included in the stay is superb, a mix of authentic Thai and continental. The location is perfect...near Chiang Mai University and the markets on Suthep Rd. We loved walking in the neighborhood. So safe and interesting. Would go back to the Ayatana in a heartbeat and plan to!

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor overlooking the pool. Lovely.

My wife and I went to Ayatana for our anniversary. We had a wonderful time there. Since it was late January the hotel was almost empty. There were only a handful of other guests. All in all, we found the hotel to be very clean, peaceful, aesthetically comforting, and wonderfully served. Other reviews mention the mosquito problem. Yes, there are mosquitoes here, but you'll find that every hotel in Chiang Mai has mosquito problems. Just read reviews on any other hotel, and you'll see those complaints there as well. The hotel has plenty of water features, but they do an excellent job of running bubbling fountains in the water all through the day. This seems to help control the mosquitoes. They also provided a very convenient (and romantic looking) mosquito net around the bed. All in all, we only got a few bites in our two days here.
The bubbly fountains also kept the hotel very peaceful. When we were in our room, we couldn't hear anything outside. When we ate at the pool-side tables, we couldn't hear any conversation from other tables. It was wonderful!
The breakfast was fantastic! They offered made to order omelets, different types of breads, fruits, fresh fruit juice, freshly brewed coffee, and cereal. We had both of our evening meals at the hotel as well. The western food wasn't amazing, but the Asian dishes were fantastic.
The hotel really isn't that far from the city. They offer two shuttle buses into the night market area each day (10 AM and 7:30 PM). Also, it's only a ten minute walk to one of the main roads in town. So, it's quite easy to get down to a 7-11, other restaurants, laundry service, etc.
Great price, great service, great ambiance!

Room Tip: Second floor rooms seem to have more privacy

Stayed here for 6 nights towards the end of a 7 week trip and was the most comfortable we've been. Was a little apprehensive due to the price we paid but any concerns we had were easily quashed upon arrival. Lovely hotel and the staff are the most helpful I've ever come across. It's a little of of the town but this is what we were after as it provides a nice relaxing atmosphere. The hotel also provides a free shuttle bus to town once in the morning and once in the evening. Rooms and bathrooms are spacious and have everything you need! We were sorry we had to leave!
