My wife and I used to live in Thailand and have enjoyed this guest house a number of times through the years. Our latest stay was last summer. The staff is great, the pool and lounge are comfortable. We loved it here. It has a great location too.

We booked this place ahead on the basis of a recommendation from a local Farang. What a mistake! This was easily the dirtiest, most feral accommodation I have seen in years. The sheets were dirty, the bathroom was disgusting (lots of brown marks on the wall - eeew!). We refused to sleep in that room so they offered us a more expensive room - 700 bath - but in that room the hot water shower would trip the electricity fuse, so when one of us was showering the other had to stand outside at the fuse box putting the power back on. The service was so terrible I can't put it into words. AVOID.

We left our previous guesthouse (Pha Thai House, 400 bht a night and quite nice if you get a room away from the road) to come to Smile House (500 bht), thinking we'd like to stay in a place with a pool on our last day/night in Chiang Mai. What a mistake! It's true, Smile House has a pool, which I can't review because our last day was too chilly to use, and the common area is nice. Unfortunately, our room was full of mosquitoes and our bed was full of ants! We spent our first couple of hours in the room killing bugs, trying to close windows and jury-rigging mosquito screens closed. When we went out for the evening I considered asking them to move us to another room, but by that point we'd already fixed the room and we didn't want to have to go through the process all over again. Don't bother with this place. There are places both cheaper and nicer.

Stayed here the beginning of Jan 11 in the more expensive (B750) rooms with airco on the ground floor behind the pool. The beds are made of stone, the shower did not work, the toilet did not flush and there was a funny smell. There are much better deals to be found in Chiang Mai than this run down place.
